The first movie came out when I was a Resident Director in college - we had some foreign exchange students staying in the dorm that summer and the tornado sirens went off one night (southern IL college). We were moving people into the basement of the dorm, but they didn't even leave their rooms, they thought it was just another midwest thunderstorm - I had to force them down there. That week we went to see Twister (it was in the theaters at the time) and they were horrified. They never ignored another tornado siren after that...

Loved it! I'm 51 and took my 3 teenage boys. Saw it in 4DX, and we laughed and enjoyed it. Reminded me of a 90s movie. There was no agenda. It was simply nice to sit in a movie and have fun and nothing else.

I thought seeing this would be a refreshing and fun after the director said there were no political messages in the movie. He lied. The DEI was in your FACE for the entire first act. You could see that it was clearly drawn out on a spread sheet that there would be exactly one character per special identity group. One white man, one white girl, one black man, one black girl, one transgender, two Latino men, etc. If you've ever watched real-world tornado videos on YT, you'll notice there are NO women. Why are they determined to make action movies for women? The main character in the movie was tedious, she has a bad attitude and treats men like they're idiots. In the middle of the movie, there appears to be a romance developing but they deflate it completely. At the end, Glen Powell chases the girl into the airport like in every romance film you've ever seen. He finds her and the tone is very platonic and awkward. The moment to kiss her passes and he instead picks up her luggage and they walk away side by side. The movie has so many obnoxious modern tropes and problems in it. I was rolling my eyes throughout the run-time.

I watched Twisters yesterday. I loved it. I’m probably biased because it took place all around the area where I live. It looked great, the weather was very believable, and the characters were good. This may sound funny, but my wife and I were very impressed with the wind in the movie. The way the trees blew in the wind, the wheat, the debris, etc.. It all looked scarily realistic to the real thing. They did their homework. The science part did seem a little dumb.

The rich guy buying land was setting up an interesting "twist" but they "blew it." I expected him to buy up the technology then not use it, a la "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Then some heist or challenge in using their technology anyway. But they just stopped that storyline. They also just stopped the storyline of RUclipsrs YouTubing. Twice they extinguished a tornado for the first time in human history and the truck with augers and rocket launchers doesn't have a dash cam?
It was fun, but definitely see it in a theater. The effects and action deserves a big screen.

There was a story, published in Analog Science Fiction magazine in 1975, about a little girl whose childhood was disrupted by a tornado… she grows up to be a legislator (maybe a U. S. Senator?) and pushes for the creation of an anti-tornado technology delivered via Air Force jets. I thought the technology implausible (I was 13 or so when I read it), but the plot absolutely perfect for a big dumb movie. Hot fiftyish actress as the Senator, hotshot pilots, humans taming nature; fun!

I didn’t think she was a girl Boss because she was a combination of both Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in one character. She overcame having PTSD in her arc which is why she needed to own that last disaster scene. Bill Paxton had the same weather super power she had.

    • @blueblur2273
      @blueblur2273 Месяц назад +1

She is definitely a girl boss. The male characters are constantly used to prop her up. They're constantly looking to her for expertise, and they constantly have her saving everyone and talking about how great she is. It's so over the top that it comes off like she has a super power. The 96 film didn't come off like Bill has super powers because they didn't act like they couldn't do anything without him. He clearly had the best instincts, but the rest of the crew was clearly capable without him.

  • @tallerwarrior1256
    @tallerwarrior1256 2 месяца назад +2

I think the only time where Kate is referred to as being awesome and being a genius is at the beginning when she’s just brought back from her retirement. She fails twice after that and struggles to actually reach her real goal until the end of the movie. She’s not physically as strong as Glenn Powell but she’s definitely smart and capable enough to handle herself in a tornado disaster as she should be considering that she’s been studying and chasing tornadoes her entire life. I don’t consider Kate a girl boss at all, she’s just someone who overcomes her trauma and regains her capabilities to handle herself in situations in which she’s trained herself to overcome for years.
I think the film in my opinion really fails at better presenting the supporting cast as most of the film is focused on Glenn Powell and Daisy Jones. I’m not saying that the film shouldn’t have given the main characters the focus that they had but it really sucks that there wasn’t much interaction between them and the supporting characters. I mean is it just me or did the film not set up a confrontation between Kate and David Cornswet’s character?!

I'm going to play the objection card on the audience sick of romance Chris. We're not sick of romance in general, it's when the romance main plot is in a genre where it's normally a side plot. Like star wars. Even in the original twister the romance was a subplot and stayed a subplot and was still natural and touching.

