I think I read that Dag F didn't make the team for the 1972 Sapporo games or he retired before that.

+Hattie M. No, Dag was there. But he was overtrained and suffering from a groin injury: 13th on both 1500 mtrs and 10k. After Sapporo, the Professional Liga ISSL was founded and they wanted him to join the competition , but Fornaess retired from speedskating, aged only 24 years.

Thanks for the reply Marcus.:) Humm reminds me of Beth Heiden who over trained and hurt her ankle but did manage a bronze in the 3,000 in Lake Placid.I've seen a few rinks in Norway,Valle Hoven,Hamar and good old Bislett.I got to meet Dan Jansen hear my home and Eric Heiden near my old house near San Diego in 1980,what a thrill that way!!!

Yeah, Beth was great, too. I still can see her fall in The Hague (World Championships Allround 1979) on the 3k and yet winning the race and the title. Of course she was a great cyclist ... AND a great runner, too (setting USA records as a junior athlete). Cheerio!

Do you live in Norway?I've been there a fe times and have friends there. Beth came back to win a bike race in Colorado at age 50.Her kids bike and the daughter did for awhile at the U of Colorado in Boulder.I think her 2 sons and daughter preferred to stay in college than train in sports. Her brother Eric's kids are much younger ( 12 and 14 ).The daughter sings opera ( you can find her on You Tube under Zoe Heiden ).The son who is 12 likes to snowboard (jump with tricks in the air etc ).Maybe he'll be on the US team someday?

+Hattie M. Nope, I'm Dutch, and sometimes sentimentally dreaming away about those good ole times when the Scandinavian speedskaters were both 'our' rivals and friends. And USA's Eric Heiden is still a great Hero here. He himself was already very skilled with his self-made speedskating board during summer training, so I'm not really surprised about his son's skills. ;-)
