I just watched the new top gun movie and it got me remembering this ride from when I was a kid in the 90s. Was the greatest roller coaster back then. It was hard to believe there could be anything better in the world, at the time. Even waiting in line was exciting.
Back in the 90's I used to love going to this amusement park as it was only a two hour drive from my home. Today, the park is no longer owned by Paramount and there is a considerable drop in quality and maintenance at the park. The Top Gun ride was renamed "Flight Deck" and is in serious need of a overhaul and paint job. The area where you stand in line and they simulated the shipboard activities of an aircraft carrier is completely broken down and falling apart.
i rode this back in either 99 or 2000 i was 14 or 15 , im 29 now , i still remember all the rides and how much fun i had AND the 3 20$ bills that i found in a little puddle of water around the nickelodeon section , best time ever!!
I liked when they used to play music when waiting in line from Top Gun. Last time I had a season pass was in 2007 and the last time I went to the park was in 2015.
Oh man i missed when it was called paramount Great America , Ive lived in San jose, California from 1991 till february 2021 then i moved to AZ and oh man i had so many memories there at that park.
They did back in the day! They also played the Top Gun theme song along with the other film scores that were Paramount productions throughout the park. Great America was the best in the 90s/early 2000s.
this coaster look better when it was black and when it had all its Top Gun theming the soundtrack would play in the line of the station which was cool nice to see the old Scenic Railway train in the background at the end of the video
bottle stations Battle stations welcome to top gun. please watch your head as you board the aircraft. one seated hold down the shoulder harness the rest close against your body. don't forget to fasten your safety belts. remember to keep your hands inside the vehicle at all time and enjoy your flight
It’s weird that California’s Great America was actually in better hands with Paramount. Cedar Fair has barely done anything with it and now this park’s closing in 2033. Literally the 1 Example out of all 5 Paramount Parks that didn’t get lucky with Cedar Fair and I doubt Six Flags has any other interests.
Flight Deck now has an new colour scheme which is red track with white supports. I've only seen pictures of it but I think it looks nicer than ever before. Nice video. :)
why did they get rid of all the theming that made it look like a flight deck when they renamed it flight deck? why couldnt they just paint it to look like the flight deck of another carrier if they couldnt use top gun theming? they kept most of the carrier-related themes anyways, why did they do what they did 2 the bit right before the lift hill? with the arrows? like, the uss hornet is LITERALLY right across the bay and has some great history (see: the splashdown of apollo 11)! us zoomers were ROBBED

I will always miss seeing that "top gun" sign thanks for the good old memories
Your welcome, glad you enjoyed it ! :-)
Believe it or Not, they keep it in their coaster/rides matinance workshop.

MrRobarino they repainted it red
i want and have been trying to find an audio of the activities
to date, Top Gun is still one of my all time favorite roller-coasters. it's sad what's happened to it.
Do you have any footage of the rest of the park from the 90s?
...getting a little nostalgia sick over here.

Sounds great and finding all that money as well !

Glad to find this. It brings back memories of that ride. Rode it in both 1994 and 1999. Amazing how much it all changed since 1996.
When I worked at Paramount`s Great America I swepted the queline when this ride was Top Gun.
Look at the vacant parking lot before the SF 49ers stadium was built.
Man I miss back in the day Great America! Top Gun was my favorite! Ohh and The Deimen!
The only thing that would make this ride complete if they had Danger Zone playing.

Great video, thanks for this! Excellent camera work especially considering the equipment available in 1996!
I still think it was too brief! Some of us would stick around after we got off work. We would sometimes go on it 4 or 5 times back to back. Loved it!
If I could go back to 2006 I would change my life.
I always imagined Kenny Loggin's Danger Zone would be playing while riding.
Wow, this is a great video, especially for 1996. Thanks for uploading.
Hey its supposed to be playing Danger Zone that was the best part and biggest difference today.
Thank you that's very kind of you to say so. It's nice to know the footage is appreciated.
Regards,
Anton
I remember being on this ride (last time I rode it was five years ago).
What camera did you use?
🍇 "Member" when smoke would fill the loading area when the coaster left the station.

Sorry to hear that ! :(
Everybody out here thinks he recorded this in the 90’s 🤣😭 if y’all clicked the description it clearly says it was recorded in 2006 💀
was this filmed in 2006 or 1996?
1996 !
ok thanks
Video was taken before the corkscrew started sinking into the reservoir. Cool...
No way, the coaster is sinking now?

I remember a kid died getting kicked in the head trying to sneak in.
The person decapitated by this ride was an adult. You’re thinking of Batman at Six Flags Over Georgia.