A better question is "does it suck" and I am glad to say, no ... it doesn't suck. Effectively it is a present day remake of the old classic -- and -- it's not in your face woke -- though it does make the girl the hero (aligned with today's girl boss trope). Perfectly described as a popcorn flick and I really enjoyed it. Glen Powell has great charisma and screen presence, there was no “beat you over the head” virtue signaling politics in it, everyone seemed to be heterosexual, I am glad to see it rockin’ at the box office. Maybe Hollyweird will get the message. Even the "girl boss" is not repugnant, she actually has a character arc, and substantial motivations ... my only real complaint is they did not cap off the clear romantic interest at the end.

Nice lively discussion. I fall a little closer to Alan's opinion here. But as a fan of the original (and having watched it Wednesday night in prep for the Thursday showing), this movie doesn't have the same charm and love that Twister has. It's fun, and Glen Powell is fantastic, but it's no more than a summer popcorn flick for turning off the brain and having some fun.
And yeah, Kate's a girl boss. It was distracting a few times, especially with the end sequence.

I could not disagree more with FilmThreat. Kates abilities don’t come out of know where, she has skills and knowledge that she spent a lifetime earning. The Tyler character wasn’t ever wrong because he was a man, sometimes he was wrong, sometimes she was wrong. The characters had story arcs, the British Reporter had more of a character arc than most main characters in movies for the past 10 years. It tips a hat to the old movie, it tips the hat to the storm chaser crowd without being consumed by trying to pander to them. This was an excellent summer popcorn movie. Anyone who likes a good fun movie should go see Twisters.

I was disappointed to see other critics I watch (like Critical Drinker) let this movie off the hook and claim it’s NOT woke. Yes it is, and great to see Chris call it out for it. Not only is the main character the typical “girl who is the key to everything” (the bestest ever!!!!), she is constantly putting all the men in their place, including her so called love interest. The film also has another woke trope: the minority side character that the movie wants you think is bad, but in the end they are predictably good and only white characters remain bad. Jurassic World Dominion had several such characters, like Javi in this one.

I saw the movie over the weekend with my 11 y.o. son. We both liked the '96 original better. For me, this movie probably had more action, but the 90s version had a better story. Yeah, the girl bossing thing is very noticeable, once you see it you can't unsee it. Even more annoying for me was in parts of the movie the main characters abandon their mission to go warn/help the townspeople that are in the path of the tornado. Why? Their research can help the people of that region way more than showing up and commiserating with them after their homes are destroyed. These characters almost act as if the local people have no idea what to do in a tornado situation and that they need to educate them.

Powell’s character has his truck that hes weighted down and has the drills retrofitted onto so he can “drive into the tornado”…….NEVER ONCE over the course of this movie is a single window or windshield in this truck broken or shattered by the either massive killer debris thats flying around or the wind speeds in excess of 200mph. It never happens nor is it ever addressed as to how, in Isaac Newton’s butthole, its even REMOTELY possible.

My only problems are it lacks the charm of Bill Paxton, The mother was not Helen Hunt, and the first movie was a slightly fictionized version of the birth of doppler technology which has saved thousands of lives. This movie was a science fiction based on a weak theoretical possibility. We currently use Doppler we do not currently use descant to suffocate a tornado.

When I saw the trailer I expected to be where Chris was with a 3 as I kept telling my brother it was the least believable trailer they showed including Alien: Romulus, and Longlegs. I decided to go in treating it like a monster movie. Coming out of the movie I appreciated the characters. They all felt distinct and unique and fairly believable. I agree she was girl-bossing, but I liked that she had the lingering trauma from losing her friends. I give it a 6 - above average entertainment.

I think the most depressing thing about this movie for me, is I've reached that age that all the major characters in this movie are technically younger than me. Even the male lead. He was born in October, I was born February of that year. LOL. Aging sucks. The lead female is 10 years younger than me. HOLY COW... Again, Aging is terrible. Like when you get a doctor and they're like; "So, I'm 30." Cool, I'm like out of here.

At least they had the female character show emotion and vulnerability but you can bet if I was her I'd have wanted to rip the guy's clothes off by the end. I saw it in 4dx which I think heightened it so much.

I thought Kate’s performance was bleh Glen was good Javys performance was good despite what I felt was bad character development from the writing. But definitely a movie you won’t be disappointed watching if you shut your brain off and just want 2 hours of entertainment. 👍

