The most melancholy, chilling, awesome experience I've had in ages. Not really a game (all you do is roam this island off the coast of Scotland for an hour) so much as it is a bizarre story that you sort of live. But that is amazing if you let yourself "feel" it. This trailer captures the mood near-perfectly.

I just got done playing it for the second time, and I missed things that I didn't see the first time. It's all about exploration and mystery. The sounds and visuals are so well done you can almost fill the wind in your hair! It's a beautiful, short, simple game.

Can I just say that it's SOOOO amazing to hear live musicians on a game soundtrack? Congratulations to the composers/sound-designers and the studios that allow them to make the best product they possibly can by injecting their soundtrack with instruments, not samples!!! I cannot wait to hear more, and I applaud what I've seen and heard so far!

after playing this game once, i actually still re-watch the trailer every now and again when i remember about it, and the locations and sounds actually stir up chilling memories. when a one-hour-and-a-bit-long game can have that effect, the fact that the gameplay is non-existent just becomes unimportant because it makes gameplay in a world like this completely unnecessary.

    "I've begun my voyage
in a paper boat without a bottom.
I will fly to the moon in it. I've been folded along a crease in time-
A weakness in the sheet of life.
Now you've settled on the opposite side of the paper to me. I can see your traces in the ink
    that soaks through the fiber-
the pulped vegetation. When we become waterlogged
    and the cage disintegrates,
we will intermingle, and this paper aeroplane leaves the cliff edge
and carves parallel vapor trails in the dark.
    We will come together."

I find myself still coming back to watch this trailer every so often because even this, just like the game itself, succeeds in creating a special kind of atmosphere - where the music and the visuals and the spoken word are all balanced just perfectly, such that they take you to another place for a brief time, you become totally absorbed in it... the ultimate escapism. It really is beautiful, and it stays with you.

I agree. This is most certainly art. In fact I'm in a Digital Media class right now while typing this. I came to watch this trailer because we are currently learning how to build/work in a game engine, and my teacher brought this game up because of the unique ideas, game designs and excellent story. Someone like me has to write a script, storyboard/sketch it, model all the characters in 3D modeling, build the terrain with custom built models and program it in an engine. All very artistic.

This made my heart flutter and my soul cry. There is one other game I've purchased that is like this.. called "The Path". No weapons, no violence, no fast paced level building. Video games really are starting to expand and show real value. Sort of like movies. We go to the movies to see beauty, humor, and to go on explorations with the characters. That is what video games are becoming. Our lives are beautiful and filled with lovely things, and so are the visions bleeding out of creative minds.

    It is a game, it isn't a game, games have these requirements A B C D E..., it doesn't fill every one--
Who gives a fuck, we are all referring to the exact same experience. To me, the question of whether it is a game has few implications on the impact of your experience playing this 'thing', it is simply an argument over terminology.
At best the argument is important for vague wavy philosophical questions about whether 'anything can be a game', what is 'fundamental to a game' etc, but if we snap back to reality it really is a useless arbitrary discussion. I call this a game because what else would I call it, do I want to be a pretentious douche and say 'I loved playing the latest non-game'? I say we can rely on our intuition for what is a game, we don't need a bullet-point list of requirements, except in very esoteric academic circumstances. lol :^)

Ashen There’s such a broad spectrum of games and but it’s about if you have an open mind to these different categories. “Serious” gamers only play games that require skills and strategy but a majority of genuine games are meant for appreciation of art and work and other factors. Sometimes, these games don’t have action, but just meaning. You’re still walking and controlling your character. Don’t get me wrong I love first person shooters and skill based games but sometimes it’s about the experience and the story and if “serious” gamers can’t appreciate that then they aren’t “serious” gamers.

this title probably has a very small target audience just because of how avantgarde it is. But the way it portrays feelings like grief, love and remorse and manages to immerse you, is incredible.

Games like Gone Home get way too much credit but this is the one, this is the game that started the whole thing. This is the game that made people think 'could video games actually be art?'

Imagination has nothing to do with this... thing. I regularly play cRPGs and adventure games with actual depth and a meaningful world which coincides with the plot, lore, setting and characters.
I wasted money on a game which tells me a story and does nothing else. It is a horrible way for games to present any sort of narrative. If there was no force-fed story and some form of interaction, I'd have more respect for Dear Esther, but I paid $10 for an uninspiring story with too much detail for what the player was able to experience. This game would have been much better off as a novel, doomed to plague the shelves of Goodwill.

