This whole series and the consoles it runs on, which I will hold on to probably until i die, embodies everything I love about video games and art in general. There are few other works that show as much will to create something so... complete, from its music, artwork, characters and environment. Needless to say, this masterpiece of a series is my favorite of all time.
As for new PD content, maybe AI will save us in the near future, who knows!

Orta was a masterpiece itself. I used to play that game again and again. Couldn't get enough of the atmosphere and world that was only hinted at in the background. Always struggle to describe the setting (is it post-apocalypse? maybe post-post-apocalypse?), or compare it to other works, as it had such a unique feel. I knew about Dune and Nausicaa, but never heard of The Long Afternoon of Earth, so I'm glad to know another source of influence on the series.
I've still never played Zwei or Saga, and could only access the port of 1 through Orta, but even that was enough to hook me to this day. I always joke when discussing this series that only a few people on the planet are probably aware of its existence, though sadly, there's a bit of truth to the hyperbole. But I'll also shout its praises to anyone who will listen.
Still, WOOOO REMAKES! We have to spread the word and this video through the online ethersphere before they release, so they get decent sales and we can maybe even get a Saga remake.

    little known info:
Some character names, items and locations are actually names of real life sega of america employees.
Others are names chosen by those employees, such as girlfriends or other pets.
This is due to shifting priorities near the end of PDS's development cycle.
Most of these names are derived from the testing department's choices since the majority of the budget was spent, it fell upon those employees to choose not only names but even write some of the unfinished dialogue.
It truly was an "all hands on deck" experience for those involved during those final few months; it became a passion project to see it through to the end, you might even say the spirit of Sega of Japan was rubbing off on SoA to "get it done, we must complete what was started".

    • @ludodrome6110
      @ludodrome6110  6 лет назад +9

See, now I just want to go back and add this to the video. Thanks for ruining everything. :P I was aware of some of this -- the tester's names being used as item names -- but not other parts. Really interesting! And yes, there is the definite, unquantifiable feeling that PDS is a labor of love that shows through almost every aspect.

Incredibly good video. Brought back a lot of good memories. I was a total Sega fanboy when I was in high school in the late 90s. I was even one of the lucky few who had bought an original copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Sadly I ended up selling it years ago due to financial problems, but I made an easy $500. I still play this series regularly on the Beetle Saturn core in RetroArch and they play beautifully.
I'm beyond excited for the recently announced remake. Here's hoping that sells a lot of copies to show Sega there's still a lot of love out there for this series.

I also had a friend with an Xbox and Orta. I beat them all back then and to this day, I still consider them some of the most special and unique games ever made. So many of the idiotic masses adore generic AAA blockbusters and will never know about these. It's their loss. It's the same thing with all art forms or experiences in life. I bought this game on the month it was released as I was a fan of the first and second games. I loved this game so much that I kept it in it's original packaging. What I would typically have done to my other Saturn games is dump the cases as they were too big, clunky and broke easy. I would put my Saturn disks in sleeves in a CD album. Now, I'm totally glad I kept this classic in it's original pristine condition. I did so because it was so special to me and that I had never played anything like it before. Today, I'm trying to restore my Sega Saturn disc collection in their original form and buying reproduction cases for every title. I'm also playing all my games to relive the Saturn in all it's glory. I also had a playstation at the time and in retrospect, my Saturn played so much better with X-men COTA, Marvel Super Heroes and Street Fighter Alpha 2. There is no comparison! This is what drove me to restore my old Saturn collection. Panzer Dragoon Saga is soo dear to my heart. It's nice to see the Panzer Dragoon Saga community grow and see videos like this to inform the gamer world. This gem needs a revival. I own the remake of Final Fantasy VII and it's a great game. It though does not compare to Panzer Dragoon Saga as this is the ultimate masterpiece. Thank you for making this video.

These games were a huge part of my childhood and I remember them fondly. It's nice to know others around the world were so profoundly connected to them also. The art, visuals and music are so unique and have stayed with fans for decades now. I guess that even though they've been lost to the annals of video game history, they'll live on in the hearts of the fans who were lucky enough to experience them. And who knows, maybe these upcoming remakes will be a glimmer of that miracle we need?

I can't believe it's been 2 years since this video and I'm playing Panzer Dragoon Saga on Yaba Sanshiro on my Samsung Galaxy S10e with an 8bitdo bluetooth controller. I also downloaded a copy from the redump archive and burned it to disc, and play it on my mod chipped Sega Saturn. If you've got a good enough computer or phone, I recommend emulation. Yaba Sanshiro uses the power of your GPU to enhance the graphics, so some Saturn games, like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers, almost look like Dreamcast games. Even Castlevania SOTN is great on Yaba Sanshiro. I don't notice any slowdown like I do on my real Saturn, and the GPU smooths the crappy stretched textures so they look like they were made for the Saturn's resolution. Maybe in a couple years, we'll get a Saturn Mini that can play and enhance these games as well as my phone.

It's mad that they didn't sell more copies of Saga in Japan I mean they sold approximately 6 million consoles there.
I've been holding off getting a Saturn till the Satiator comes out but that seems to be slow so I might just opt for emulation.

Yes very disapointing indeed. Japanese often have terrible taste.

It’s worth noting the Saturn was pretty damn successful in Japan. It doesn’t hold a candle to the ps1’s numbers, but still. It did outsell the N64 there. That’s probably why 75% of the library is all Japanese exclusives. Panzer Dragoon series really set things apart. Such an incredible series

I've searched for this video because I've just played Azel Panzer Dragoon Rpg on my Japanese Saturn helping myself with the english longplay. It's not impossible to do due to the fact that the game is not long and the characters are few. My basic knowledge of Japanese helped me a bit, I've tried with emulation first but I could't not go over the "1st cd", then I decided to be brave and do it in Japanese.
I'm agree with you: it's a unique game different from all the others

I remember buying the last edition of Saturn Power which had the first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga on the cover. Words cannot express the experience. Sadly the graphics haven't aged well, but if you can look past that (pun intended) it really is a gem and frankly shits all over final fantasy

This makes me both happy and sad. Happy that these games were made, and this world shown, but sad that it was on the obscure side of things. Hell even now as the first game is being remade, I doubt allot of people even know it's coming out.

I would not say there is no hope. SEGA licenced the Panzer Dragoon Saga 20th Anniversary album. They could have said no...
They also released digitally the OSTs of the 4 original games. Which is the first time EVER, these OSTs have been made available officially in the WEST. Why would they do that now if they have 0 interest in the IP? I think it is a test. With little risk for them.

Panzer Dragoon Worldパンツァードラグーンワールド I think the next installment in the Panzer Dragoon IP will be on 10th Generation systems. Right now, we are on 8th Generation systems. The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are powerful, but we all know their graphical capabilities. I think that just as the original Panzer Dragoon was graphically revolutionary, their next installment will be as well. That’s why I think they’re gonna wait till they can have it be a 10th Generation launch title. It’ll be one of the first games to showcase truly mind-blowing graphical fidelity. Current 8th gen systems and 9th gen systems wont be powerful enough to provide the earth-shattering experience that the next Panzer Dragoon should have.

Saturn was not difficult to develop for. This was said one time by one person in an interview and is taken out of context. They were referring to the lack of money. Resident evil and tomb raider were developed for the Saturn and later ported to the psx

It's a shame that Sega continues to fail to capitalize on such a great series, a broad remake of the 3 original Saturn games would surely be a hit on something like PSN or XBL, they are genuinely brilliant shooters and Saga is a phenomenally unique RPG....
