And also connect it to what's coming in Half Life 2. There's a lot of musical motifs that remind you of what is to come, and how the actions of everyone in Black Mesa is about to impact humanity.
Yeah!, meanwhile in half life 1, the sky looks normal, listen a gun fire and an opstray and soldiers are chilling and they are winning against aliens and in that section where you have the tactical map the radio message in all of the sudden he says that they are pulling out, what a change to the serfice tention in Black Mesa it's way better than half life 1, it's one of my favorite chapters.
I love how the game made this track diegetic. When you enter the map the track plays, but 0:44 through 0:51 will loop endlessly until you draw agro from something, at which point it skips to 0:53
0:44 to 0:51 is the ambient track. Doesn't matter if you aggro'd something or not, it plays. 0:53 plays when the gargantua starts chasing you through road tunnels after having scared various HECU Soldiers shitless for their lives.
To quote Vinny from Vinesauce: "Picture it this way, chat: That fucking noise wakes you up, you are in the middle of a very nice dream. *Loud Roar* *"Meh, probably outside."* *Soldiers: "NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW BLOW IT!!! SH*T!!!"* *Gargantua Burst through* **Screams down the tunnel while running like a maniac**
I really like the loop in release version when you first hear the third EBS message in the Jeep and then go through abandoned field hospital, where piles upon piles of alien and HECU grunts lie dead, and then that radio transmission on IFAK is cracking in the radio waves, damn, it's the most atmospheric moment in ALL Half-Life series I could remember except maybe Beta Air-Ex station.
The intensity of that moment really makes it feel like you're there and in intense fear. Not even the military, which have the whole time been shown to be savagely relentless killers can hold back the aliens now. And with them beginning to leave, you're going to be even more stranded than before, with the newly empowered alien swarm ready to kill you and airstrikes coming at any moment. It instills an almost hopeless fear.

Yeah and for a player that played the original many times it really was quite shocking. In the original they shoot you out into a mechanic shop, with the chase happening later. Instead they cut that and you go right to the chase scene.
Corporal Xander Yeah... now there's the radio with the wounded marine going "Any Station, any station, this is Echo-3-Juliet. My team... ambushed... I am injured. I'm losing a lot of blood here... left leg."
The first version of this scene took me by surprise, and in a good way. The one where you get shot out of the vents. In the original Half-Life and the most recent release of Black Mesa, the scene with you being shot out of the vents involves a garage where you can just back up quickly enough to avoid falling down, thus being able to shoot the enemies below at your leisure. But before the newest release of Black Mesa where you were shot out of the vents? It took me by surprise because I was like "Oh, this part. Time to nudge my way forward and figure out how far I need to back up before I'm safe." But then I was instantly shot out of the vents. My first thought was: "Oh, I guess they fixed that bug on this par-" Aaaand then I saw the Gargantua. I still think both scenes are epic. While the newest release of Black Mesa has a scene where you find the Marines trying to blow up the Gargantua, I still love it because it helps to show just how desperate the situation is for the military.
This, right here, is my favourite piece of this game’s original soundtrack Not only is it fantastically implemented when you hear the third EAS broadcast, get chased by the gargantua, and use the air strike tactical map, it also makes you think of how truly disastrous the Black Mesa incident is going to be for humanity It makes you think about the military having to evacuating because of how f**ked the situation has become, the eventual worldwide portal storms, and the inevitable invasion of the Combine/seven hour war that would end in humanity’s enslavement All of it because of an experiment you took part in that went wrong in every way possible Truly a fantastic moment only Half-Life is able to create
