The first thing I would do would be opening it to count the SSD chips haha But I’m still happy with M1, probably I will replace it only with a M3 or M4. M1 is already amazing.
Those benchmarks and the prevalence of Thermal Throttling will be what makes or breaks the M2 for many. Without the fan and the more power hungry chip, it’s gonna be interesting to see if Apple somehow was able to make the passive cooling system effective. It’ll also be interesting to see if the 2 base models of the M1 and M2 have a $200 price difference in the performance, as that’s what most people will be looking for likely.
The Air is not meant for sustained loads, it is an ultrabook at heart and even Apple says buy a Mac with a fan for sustained workloads. So, no, it will def not be make or break as pro users should not buy this if they want prolonged intensive usage as it has no fans and will obviously thermal throttle.
It's all about the thermal throttling. All the reviews on the M2 13 MacBook Pro were focused on issues related to slow hard drives and the M2 being hotter. I'm sure they used the same cheap hard drives so the 256 model Air model should have similar issues and the 256 Pro. The big difference is going to be the fan in the Pro since the Air doesn't have one. The M1 didn't need a fan. I'm with you Gary that is was a brilliant machine and had plenty of performance. If this M2 chip runs hotter and the only way to cool it down is to throttle then it could actually be the same or worse than the M1. I have a feeling that your instincts on buying a M1 at much cheaper price is going to be the smart move.
What do you mean "cheap hard drives"? Don't say something you don't even understand. Having single 256gb NAND chip is not cheap. The reason it being slower is simply because it uses a single NAND instead of two in the previous M1 versions.
@@lunariz97 So call it a 'cheaper hard drive solution' instead. You can call it whatever you want because we all know that using a single 256gb NAND chip is cheaper than using dual 128gb NAND chips when chips are in short supply. The bottom line is that there is no way this should be slower than it was on the previous generation, especially if you are paying more.
@@xemtra Yea it would have been cheaper to get single 256 but because of the supply issue. As long as they have enough stock I don't mind the speed drop rather having a paper launch with 2x128.
I held on to my 2017 MacBook Air for an extra year because I heard the Magsafe connector was coming back. It saved my computer from taking a trip to the floor at least twice in 4 years. An invaluable feature for my clumsy ways. The battery just started acting up, and the M2 was on sale, so I just bought one. It is arriving this afternoon.
Nice review. Funny how Apple sent the 512GB model instead the base one with the slower SSD issues. We will just wait for the "Can you really use the M2 Macbook Air as your only video editting computer" video, featuring the base model of course, and see how it compares to the M1 base model that you did almost two years ago. Would much appreciate to see the time differences between these two base models for the same load.
Hi Gary, loving the new MacBook Air. Wish you mentioned the differences of Thunderbolt 3 and 4 since they look exactly the same to a lot of people. Awesome video! Can’t wait to see more of the M2 MBA
On Apple's site, it says Thunderbolt / USB 4 for both the M1 and M2 MacBook Air models. Thunderbolt version unspecified. It doesn't say Thunderbolt 4. I'm inclined to think it is USB-4 + TB-3. Ma
I´m worried about the heat, make some tests and tell us how it behaves. More power consumption and more screen it is more heat and less battery life, I think. Compare the M1 and the M2 with same characteristics and tell us if the heat makes the M2 computer slower than the M1.
I personally think that it's fine, people are showing 8k raw video editing on these machines and say it throttles, bro come on nobody is going to do that on these laptops. This laptop is going to be powerful and cool for all your everyday tasks and the battery life will be the same as the MacBook air M1.
M2 has beaten the M1 in every performance test I've seen so far and had the same battery life. Even if the M2 throttles, so does the M1. Besides, the whole point is that Apple chips don't heat up that much in most usage anyway, and unless you've been hitting the CPU/GPU hard for 5+ minutes, you're going to get full performance from either chip. Outside of gaming, rendering, or encoding, there are very few things that use 100% performance for a long period of time. Even normal editing of 4K video, photo editing, or even coding will have a moments of rest between high CPU use, during which the CPU/GPU doesn't use very much power at all.
It’d be really nice if apple kept the m1 MacBook Air design going forward and called it the MacBook, brought the 12 inch MacBook back and made a 15 inch MacBook Air. Then they would have every screen size all the way up to 16 inches. I feel like that would be perfect.
Thank you for being the only tech youtuber who has correctly stated that the M2 Macbook Air has Thunderbolt 3! The review videos having been frustrating to watch when stating incorrect specs.
I know youre probably working on review of the M2 MacBook Air and as a fellow Northeast Ohioan, I would love to see a real life performance review. Because of my job I type for hours on the computer, so ergonomics and typing comfort are essential for me. I am in the market for a new MBA, I just don't know if I should go for the M1 or the M2. Biggest appeal for the M2 is the MagSafe, but I am worried about the lack of the wedge-shape. You mentioned that when typing for a long time on the 14" MBP your wrists get a little sore. If you have a chance to type for a while on the M2 MBA, please let me know if the problem persists or disappears because of the lower height of the keyboard. If it hurts, that would be a deal breaker for me. Thanks in advance.
