The only niko choke that I can really say is a choke was the grandfinal vs cloud9 on the boston major. He always has high playoffs stats and has always been consistent. Simple had to get his major on his 4th one after choking on the first 3. Niko choked at boston, but at stockholm he was by far g2's best player and was the only reason they were in the finals especially because they had no dedicated awp.
What a fucking great video. I'm quite new to pro CS despite playing the franchise casually for almost 20 years at this point, and the "we don't have a Michael Jordan in CS" quote put into words the feeling I had after researching CS history. You very rarely see the best players truly in the zone in these big moments, thanks for this analysis. You're awesome launders.
Yea you gave the aleksib choke reference at the end when i saw him finally lifting that major trophy it was such a freeing feeling cuz i was rooting for this genius so long. All the hardships he had gone through finally payed off and it shows how strong his character is to not give up.
Its a great year for Finnish sports in general since it looks like Florida Panthers is winning the Stanley Cup and its the team with most Finnish players including Barkov. But the Aleksib major win will always be the most important sports moment for me since there is only 2 Finnish players remaining on the top of CS and Aleksib fought so hard to lift the trophy.

This video made me think a lot about Twistzz’ interview before they played the EPL finals to win their Grand Slam in 2023. When asked if the pressure of the grand slam was weighing on him he said absolutely yes it is, all I want is to win that final today. I always appreciated that winning mentality from Twistzz, it’s part of why he’s one of NA’s most decorated.

I witnessed both, Boston and Copenhagen. And both were so sad to me as a Karrigan fan, especially Copenhagen. Faze wasn't supposed to defeat Spirit but they did, they even defeated Vitality. Only to be defeated by NAVI in the end.
Oh man that pre game talk before the copenhagen major match, it was clear zontix wasn't confident i knew it was over, just like the nafany clip you showed
So many things were against him in that quarter final. He was sick, the Vertigo pick placed them in an uncomfortable situation, and FaZe had destroyed them on Mirage and they had to fight for overtime on Nuke. If you read Hally's interview after that game you'd know that Zontix's calls in overtime helped them secure Nuke. But a lot has changed after Copenhagen because they have realized they're mortal.
VeryGames were chokers before NiP, they were often the best team in the world but could not get past NiP in finals for a long time until they added shox. They were arguably the favourite for the first ever major.
Dignitas were the most choke prone team of all time, you could count on them running up the score and losing in the most amazing ways. Could be 15-1 and dignitas could still choke it. Hiko are you kidding me
I always think of FaZe vs G2 Katowice 2022. Carlos was in the crowd. I will never forget seeing him put his hands around his neck to mock FaZe during those overtime rounds.
Great vid, just a correction the giant comeback was NOT in the grand final of cologne, that was the semifinals at MLG columbus earlier in the year. The cologne final was a beatdown that was never close, hence why many people say that the "real" final was actually on the top half of the bracket.
I don’t know if you watch r6 or know anything about it, but the games equivalent of s1mple (shaiiko) actually had a generational choke at the recent Manchester major which is made even more interesting because imagine if electronic igl broke the kill record and started genuinely getting furious with his team. Karrigan is by far my favourite player, but his choking is soo painful to experience. The more sure the victory seems the more sure I am he'll choke. I knew in copenhagen, they will play amazing but the final will be difficult as soon as I saw the playoff bracket
I agree that choking is a huge problem in the scene, but I would just like to mention that a lot of the time, I think its more down to the fact that some teams/players really step up in finals and not that others go missing. As an example Glaive's astralis, who were obviously on paper almost favorite for every other major, but never the less. They didn't win majors because of their opponents choking, but because they were a different beast in the big matches, simply unstoppable. If you couldnt already tell I'm a huge astralis fan, and god damn I miss my team having the balls, to just go out on the stage and fuck teams up
Launders, just wanted to comment about how much I love these types of videos. Your analysis on all things CS brings a different light to the table than most other videos. 8:30 Real story, I saw drake in Toronto just casually walking the street with a friend of his. I wasn't really a big fan but I was so shocked that no one was going up to him. Then I looked to my left and saw this huge crowd of people chanting "boxr movement club" and launders himself getting photos with all these fans. Absolutely wild time.
I think it's entirely possible that a team that is better on paper could simply just play poorly and/or get outclassed by a "worse" team on paper. Current CS is very similar to professional tennis. Everyone is very good, if you don't show up and play well, you will lose. Doesn't matter if your opponent is ranked 200, you can lose. I just don't always equate a "better" team losing to "choking". It's also important to note that in order for a "choke" to happen, it often requires the opponent to play pretty damn well to apply that level of pressure to the favorite.
On point criticism regarding nafany and Spirit, however I believe it is based on information from these players/teams which is limited by factors such as language barriers and how "open to public" they decided to be. The "no pressure" or "we just play our game" responses sounded more like summary of how they generally try to deal with this situation? Cuz they sounded like they couldve been way more precise if they were asked the same question in their own language. For the concern about Spirit, I personally think Spirit looks like a very different team from Gambit/Cloud9. At least they openly admitted that they did struggle from mental issues (choking) in big games (which was never openly admitted by anyone from Gambit/Cloud9 for like 2 years). Also hally is just incredible. Considering how young donk and zont1x are and with the helping hands from hally and chopper, I think Spirit looks very promising as long as they don't be silly and makes any roster moves. (that -interz move will be my biggest Counter Strike nightmare forever)
It’s interesting because in baseball if we clutch is talked about but statistically elevating your performance when it matters most doesn’t transfer year to year. CS:GO seems kinda different tho, the don’t know why but it appear to be idk the difference but anyone have any thoughts?
@@launders yeah so in baseball there’s a metric about how big any given situation is. Bottom of the 9th 2 out’s bases loaded is viewed as more “high leverage” then the opening at bat of a game. When you take a players stats as a whole (indiscriminate of the situation) over the course of a season and then compare the stats (high leverage and all leverage at bats) some players obviously end up having better stats in the high leverage situations and some worse. However, when looking at the data season to season no body consistently is better or worse in the clutch. For example, the infamous Jess Winker in 2023 and he had a terrible season, didn’t even hit 200 and had negative WAR. But he had the highest batting average in high leverage situations in all the mlb and statistically was the best batter in when it mattered most. His game clearly was elevated when it mattered most. But did he do that the year b4 no. Is he doing that this year no. It appears to not be repeatable or batting clutch seems to be an unreliable metric. More over when we talk about choking we are talking about how a player is playing worse then they normally do so it deviates from there “base-line.” The Rockies once signed 3 hitters who were top ten in elevating their hitting ability in the clutch. The next season there ability in the clutch when looking at stats was below average. And there game worsened in the clutch. Over the whole season all three player’s stats remained relatively unchanged. Essentially when it comes to baseball hitting in clutch situations appears to not be a repeatable or reliable attribute of any given player when the situation is assed based on the players “baseline” performance.
