  • On June 6, 2012-the 68th anniversary of D-Day-a statue of Maj. Dick Winters was unveiled in the Normandy village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. Winters was the commander of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division after they parachuted into Normandy on June 6, 1944. His heroism and leadership was documented in the Stephen Ambrose book and mini-series "Band of Brothers". A young student named Jordan Brown-who lives just a few miles from Winters' Pennsylvania home-raised $99,000 selling armbands stamped with a phrase Winters used: "Hang Tough." The money was used to help pay for the statue of the late Mr. Winters that now looks over the Normandy countryside.
    From CBS News.
Clarification: The "Grandpa, were you a hero" story was not Winters' own story. He was recalling a letter he received from a fellow Easy Company veteran, Sgt. Mike Ranney. But I still cry every time I hear it.

"Mr. Winters..so impressive that he is still alive and so lucid...etc.". Seriously...I wish I could earn 6 figures making those kind of errors. I believe Maj. Dick Winters died in January 2011. The gentleman being interviewed is Bill Guarnere - another member of Easy Company. And you can tell the guy who did the Interview doesn't want to correct her (Gayle) - he kind of goes ..Uhhhh...and then quietly mumbles Bill Guarnere's name. Good Grief !! And I'm not even an American. Guess Gayle didn't watch the B of Bs series - those guys are too memorable to get their names confused.
" We Few...We Happy Few...We Band of Brothers". They don't call them The Greatest Generation for nothing. LEST WE FORGET.

We thank Easy Company and their colleagues to achieve great things. The world could do with their attitude now. We have that here in the UK to get a better world, though some don't want or think that is possible. Science and engineering should help make for a better world, not just politicians or gobshites online.. Think before opening mouth could be a new mantra, not a podcast rant. Sorry. Best to all.

They really were the greatest generation because they loved the country that they fought for. Not like today half of Americans hate America. It really is sad.

A lot of that is Canadian as they got the first film of D Day back to us. It was a scoop as the Yanks and Brits wanted to be first. The first Allied invasion of France was led by 5,000 Canadians. Almost half were wiped out as we had a lot to learn and did from how to attack that defense. It saved live for sure on D Day.
