Beyond Istvan's smooth technique and impeccable musicianship, I am so impressed with his tone quality and wondered what instrument he was playing. It turns out he was awarded Jacqueline du Pre's Stradivarius. He so richly deserves it.
I have listened to many recordings over the years of Bach Cello Suites by different artists. This wonderful rendition by István Várdai is currently my favorite with his impeccable technique, beautiful sound and well-tempered style. What I appreciate most is how he let the sound of the cello and Bach's creation reign supreme and avoid making his own musicality or interpretation the dominant feature. Thank you for uploading this recording. I will be back here to listen to this superb performance many more times in the years to come.

A year ago, he played this at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Lights almost out, alone with the cello on the stage, the audience had been breathing silently to the flow of music. It was a magnificent, magical journey, i will not forget. And the tickets for THIS were less, than a for a movie, which is quite common here. I am grateful for it, but it is still outrageous.
I just learned that István is playing the cello that Jacqueline de Prés used to play before her early demise. A worthy recipient for such precious legacy.

Haven't heard this cellist before but I will keep an eye out for him. Understated playing. The dark tones, even rhythm, and clear but not aggressive articulation make each note feel like a heart beat.
I like the performance, I don't know why. The sound is very simple and pure. I heard many other performances. The musician does not try to show himself, he shows the music
I love how each of these individual dances is in itself unique and inventive. I'm glad that there was a period in Bach's career in which he had the opportunity to write music like this as a diversion from writing for the church during his tenure in Cöthen under the Calvinist prince.
These Bach cello suites are such wonderful and comforting music. I listen to them to find peace and calm and compose myself for the day's trials and tribulations. Thank you!
I'm no expert regarding the cello and Bach; but I can see why today the cello is the most favored instrument used in the studios to convey the emotion of Love.
The cello shares much of its range with the human voice. A good cellist and/or composer is aware of this. IMNHO that helps this reach us. I salute ypur good taste in music.
There are so many versions of these suites and everyone puts their own interpretation into it. I must say this one stands among the best. Looking forward to Kanneh-Mason taking on this epic piece someday!

Cello Suite I, prelude is the first impression for all the suites and the prelude here is played wonderfully at a calming and not hurried tempo. Bravo!
This music takes me to my teen age time. Our music teacher a young lady used to play this with her violin very often. I used to listen her with great pleasure. Today it gives me a again great pleasure together some sadness. About 65 years past and it reminds me my youth and that beaitiful teacher who died years ago.
This is very near to perfect, one of the few celloists who play Bachs original bowings. And, besides his beautiful sound and the well controlled emotions and a very good feeling for timing, his adherance to Bachs original makes the musical line and inherent linear polyphony much more clear than the usual "romantic etude like" interpretations. A real gem :)
Mozart, Beethoven, I rarely tire. Satie, such restrictive mood, that meets those moments sacred, times of worry. Bach, alone, I am well enjoined to quiet or occasion, book at hand, and peace or time and reverie. Namaste and care, mhikl

Casals was rougher - a lot of attack. The recordings from the 1930s are incredible.
