  • What actually WORKS when emotions are overwhelming, and why dealing with overwhelming emotions is absolutely necessary if you want to be able to think clearly and logically.

Divorce is dangerous, especially for men. Just two days ago I took a suicide education and prevention seminar with one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas. At the start of the seminar she taught us about the main risk factors... and I realized that my clients have EVERY SINGLE ONE. From the loss of a primary relationship. to feeling out of control and trapped, to feeling like a burden to their loved ones and having a sense of 'thwarted belonging'.
Dealing with overwhelming emotions is a necessity when it comes to not simply surviving divorce.
Many men pride themselves on being logical, rational... well, given the statistics it isn't logical to ignore your emotional pain. The only rational solution is to deal with it in the most effective, efficient manner possible so you can think clearly, make logical decisions and move forward with your life. If you don't, your nervous system will stay in fight/flight, or worse, in freeze, and you will lose access to the most rational parts of your brain.
I'm a divorce recovery coach for men, and I offer high impact, highly personalized programs to help my clients stop the pain of divorce, regain their confidence and move forward with purpose, hope and energy.

That’s funny. The breathing technique is combat breathing that the Marine Corps taught us. I was worried this was setting off some sort of latent mental trauma since it was kicking in my combat breathing reactions. Good to know it’s probably not that. Was really worried about since I couldn’t pinpoint any issues on that front.

It sounds like you have a good resource there with the breathing, though depending on your history it could bring up some past issues. In my experience you can usually trust yourself - if you slow down and look at what's going on inside you will likely be able to pinpoint if there is something from the past coming up you need to address.
