      Soft diplomacy with China can bring lots of sadness and tears for panda lovers as other foreign countries did when returning especially the babies born out of China. Wish there is international panda audit agency that inspects what goes on at China panda breeding centers to stop the abuse and neglect, in addition to unnecessary research that tortures and kills!!!

      @@Lee-we6nr I don’t know where that accusation comes from. Do you have any evidence? Videos, pictures, testimonies, statistics … or have you been to China and seen it with your own eyes? They said it was a 45 minute tour but from our time it was 24 minutes. The plants are beautiful and have many amazing ones to look at. All the other types of animals as well. You need to worry about pandas in China more than in overseas. 1) Some of the zoo keepers in China are abusing pandas hitting them on camera. 2) Many pandas in China are getting sick to have unsafe private encounters and getting life long sickness like allergies with hair loss, because zoos are making more money to sell the private encounters. 3) Some of the pandas in China are not immediately treated when they are sick. I can even name the mistreated pandas of these cases.

      @@Lee-we6nr They are not likely to extinct any more thanks to facades of conservation efforts. They, however, have trouble in surviving in the wild. These bears are easy targets of some wild animals, for instance, wolf pack. China researchers have used neck monitors (it will come off in 2 years) on those which have been rescued. If any one of them stay at a location motionless for 24 hours, they would go check. They found one bear staying on a tree for quite long. When they reached the site, they noticed a bear on a tree trunk escaping wild beasts. They fed the bear honeyed apples and 16 people carried it down the mountain to get to a research center for better treatment. After about five month recovery, the bear was released back to the wild. Three years later, the same bear came to humans again, thinner and poorly nutritional. Scientists put on a new necklace monitor and released it to the wild, despite social media call for the center to look after for for “retirement”. She was 17 and their lifespan is around 18. Scientists ensured the public the bear would be closely watched. I do not know where you get the information they are abused, but all I can say is their life is cherished and they are well protected.

      There are a lot of efforts in retraining some of them to return them back to the nature. But you have to study them well to help them. The big part of the getting to know them can only be done in the zoo. So it depends on the specific zoo and the effort. I would not disqualify all efforts done by the reputable zoos in the preservation of our planet. You have to look at each case specifically.

  • @noellewest4347
    @noellewest4347 4 месяца назад +2

    No. Just no. Wild animals are not exhibitions, and they do not belong in captivity, full stop. If this is common humanity, then humanity needs to evolve. Zoos are part of the problem, not the solution to conservation. As for education, sanctuaries make educating the public a priority, not buying, breeding, selling and exhibiting the animals.
    Evolve, people. This is not acceptable.

      Accredited zoos are involved in worldwide conservation programs such as the SSP (Species Survival Plan) and their goal is to educate the public the importance of conservation. In an utopian world, we wouldn’t need zoos, sanctuaries and shelters for animals but in order to save a species it’s important that zoos, sanctuaries and shelters make it their priority to preserve and protect. Strict regulations are in place to regulate breeding programs at zoos through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and it does not take animals out of the wild, buy and sell. You’re thinking of non-accredited zoos and private ownership by people who can buy, for instance, a tiger cub online. There are canned hunting ranches where a person can literally go and shoot a wild animal (mostly lions, rhinos and other large mammals), most of which are bought for the purpose of hunting them. Zoos and sanctuaries may not be the perfect place for animals but it is humans who have contributed to the need for zoos and sanctuaries because of the demand for medicinal remedies, illegal wildlife trafficking, body parts such as ivory, and the list goes on. I’m not a zoo person by nature but I think of a zoo animal as an ambassador of their own species meant to educate.

      "You’re thinking of non-accredited zoos and private ownership by people who can buy, for instance, a tiger cub online."
      I assure you I am not. I am referring to zoos exactly like those in SD and DC (I'm from both cities and have been to both zoos multiple times). Breeding wild animals in captivity is an archaic practice that needs to stop. And one day, it will stop.
      But for now, well-intentioned people need to wake up. Despite some being more regulated than others, all zoos perpetuate a misguided notion that to save wild animals and educate the public about them, we have the right to force them into a life of captivity through breeding and exhibitionism. This is not the way an evolved society treats the natural environment and those that occupy it with us. This is not what Genesis 1 means when it states that we have "dominion" over animals.

I do volunteer work at my local zoo not because I’m a zoo person but because I believe in and teach children and adults about conservation and the importance of their survival. It’s the only life these animals know and while they are in a safe environment away from human predators, yes I prefer the animals to be in their natural habitat but in today’s world extinction would be rampant. It is the fly by night zoos that anger me where animals are mistreated and abused. In fact, it angers me when all animals everywhere are mistreated and abused.
