- DCS Update 2.9.3.51704 just dropped and with it came texture upgrades to most of the Flaming Cliffs 3 (FC3) aircraft. As far as I can tell, the following FC3 aircraft cockpit textures have been upgraded: A-10A, F-15C, Su-27, Su-33, J-11A, Su-25, and Su-25T. The only odd one out is the MiG-29C.

I think the mig29 was one of the most impressive fc3 textures before the update... the other modules definitely deserved improvements
The MiG29 is coming in full fidelity, makes sense they wouldn't spend time on the FC3 version
Make sense 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Mig-29 update was not mentioned in the newsletter for FC3 Update either. So they left this module unchanged it seems.
Before the cockpit had "baked shadows", which means shadows were drawn directly unto textures and were permanent, immovable. It's an old technique that initially was the only solution for realistic shadows and later was used as resource saving technique because real-time shadows were expensive for hardware to render. But technology has evolved and real-time shadows are no longer an issue.
Thus the new textures are clean of that and use natural real-time shadows instead. That's why the look a lot better and instruments are more easily readable.
Real time shadow on downgraded textures :)).
@@knuckles7410 The only percieved "downgrade" is because they are much higher resolution and thus less grainy and simply looking cleaner because of that.
Does it kill FPS a bit? Potato PC player here lol
@@doge407 if you can play literally any game that isnt minecraft this will not be an issue, as op said, hardware made realtime shadows a piece of cake
(though i wouldn't try playing this on a laptop or smth)
@@Laerei Nope, you can clearly see that the glass reflections are of a lower quality on the newer textures.
Excellent video. Good to see ED paying attention to the old modules finally. The Huey, F-5, & Mi-8 would be welcome additions to bring to the modern day DCS standards.
F-5 is getting an overhaul at some point. Huey and Mi-8 definitely need some love especially when the Chinook brings in new DCS logistics
None of those were made by ED, so they have nothing to do with updating the textures on them.
@@RedFail1-1 They were made by Belsimtek, ED acquired those guys a few years back if I'm correct.
@King2Stone Yeah, ED have openly said in some of the newsletters that they're revamping thr F-5. For the UH-1 and Mi-8 those are pray as you may cause ED hasn't said anything about it but they do seem to be revisiting their older modules.
@@sonniedae6398 True, but that little engine overhaul they did for the Huey a while back show signs of hope for us haha.
the dedication Tuuvas has is amazing. imagine remembering to do a in-cockpit recording of every FC3 aircraft before hitting the update button and then re-record every track for every FC3 aircraft after downloading this huge patch and making this video. Thanks Tuuvas.
The older cockpits looked like they had way better textures while the newer ones have better 3d models and instrument contrast.
Nah man, the old cockpits had just broken lighting. Tbh this video doesnt really show how terrible the F-15C cockpit often looked. New one is way better.
I mean other than the A-10A they're all the same model still. The lighting fixes has to do with DCS's Physics Based Rendering (PBR) which is a set of extra texture files that tell the game how light reflects off of surfaces. Whether it's metallic, rough, smooth, and even making light reflect as to appear like there's depth to parts of the model where it's actually flat so that you can add smaller details like rivets without increasing the polycount.
Before the FC3 aircraft used an old PBR model so they didn't look as nice as nice as newer aircraft. The models haven't changed much if at all for most of them.
@@sonniedae6398 The old cockpits also used baked shadows, which is basically just fake shadows put into the textures. The new textures use dynamic lighting from the game lighting
@jesphillips2193 Yes but the new system uses specific roughmet texture files to determine how light reacts on different surfaces. I didn't meant to say that the shadows are apart of the texture, I meant the way light interacts with the surface is determined with a texture that tells the engine how to render that surface aswell as the color provided by the diffuse texture and the bump map provided by the normal texture.
Thanks for making a video that illustrates the differences. Much appreciate.
Lighting changes are probably due to the new Physically Based Rendering (PBR) added.
