They don't revolve her entire personality around her disability and she becomes such an integral part of the team, that it's often forgotten she's blind just because of how capable and independent she is. Before metal bending, she was pretty useless in metal. she’s also a supporting character. Earth bending has the most casting time out of all the powers too.

Me and my sister got our mom to binge the entire series with us. Our mom loves toph, but every time they remind us she's blind, our mom would be so confused like "wait, since when is she blind? She doesn't act like she is." It made it so much more entertaining to watch.

0:40-0:48 Toph will forever be my favorite female character/bender from ATLA. The fact that she didn't see Bending(get it?) & had feelings for Sokka if only fate hadn't interrupted, is still a great & well-written lesson about moving on & one-sided love.
This is prime representation because the show doesn't tell you every 5 minutes that Toph is blind , it reminds us every 5 mins with these jokes that although Toph is blind Toph isn't any different than the rest of them. The shows these days are like a show with Toph and her parents who keep reminding us that Toph is special for no other reason than being blind.

Its kinda cool and reassuring that the reason why a lot of these jokes land is because Toph IS so capable that the gang legit forgets she has a disability.
there's being cool despite having a disability. than there's being cool, because you have a disability. and there is the ultimate being cool and having a disability. the first is showing that you can still be fun and personable despite having a disability. the second is showing people that your disability helps you look at the world in a cool and interesting way, and having them enter a world they wouldn't have entered otherwise. the third is the best, showing that you are an intriguing person, whether or not you are disabled, you just happen to be.
fun fact: theres the writers had to rewrite things a few times because sometimes they would literally forget that toph was blind because she was so capable of doing everything all the time.
From my knowledge when someone's blind they have a milky film over their eyes so it appears to be greyish in appearance. If she wasn't blind she would have a more saturated coloring to them :/

I think the air currents made by airbending would be especially obvious to Toph. Though not brought up in TLA, but in LOK we find that airbenders shave their heads to detect these air currents.

This is actually how I react to my friends whenever they make remarks about smell. I was born with congenital anosmia, and believe it or not, it has very obvious downsides such as… not being able to know what I smell like. But after living with it so long, I’ve adapted to the point where everyone forgets I can’t smell

I love how both Katara and Sokka apologize for forgetting that she's blind, but she doesn't hold it against them; she understands that her situation is different, but doesn't make that everyone else's problem.

0:40-0:48 Toph will forever be my favorite female character/bender from ATLA. The fact that she didn't see Bending(get it?) & had feelings for Sokka if only fate hadn't interrupted, is still a great & well-written lesson about moving on & one-sided love.
This is prime representation because the show doesn't tell you every 5 minutes that Toph is blind , it reminds us every 5 mins with these jokes that although Toph is blind Toph isn't any different than the rest of them. The shows these days are like a show with Toph and her parents who keep reminding us that Toph is special for no other reason than being blind.
She's so capable, everyone forgets she's blind.

Its kinda cool and reassuring that the reason why a lot of these jokes land is because Toph IS so capable that the gang legit forgets she has a disability.
there's being cool despite having a disability. than there's being cool, because you have a disability. and there is the ultimate being cool and having a disability. the first is showing that you can still be fun and personable despite having a disability. the second is showing people that your disability helps you look at the world in a cool and interesting way, and having them enter a world they wouldn't have entered otherwise. the third is the best, showing that you are an intriguing person, whether or not you are disabled, you just happen to be.
fun fact: theres the writers had to rewrite things a few times because sometimes they would literally forget that toph was blind because she was so capable of doing everything all the time.

From my knowledge when someone's blind they have a milky film over their eyes so it appears to be greyish in appearance. If she wasn't blind she would have a more saturated coloring to them :/

I think the best yet all around funniest part about Avatar when it came to Toph was the fact that you really did forget she was blind until it was pointed out. Or at least I did anyway. Though I guess that's what made it funnier, that fact that you totally forgot so when it was called out you were like "Ohh that's right" then started laughing
Exactly, lmao. Especially that one time when Sokka sent Katara a letter supposedly from Toph, and immediately she yells at him because Toph can't write. I was like "Ooooooooh right" XD
I guess thats what made it so funny, you could relate to the characters bc they forgot often as well, so the realization just made people laugh, I love this shows awareness and how they knew how to make people laugh so well.

That moment when you realize that Toph was probably fearful of Aang for a bit at first because with his air bending he could remain unseen by her earth bending. But then she got over it real quick because Aang never stopped talking so she could actually always know where he is at

I think the air currents made by airbending would be especially obvious to Toph. Though not brought up in TLA, but in LOK we find that airbenders shave their heads to detect these air currents.

This is actually how I react to my friends whenever they make remarks about smell. I was born with congenital anosmia, and believe it or not, it has very obvious downsides such as… not being able to know what I smell like. But after living with it so long, I’ve adapted to the point where everyone forgets I can’t smell
