i flew on one from cam rahn bay to pleiku in jan 1969, the very first day that i arrived from the states . i will never forget the flight line cargo acfts. full of black body bags.
I was a recip engine mech on these at Phan Rang AFB. From what I've read most of the K model Ranch Hands were shredded and burned back in the '80s due to high levels of dioxins in the air frame and skin from spraying Agent Orange. Patches was on display at the Air Force museum at Wright Patt, last I heard
@SgtGrant23 - The C-123 does indeed have reverse pitch. It made a big difference on the short fields in Vietnam. We only use it to back up when positioning the aircraft.
Some of it is oil. The oil drains down to the bottom on the old radial engines. I loved watching DC-3, Convair 240 & Martin 404 airliners when I was a kid & teen at my hometown airport. The Convair & Martin had the same engine (Pratt & Whitney R2800) & they would look at the engine, pick out a blade (3 blade props) & watch 12 blades go by that spot before they turned on the mags so the oil would circulate before the engine fired. So it's a mix of oil & excessive gas. No 4 blade props there then.
we need to have at least three airshows in late July, August and September to jusity the expense of flying her up and back. The last few years have been slow. Maybe next year!!
@Koaslice191 - Polly is alive and well. The Denali crash last year was another C-123 N709RR, "Large Marge." "Large Marge" was used in the flying scenes in the movie "Con Air" and was owned and operated by a small Alaskan air freight company, "All West Freight," at the time of the crash.
@Raguleader - It is certainly different! The jet engines are to provide additional power for takeoff on short fields. They aren't used at cruise. Another difference is that these jet engines run on gasoline (100LL) so there is no separate fuel system required.
@mrdeisel335: The C-123K has an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) that supplies 200 amps at 28 volts to start the engines. That's the sound you hear before the first engine cranks... the "putt-putt" sound that another poster mentioned.
Great video, marvelous sound! Tell me: all that white smoke right after startup is due to excess fuel in the cylinders prior to a cold start? Best regards!
Well, I am not much of an aircraft enginer right now, but I do try to get to know how things work. I may have gotten some talent. And, he designed it right here in mercer county.
Then your grandfather must have been Michael Stroukoff, and your mother must be his daughter Ann. You probably know that the MS-8 was originally designed as an "assault glider." The company was Chase Aircraft, whose chief designer was your grandfather. I hope you inherited some of his talents!
Hey, Does Tom Kravis still hang out withn you guys and Polly? I'm Bill "Jr" Leggett, the Beaver crew Chief. if you guys see the ol' Top Cat. please tell'em I said "HOWDY!".. lol.
Hank Fuddle the jets should be started just before takeoff because they inject a lot of FOD on taxi. I have used the jets in flight when a radial has been shut down

Awesome, I love these old aircrafts!
Is this one still in flyable condition?
SWEEETTT!!!
I stand corrected.
When do they start the jets?
The turbines are used on takeoff. Neptune PV2's have a similar system.

WHEN NOT RUNNING THE LOWER CYLINDER COLLECT OIL,sorry for caps
whats the range w a full payload?

@mvstargazer
I stand corrected. Sham it crashed, that is a nice plane.
Hey umm... My grand father actually designed the c-123. It was originaly called the ms-8.
Do those planes use an auxiliary engine to start the main radial engines?
yes
I believe this aircraft is sitting derelict in N.C.
Sing "Bookie" sing.

Polly is no more...she crashed in Denali Park last year and her pilot/owner was killed.
123, lovin' you baby was...easy for me...
I can't help but find the jet engines to be pretty entertaining. I guess they stopped doing that when the prop engines got more powerful?
R-2800 plus two J-85s
Too long ffotage of the put-put sound.....