Thank you! I knew it was one of those acronyms
I also think before the lighting was just broken by some update. Most FC3 cockpits just didnt look right, and worse than in earlier videos.
Nice comparisons. Man I really want the Su-25 to get an external update too
Thanks, Sport! I'm currently trying to plan out how I want to compare the external models next. It's possible the Frogfoots did get an external update.
Congrats on the call out in the recent HIP Games video, hopefully that will drive more viewers to your channel!
I find these before-after comparisons very very important for stuff like texture or 3d model updates.
So thanks for that! Makes it more obvious what has changed
Great comparison, thanks for the video! Sometimes I'm not sure which one is better, because the change is so stark, but new one is obviously much more detailed. Sometimes it looks like a plane renovation even. 🙂
I'm with you 100% on the TF-51D Mustang upgrade to multi-crew as I often get asked to help teach Mustang handling tips and being able to instruct from the back seat would be awesome! Thanks for your video 😉
Love your channel! @AIRWARFAREGROUP
Thanks for the comparisons!
Epic, I'll definitely buy FC3 when it comes on sale
Awesome! Thanks for the video! Was looking for something that would showcase the difference! =)
Good job Tuuvas ❤ will recommend your vid
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Thats visibility is great thing. In some planes i had difficulties to see instruments, especially when sun was shining up high.
This is a very welcome update! Hopefully we will get these touch ups to come to other modules! The F-18 exterior really needs some work IMO. F-5 needs some love too, they announced they were improving it awhile ago, but still nothing.
i agree the f18 3d model looks odd and bad
The A-10C II external model uses simlar textures to the A-10A, could do with an A-10C III. if you don't belive me then look at the textures on the pylons compared to the A-10A lol
THANK YOU, this is the video, that the ED one should've been!
Detailing the actual changes and not some cool, fast cut, xxx and beyond video^^
I honestly like the previous weathered look more than the update. It's what I'm used to in the real world.
Consoles dont retain their perfect blacked out look for long after a deployment or 2. Also, once the A/C gets rotated to a rag squadron you can give up on cockpit beautification 180 day touch ups for the most part.
So nice to see, that those arcade plane users finally see what DCS could be like for them :) A job well done indeed.
This is how we fly our arcade planes www.jaycar.com.au/medias/sys_master/images/images/10192473063454/XC5802-usb-retro-arcade-game-controllerImageMain-515.jpg
Got the F-16C a few months ago for a astonishing price during a sale. Blown away by the quality!
little update: I've made some comparison screenshots in the F-15 and the Su-33 and... I'm not impressed.
IF you compare it with the old community cockpits (Casper and Devrim respectively).
Yes, text readability is now way better and they removed the wrong-looking glassy effect on dials, but texture / roughness wise, the mods still look mostly better o_O
(except the A-10A, where they made a whooping 336MB cockpit, vs. the 40-60 MB cockpits of the other FC3 planes)
I liked the previous cockpit textures better, especially the A-10A. Su-25 is the only one I would agree is an improvement. Glad I'm not the only one seeing it. Great job with the A/B comparison, seamless.
The Su-25 didn't get an update...
@@RedFail1-1 You may be correct, but at 1:38, Tuuvas shows the post-update Su-25 and -25T cockpit with updated textures. Maybe that's what I'm seeing. But I live in the A-10 and I really don't like the new cockpit.
i only have FC3 and didn't see it coming so i am very happy, especially a-10 textures, it looked painful before the update
I liked the improvement, but what I really wanted is the quality of textures in a full fidelity module.
maybe because mig 29 will have high fidelity module. so they decided to not update it. hmmm i dont know
Probably...or it was already good and everything was just upgraded up to its standard
Don't get my hopes up.
@@Leadlobotamist sure we will have mig 29 full fidelity. maybe.. just about 20 years hahahaha.
@@LeadlobotamistThey literallly announced that they are doing an FF MiG-29A.
