Thank you for posting this, I have admired her artistic and political gifts and skills for years! I believe she passed away within a year of this interview.

THANK YOU for posting this! I just saw Melvyn Douglas' film "The Old Dark House." Then I read his mini-bio on IMDb. The mention of Helen Gahagan there led me further on, and to this wonderful interview. What a terrific woman. We should all know more about her. I see that there was a reading of a play about her called "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Helen Gahagan Douglas," starring Wendy Malick. That was back in 2008. I'm curious and will read more about HGD. Again, thanks for posting!

Same thing happened to me; last night I saw That Uncertain Feeling, and looking for his biography I found too the mentio of Helen Gahagan for the first time in my life, and I am surprisely glad (sorry for my english)

What a find! Thanks so much - its disappointing how Helen is still denied a place alongside so many other trailblazers (like Alice Paul or Jeanette Rankin for example) - love this

When Melvin Douglas was asked what he thought about women's liberation, he said "I think I've been married to it for 50 years."

Great answer-tells you all you need to know about him other than his outstanding talents.
They stayed married 50 yrs until they died.

Facinating lady. I was first exposed to Gahagen as a film star in 'SHE'. I found myself curious that I had never seen her in anything else, nor even had heard of her. Researched, and here I am watching this interview. She was an important figure, and it's too bad she isn't better known, or remembered, except as a stepping stone for a disgraced politician, Richard Nixon. But, after the kind of game he played from the beginning, he finally got what he deserved. Something, I think we're going to see again very shortly.

Her costume, headdress and overall appearance' in the film _'She' 1935_ in part inspired the Disney animators when they were creating 'the look' of _'The Evil Queen'_ in _'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs',1937…..._

My dad worked on her campaign when she ran against Nixon. Loved her, hated him. The minute he saw what was going with Muskie's campaign and all of the stuff that happened during that primary, he said he saw Nixon's fingerprints all over it. Watergate didn't start then. It really started with Voorhees and Gahagan Douglas. It's who Nixon was.

No mention of LBJ , her lover,in the interview. Chapin gave her nothing but soft pitches to hit. Melvyn Douglas must have had a hard time wearing hats.

Something i found interestong is that Nixon said in one of his interviews that JFK did not get along with Helen and that the Kennedys gave him a thousand dollars in cash when Nixon was campaigning against her.

DOES ANYONE KNOW?---if other interviews (on film/video or magazine and/or book form) had been conducted with her in which she talks at more length about SHE? I can't imagine this is all she had ever said about that very classic film.

She definitely did not want to talk about Richard Nixon . Say what you want about Nixon but few people outside of John F Kennedy and Pat Brown beat him politically .

She did not care about marriage vows. She and LBJ had a big documented love affair in the 1950s.

Just imagine America if a) Wallace was VP when FDR died in 1945, b) Gahagan beat Nixon in 1950 c) Gahagan supporter Reagan had stayed a New Deal Democrat ✌

Brendon O'Connell's youtube channel can help with all those historical clangers. LBJ played a part in JFK's assassination so her judgment in most places is badly warped.