Dear Esther is a remarkable unique experience, it's not a "game" as much as it is the interactive exploration of a story. You roam the island catching glimpses of the story and viewing areas that tie into what has been mentioned. Also the graphics though dated are still gorgeous along with mesmerizing.

It's very rare that I still think about a game after I complete it. But this isn't a game, it's an experience that you need to be open to, so that you can fully embrace it.

Music, sounds, and graphics makes me so deep in melancholy, then I think about my passing life. All of this, only watching trailer.

well it is important ,even dear esther has gameplay the most simplest of them all ...but yet very beautiful...that's what art is which keeps you wondering ..how a simple game like this can stay with you for a long time ...

I found this a rather intriguing experience. The combination of the island, music and narration was superb. While I didn't know what was going on at first I found that the different stories started to entangle into one. It's got me coming up with two theories of what actually transpired. Either way; People shouldn't be calling this a game, rather an interactive experience. This game talks to you on a subconscious level and if you're open for this kind of thing, Dear Esther won't disappoint you.

I played through three times already, and each time, I discover something new. I am even sharing the experience (except the finale) with my four-year-old son. He's mesmerized by the caves.

There is no goal. It's just a man and his flashlight walking around the island (controlled by you), and each place triggers a letter to "Esther." It's very beautiful :)

Bought this in the Steam sale. Best $2.50 I've ever spent on there. It's like I was interacting with a novel, in an expertly crafted and articulate 3-d world. You don't shoot a gun, or cut guys in half. You walk. And listen to the narrator craft an open ended story that lets the player draw his own conclusions. I cannot recommend this game enough. It's interactive storytelling. It's brilliant.

By far one of the most unique experiences to exist in gaming today. It becomes longer than 1 hour if you really take the time to explore and leave no nook undiscovered. I will happily take creative and invigorating story over main stream action any day. Especially when you take into account that 7 people created it. Dear Esther does not disappoint. More than worth the $10.

This game sort of reminds me of a visual novel, except that it's a whole world to explore with gorgeous graphics and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. I will definitely be purchasing a copy and hopefully be enjoying a great portion of gameplay tomorrow.

A beautiful poem, a strange mistery, an unpleasantly realistic feeling that you are there, probably the closest feeling you will ever have in real life that will explain death to you. A poem in a game, unusual, strange, and completely worth 3 euros. 2 hours of art, love it!

I've heard of this game. I thought it came out a year or two ago. It was supposed to be a big deal, since there hadn't been any other horror games that came out that year. It also received high praise for atmosphere. I had no idea that it hadn't officially come out yet. I think I'll keep an eye out for this.

Played twice through. Both different sides to the story almost, considering the emotions and diction. Truly a beautiful game. Hands down one of my new favorites. Perfect getaway from LoL / Halo / Killing Floor. It really shook me; the way it captured such a simple event.

It's not a game, but art.
And like it is with every form of art I can understand that it's not for everybody.
I personally enjoyed it very very much and was deeply moved by it. The scenes, the insinuations, the many interpretations of the story behind it. And the voice of the narrator was just great.
And my gosh .. that cave.
Still, as I said, I can understand if people don't like it. Some will find it boring, some will find it too complicated and some will enjoy it.
    So no need for hating.

Purchasing a soundtrack on Steam will simply download the soundtrack into the game folder for the game in question. You won't have to have Steam running to play them or anything; they're just files you can copy to your music folder or wherever else you want.
At least it has been with other games with soundtracks.. others show up in the "Tools" section

This game has probably the best map design I've ever seen. Turning grass, inability to jump that made some desired places inaccessible, and a few other minor things bothered me, but the overall impression is still great. It was easy to immerse in game's atmosphere and actually "feel" the island and caves, not just let them pass on the screen and forget right away, as it would be in most action-packed games.

Just finished it. This is something else all together; a new experience that is unlike any I have ever seen. A must buy if you are looking for a new and beautiful experience. Do not play this as a game, for this is not a video game it is something without proper definition. More like a good book infused with poetry; while at the same time a master artist depicts your path and a hidden orchestra plays though your emotions. Enjoy :)

I think so, and that's why I'm definitely going to buy it. In all those years that have passed since Myst nothing has really come close to it in my opinion. Well maybe Machinarium in some sort of way, it was very original. Dear Esther looks like it's more about the story and less about the puzzles, I could be wrong of course. But it certainly looks amazing, and lots of people seem to like it.