@botamist "And joining REDFOR in Full Fidelity. Fulcrum-A" -DCS 2024 and Beyond
I wonder if one day we’ll see a full fidelity SU-25T. One can only dream.
Might get Flaming Cliffs just to see what the A-10A is like.
It is great and unless you really need a A-10C cockpit or a full fidelity model then you really dont need to buy the A-10C II for the price
Perhaps the reason why the MiG-29 hasn't been updated is because we *should* be getting the full fidelity MiG-29A this year. That's just a best-guess though.
I honestly do kinda like the game a little bit darker (my reshade settings does reduce lighting a bit), but ngl I like the texture upgrades.
I found what changed on the mig 29, only textures bug fixing like the radio numbers that before was broken
1:29 shaders materials plays a role too.
New ones look like they're fresh from factory. Not bad but I hope they add worn cockpits especially for A10 and SU-25.
The A-10A has a weathered option in the customise cockpit setting for the aircraft
The Mig-29 was not mentioned in the changelog either, so I'm assuming they deemed it good enough or we'll get the most impressive FC3 aircraft the (DCS) world has ever seen.
man you're fast
That's what she said 😭
poor fiance :D @@Tuuvas
the mig 29 will be getting a full fidelity module and my guess is they wont be updating the fc3 version anymore
They will most likely backport the textures. like they did with the A-10
the reflections in the su 33 where textures only, looked weird to me. like it more how it is now
I didn’t know they did the su-25s as well!!
I think that there was a communication issue with the twitter announcement and update, because it looks like whoever runs the twitter doesn't know either. 😂
I think the F-15 after panels are good but I like the before front dash better
Technically they added physical based rendering to the textures, which is why things should be more photorealistic.
F-5 is still the red headed step child
Should read MiG-29S as that is how that particular Cyrillic letter is transcribed.
OH MY GOD GUYS, IT'S HAPPENING, THEY UPDATED THE POLYGON COUNT ON THE WARTHOG FLIGHT STICK!!!
Dog, if this prevents the whole glare thing in the 33 for the mfd, it would already be 10x better. The 33 looks vastly better.
Does anyone know if in FC3 it is possible to use à anti-ship missile on the SU-33 ? Back in Lock On it was a possibility !
Good morning... what about external, have they changed the external appearance?
They have, although i think its the same textures, it looks like they react better with lighting.
Acording to the changelog the 29 didnt got any update this time
Thanks for comparison, big help understanding awesome.
I think Mig-29 was skipped cause the high fidelity version is inbound?
It was already updated before I do believe
The F-15C needs new A/B effects
is there any way to install this FSR3 mod .. in to dcs ?
The Russian and Chinese aircraft got an upgrade in everything in my opinion
Now if we could get fixed animations (ie F15C taxi lights). It’s really too bad ED doesn’t provide clickabilty, redkod showed the possibilities it would be better if official
Is it me, or is there a mix up between before & after for the F-15C? After looks so much worse.
It's easiest to tell the "After" based on the seat cushion texture. It's an upgrade there, but I do agree I liked the old textures more in the F-15C
When will the Mig21 get a facelift?
What about optimisation?
There’s been a massive call for the inner cockpit lighting and reflections. It didn’t feature for obvious reasons when mirrors it’s one thing but completely another to do reflections inside of a box that’s inside of a box 😂 (that’s the best way to explain how to get light to reflect inside your cockpit). But it looks like they are on to it. Enjoy it will be returning to how you like it well a mix of both but all new update videos are always met with analysis but never the golden rule. It’s early so expect it to get better in the coming months. Like DLSS I don’t like it causes ghosting too much on mine… Yh it’s only just landed imagine how good it’s gonna get when the maps Treble in size… and they are trust me you ALL will be turning that on in the future or you’ll be waiting to load for a day and a half 😂 so it’s all good things to come really don’t let any hype get you down it’s fantastic times for DCs
Meanwhile F-15C still have radar showing incorrect attitude 😕
dont really like the -33 update either, but the changes are 100% welcome! and i dont really like your new pfp, the old one fit better IMO
lol it'll fit a bit better once I figure out how I want to do gameplay and tutorial videos going forward. At least I hope it will. It'll depend on the reception to the new video style
How to install this upgrade?