If you're on a 2012 MBA and the main thing you do is typing as opposed to more demanding tasks, I would 100% buy the entry level M1 MBA. At first, I wanted to buy the MacBook Pro 13 or 14 inch but you man convinced me to buy the MacBook Air. Overall, I payed 1,420$.
Just get 16GB of RAM and the speed difference will be moot. It is only slow in swap and transfers, normal read and writes never really use the full speed (check your daily routine to see that). So if you have 16GB of RAM you will hardly ever need swap so you will not get slowdowns.
which is better to get, m1 macbook pro or the m2 macbook air (cuz they’re in the same price range). it would be better if you do a comparison video of the two
Literally I swapped my old Mac editing station for a 14” and literally the only time I notice the notch? When people mention it in videos 😅 I’ve never even seen it while working that I can think of Also I kinda wish I would have went with the bigger model for more video editing and multitasking space 🤷🏼♂️ but that portability is so nice I freaking love that apple managed to do what I wished for in high school!!! Making the 13” and other small MacBooks actually strong enough to do real work! I love the new Mac line up and all of them can edit photo and video. I just had a base model Mac mini that was a power house for cheap cheap
Coming from a 13" 2015 MBP ,I purposely bought the MBP 16 M1 Pro Because I was sold on the speakers, the battery (quite ridiculous, last me an entire working day with 40% left) ' and the return of magsafe and the screen.
I’m a student that doesn’t use any photo editing apps or stuff like that. I just web browse and watch movies on RUclips and Netflix. Which do you guys think is better for me? Is the display and screen upgrade significant to be worth the extra $200? Is m2 faster for web browsing?
Can you do a comparison between the m2 macbook air and the 14 inch Macbook Pro m1 pro? The way I plan to configure the m2 air. It's a similar price to an open box 14 pro. I like the portability of the air. And if the air is relatively capable. I would choose it over the m1 pro power.
Lame that the M2 MBA doesn't support dual external displays natively, which is strictly a software/driver limitation. I just don't get Apple's reluctance to support MST when they collaborated with Intel in the design of Thunderbolt and MST is part of the official specs!
Glad I ordered the starlight. I thought apple let RUclipsrs keep the products. What’s the point of sending it n returning it just for views or do u get compensated for reviewing it?
Hey man, I am looking to purchase a MacBook Air. Should I go with MacBook Air m1 or m2. The base price of m1 is ₹86k (1075$) and m2 is ₹101k (1375$). Should on paper there is a difference of 300$. But I can sell the free AirPods that will come with m2 air.. to lower the price but it will still cost me ₹100k (1275$). So what should I do??
The differences are good but what people don't realise is that nothing is actually wrong with the m1 air, they just made what's already good a bit better. The screen is a bit bigger but if you're in the market for a 13 inch device then .3 inches wouldn't really affect your decision by a big step. The speakers are supposed to be better but the m1 air speakers are not bad at all. The battery life is LITERALLY the same. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY... the m1 air has been around long enough for us to know that it's a tried and tested product and won't fail on you. If you have the budget for an m2 then IMO you should get an upgraded m1 and it'll actually last you longer.
The real deal is the bigger screen! BUT if you look carefully the number of pixels is exactly the same which means we don’t get more technical space rather more zoom ish.
I want a comparison video between this and the m1 MacBook air in terms of video editing, specs, design, and power efficiency.

Just get 16GB of RAM and the speed difference will be moot. It is only slow in swap and transfers, normal read and writes never really use the full speed (check your daily routine to see that). So if you have 16GB of RAM you will hardly ever need swap so you will not get slowdowns.
It’s good for typing documents 🏆
Please do photo editing comparison with lightroom
I am upgrading from a 2018 air so I decided to just full send and get the m2 air
i have the m1 air. i run my whole business on it. i do photo editing and restoration. i been interested in the new air. i hope to see some bench marks
which is better to get, m1 macbook pro or the m2 macbook air (cuz they’re in the same price range). it would be better if you do a comparison video of the two
Literally I swapped my old Mac editing station for a 14” and literally the only time I notice the notch? When people mention it in videos 😅 I’ve never even seen it while working that I can think of
Also I kinda wish I would have went with the bigger model for more video editing and multitasking space 🤷🏼♂️ but that portability is so nice
I freaking love that apple managed to do what I wished for in high school!!!
Can’t wait for mine to arrive.
That notch and I love the touchbar. Nope. Good with my MBP.
I want it to come out in Blue!
thanks for the M1 MBA comparison!!!
I have the M1 MacBook Air and my only gripe is that I wish I got the 512GB instead of the 256GB - I have to carry an external drive with me everywhere
They want to push power users up the pricing ladder to the 14/16 Pro line, sadly

Glad I ordered the starlight. I thought apple let RUclipsrs keep the products. What’s the point of sending it n returning it just for views or do u get compensated for reviewing it?
ur not a proper dad tech reviewer until u have an apple watch tan on ur wrist 😂😂😂
I bought the starlight and I can’t wait to get my hands on it🤩
Someone has been out XDD. Look at that wrist tan!
