Agatha Christie's Grandson, Mathew Prichard, reminds us that behind the creator of detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple was a lady who loved her dogs, family and summers spent at Greenway.

Nadz Jonah She and the British mystery tradition was one of the glaring omissions from the London Olympics opening ceremony.

Rebecca Vance It was agreed; Sophie Hannah and Matthew Pritchard agreed that a new book be written. I agree with what you say, because Agatha had done what she had done in Curtain so no-one would exploit Poirot, like they have James Bond. But the public still love and clamour for Poirot - I was excited but at the same time livid, since Agatha would have been livid also, she detested him, but she brought comfort and happiness to everyone throughout the world and through war and afterwards, and no-one will ever be able to achieve that again.

Rebecca Vance I heartily agree. I was very weary about someone taking over another person's character. I wouldn't do it myself - never in a million years, since the creation of my own characters is immensely important to me, speaking as a novelist myself. And I noticed that, even though I have never read any of Sophie Hannah's books, that there was a similarity to the style that Agatha would have written in. The short, snappy sentencing, no long drawn descriptions, simple to read, easy to follow. But you are right, no-one will ever be the real Christie, other than Agatha herself. But it was a warm sensation to be on the hunt again with Poirot in a new adventure, despite my feelings.

The problem with Sophie Hannah's approach is that she overloads and complicates the plot with two many theories and details, losing dynamic momentum and cohesion . It is not surprising that an average Christie is a third of the size of the recent Sophie Hannah Poirot novels.