Just download and update to the latest open beta ... If there's still such, since they moving towards a unified upgrading solution, which means, there will be just one branch. No more open beta vs stable.
Just note, this is stable platform only. Not open beta.
There's no longer a Stable nor Open Beta version of DCS. It is all simply: DCS. As long as you update, you'll get these texture upgrades
Whaat?? Good to know!@@Tuuvas
@@Tuuvas What about multi-threading? Is that seamless now as well?
Unfortunately no, not yet. There's still a separate MT option
@@Tuuvas Thanks buddy.
Don't forget they are building up a mig-29 model. Probably they don't want people to stick to the flaming cliffs 3 model
Or alternatively they're focusing on it primarily to get it polished for FF and will backport it later. The A-10C II did backport models onto the original C.
Am I crazy or the before looks actually better/more realistic almost in every case?
Agreed, wish there was a "Rollback" option.
I've been waiting for improvements to the core gameplay, like better AI, for almost 20 years.
Now people go crazy about a texture update, which mods have done since forever.
The flight sim genre and DCS especially is just depressing these days.
How is this a downgrade?
My game won't start. Tips from anyone?
Check task manager if there isn't a dcs already running.
Or run the DCS Repair Tool. Google for results.
That is all great. How about fixing lag in online lobbies? Chosing an airplane and airfield is a fking mess.
There is different teams working in Servers and textures. its not one or the other.
I think that the new textures are amazing, sad to see so many ungrateful bastards in the comments.
When they give it a reshade and call it a texture update.
I dont care much about textures, i need Fucntional Update to FC3.
Clickable cockpit, ability to put modern missiles (like R77 variants, why is it only J-11 and mig29 that have it), radar updates.
You know.
FC3 is still a Buy-2-Play module, it is a content we pay money for.
I'm not sure what you mean by Buy-2-Play. I mean it is something you pay to use but what do you mean by that?
Also unfortunately for the vast majority of the Redfor FC3 aircraft updating them isn't feasible for ED. Russia is incredibly restrictive with their aircrafts being simulated and so ED can't even make the earliest Su-27 variant full fidelity. The Mig-29 is coming as full fidelity with all the bells and whistles but only as the Mig-29A variant with those older avionics and weapons. As for the rest of FC3 updating them to be more modern just sadly isn't a realistic goal given how much work would need to be done to improve all this and not to mention it would be pretty much all guess work if they were trying to get around Russia's preventative laws.
i dont see a lot of difference
f15c interior looks worse imo
agreed
So fkn stupid they are calling it a "free" upgrade. Like what, you originally planned on making people pay more money for some slightly updated textures? We should be grateful it's free? Makes no sense to throw "free upgrade" around. So fkn stupid.
Also the Su-25 wasn't upgraded and the Su-25T isn't part of FC3 and also wasn't upgraded. The MiG-29 didn't get one because they are making a Full Fidelity MiG-29A and will probably just slap the external model they use for it on the 29A/C/S/G
What I'm saying is. Rather than throw "free" in our faces, just call it what it is. Texture Updates. There is no "upgrade" to begin with. Nothing has changed, we didn't get anything new and nothing was added. It's literally the same exact FC3 it was before, it just looks like it should and not like textures from 2010, which they were.
If you get angry that a 2014 module got an upgrade, you need to stop playing. FC3 is the first module to get the upgrade. other older modules should get it as well, like the f-5. huey, f-86 and more. the textures look amazing. and the su-25 has been updated. look at the video smh
A quality downgrade painted as an upgrade? Content creators and dumb fanboys buying into it? Yep, totally DCS.
FREE........Ofcourse. It's update