Just watched a few good series with actually GOOD and compelling writing and acting.
Supacell is actually pretty damn good.
Also surprisingly Season 2 of Hit Monkey on Hulu. But now that Disney has made Hulu its own, i would not hold out ANY hope that the writing will remain at this level again.
Finally For Those About to Die...well it has some really good points and some definitely obvious New Woke Hollywood elements that seem shoehorned in. But it is a Roland Emmerich gig ..not disaster oriented. But rather a more straightforward telling of the Roman Emperor TITUS's rise and rather quick subsequent fall. Who had a play written about the tragedy of his reign by Shakespeare. But this is DOES show Titus as history depicts him pretty accurate. He was a truly decent and good well intended and honorable man, a soldier and General who was raised by that code of Honor but surrounded by a den of Serpents all wanting to take him down. And unlike someone like Marcus Aralias, possibly his closest comparison, he was woefully unprepared for any of it and it lead to his rapid demise.
It has some other fiction elements written in to fattening it up. Some parts are fit well .. but other more woke elements due make it less appealing. But i watched it all and compared to a lot of what has come out of Hollywood over the years....this is definitely going in the right direction finally but you get the feeling that there must have been a lot of back n forth between Emmerich and the studio (peakcock/NBC) resisting a lot of the Woke notes. But the performances were pretty solid across the board. A few parts weaken it and still a couple really cringe moments. A bit heavy overboard on gratuitous sex...but unlike HBO 's Rome, this tended to seem 60/40 gay to hetro. Which some will try and claim that it is totally accurate for that era of Rome but is in fact not. It is no secret that in Rome it wasn't uncommon for bi-sexuality, especially in pagan ceremonies/ritual celebrations and much like the Greek before them, it wasn't unusual for men to have a male Lover usually formed out of a mentor to mentee relationship or in other fraternal organizations, homosexuality to the degree that is depicted here was not the norm. So it felt not merely gratuitous but forced in by people with agenda. Yet on the other hand they didn't bash herosexuality or make the straight men appear stupid.
Sure there were times that I was yelling at the screen "TITUS...WTF ARE YOU DOING MAN? HOW ARE YOU BEING SO BLIND?" ..lol .. sadly if you know a lot about his story, he was a man way too trusting of those closest to him which kinda fits. As i said he was a soldier used to people who shared his way of thinking and code of honor and was made Ceasar at an awful period in an era of really bad people. It went from Nero to the year of the 4 emperors to his father who got things reasonably settled but by his last days, his other son Titus's revolting brother had pretty much set the stage for a total shitshow to fall in his older brothers lap. The poor man never stood a chance. And it is too bad because they accurately showed that he was a humanitarian first who had witnessed suffering all over the known world and actually cared for more than just Rome the city and power..but he cared about people. But his reign was so short he was virtually swept under the rug as far as Great Leaders of history are concerned. While his brother who was a spoiled politician and coward, ended up one of Rome's most scummy and slimy of politicians and eventual leaders.
Definitely worth watching.. just be advised of some cringe.
Finally I recommend (and keep on recommending) OUTSIDE RANGE starring Josh Brolin!!!
    DUDE!!! WATCH THIS SHOW!!

There wasn’t any girl boss moment that I saw on this movie, maybe is because when I hear girl boss I imagine a Mary sue type of character like Rey in SW. Does she have kind of 6th sense of atmosphere sure, Bill Paxton did too in the OG one. She is well prepared and studied, is shown in the barn scene. This movie is very enjoyable and does not pound your head with any agenda messages. Is just a movie, like Chris said that the theater that he went people clap, I saw the same reaction in my theater as well. Go see the movie and judge for your selves, that’s my opinion.

But this movie wasn't for me and I am okay with that.

@@donkeysaurusrex7881 She is well written (not a Mary Sue) but the script treats her as a girl boss. Bear with me, it takes a pattern to prove the point.
The man and his highly trained team can't do it without her.
The tornado youtube expert Tyler instantly trusts her and follows her on the first meeting.
Two men pine over her while she treats them both rather coldly. Tyler birings her a pizza and patiently stands outside her door like a loyal dog after she shuts the door in his face hoping she will reconsider.
During emergencies she has every life saving and humanitarian idea and the rest of the cast parrot her and follow (e.g., motel tornado)
She helps herself to the StormCorp truck and leaves Javi with no ride.
Good dog Tyler sniffs her out and comes to her house.
Her mom harps on her to hurry up and "Save the world." Not help people, the world.
Javi changes his mind about the rich guy because she said so. She never proved her point that buying their land after they lost everything is immoral. His point was actually better and she offered no rebuttal but he changed his view.
The reporter was instantly intriqued by Kate despite her demonstrating nothing to him early on.
Later he was enamored and secretly photographing her while Tyler said, "She is the real story." Out loud he literally said she center of the entire film.
Built a tornado in middle school (not even high school).
She recognized the tornado at the radio while stormchaser was oblivious and before tornado alerts.
She pulled herself out of the truck, didn't need no man (as the Twilight inspired Team Tyler and Team Javi both ran to her side by side). A third guy said, "I love you."
Javi (the businessman of the group) has all the details of the pitch but still insists she is best to do it.
Good dog Tyler commits probably a felony destroying an airport to park his truck and run to her at the airport because she says good dogs follow their master.
I do not hate the characters, but every qualified person became a dunce.
