My biggest frustration with most videos about this film is that most people don’t understand what the character Megan actually is. Imagine the awkward and difficult position Cooper would be in to leave, go home to his SGT’s wife and his superiors and say “trust me, werwolves got them”
21:44 that’s Megan. After Megan is shot, you’ll notice that her werewolf transformation is missing an eye. Ryan appears to have not participated in the house raid. I love this movie. I’m glad it’s getting a video analysis.
And to think....dog soldiers wasn't a Werewolf movie....it was a Soldier movie with werewolves. Also the hanging bodies were the rest of Ryans special forces team
A lot of times when they shot movies they shot them in another place instead of where the place is on the movies because it is cheaper than going to that place.
I have watched this film many times, and it was only recently that I noticed what look like claw scars on Megan's arm. Most of the movie she has the longer sleeve shirt on, but when she is only wearing the tank top is when you see it. And even after all of this time, I missed the scene where Megan and Ryan avoided looking at each other. The "tells" are all thru out the movie, but so subtle that you can miss them even after several viewings.
Ah, this good old gem. Me and a buddy of mine watched this when we were like, 11 years. It scared the living daylight out of us. That shot of Megan with the werewolves behind her is one of the creepiest shots ever. Today I really enjoy the movie and some of the goofy characters like Spoon. Poor fella, went out like a champ at least. Love the scene where he hits a werewolfs hand with the hammer as he's boarding up the place 😂
I have seen just about every werewolf movie out there. The story and plot are really well thought out. This was my favorite werewolf depiction until the first three Underworld movies arrived on the scene. Great job on the summary and explanation, Cogan!
I've always thought that Dog Soldiers has, without a doubt, THE best-looking werewolves in any movie ever.... EVER. I swear it's like they didn't even use costumes or makeup or anything to make these werewolves instead I think they just went and filmed actual, real living werewolves. They are so great looking.
I cant forget this movie, my mom made me and my brother watch this when we were children, and it honestly scared the shit out of me and my brother. Between that and my mom making us also watch the thing when I was 8.
'Eyebrows joined in the middle' is a reference to medieval European werewolf mythology, where such joined eyebrows were considered a sign of Lycanthropy - a way to detect a werewolf in their human form. It played into some very ugly werewolf panics that resulted in several people being executed for no reason across Europe in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries.
I thought it was also a reference to the film "The company of wolves" 1984. Where Angela Lansbury warns her granddaughter, Red Reding Hood, to beware men with unibrows.
@@Tom_Samad Depends on the country. In 1507 a French judge decided, that werewolves were not a thing, and that the defendant in front of him (who had savagely murdered a couple of people, including little children, and cannibalised them) was mentally ill. To clarify this - according to the judge, there was no lycanthropy, only mental illness. People tried to use it as sort of an insanity defense, like "the devil made me do it", but after 1507 this didn't work anymore in France. This specific defendant was sent to a Franciscan monastery for treatment (or, tbh, most likely just to be locked away for the rest of eternity), because one of the three miracles of St. Francis was taming the Wolf of Gubbio - a man-eating monster wolf, that had killed a bunch of villagers. Therefore Franciscan monks were deemed competent, when it came to taking care of a wannabe werewolf. In other news, it is very likely that all three miracles of St. Francis were fake. He had tried to found his own order of monks, but the pope wouldn't allow it, because at that time the church thought there were already enough orders and he should just join one of the existing ones. But Francis wanted to be a cult leader, not a follower. So he set up 3 miracles, two of them most likely with the help of a professional animal trainer: 1. Preaching to the birds. A trainer could have helped him to attract or tame wild birds for this one, so they would come to him on command. 2. The Wolf of Gubbio. The story sounds very much as if Francis placed a large trained wolfdog in a forest nearby and let it attack and kill villagers working on the fields or trying to travel. Then he showed up with an unspecified "man", the "wolf" came to them and sat down in front of them like a dog. After that it was tame and was fed and taken care of by the villagers like a normal dog. The "man" seems to have been the trainer, who called his killer wolfdog back and stopped it from further attacking people. 3. Coming down from a mountain retreat with stigmata. Francis climbed a mountain with sharp rocks and thorn bushes on his own, stayed there for a little bit and returned with crucifixion wounds, that looked suspiciously as if they had been made with sharp rocks and a homemade thorn crown. They were also incorrect: Romans placed the nails for the arms between the two large bones of the lower arms, not in the palm. The large bones would hold the crucified person in place, even when the flesh started to tear under the weight. Palms have no bones, that are strong enough to pull the same trick, so they would rip out pretty quickly. Francis had palm wounds - but an actual victim of crucifixion (like, let's say, Christ) would have had arm wounds instead. Palm stigmata are fake by definition. So... medieval conman Frank probably had some kids eaten by a trained wolfdog to become an official cult leader with saint status. Let that sink in.
One of if not the best werewolf movie ever made. I got to speak to Sean Pertwee about this movie and he said it was one of his favorite movies he ever made.
Most realistic scenes to me: 1. Hammering werewolf hand through the door 2. Boxing werewolf in kitchen 3. Digging through walls to escape. 4. Werewolf costumes were on point (imo) This is my top werewolf movie
Roanoke does a good vid about this too. Was around the time of underworld so werewolves were being used alot and this is one of the few that was semi-original of a story
Maybe I missed it... did you mention how they eat the stew once they get in the house. One of them says how good the stew is, and another one says it's pork... Never eat the stew at a werewolf's home. Good video👍🏼
I was rewatching this masterpiece yesterday. I love it, since I was a kid. Very good movie. Edit: I like that soldier "Spoon" manages to defeat a werewolf in a 1v1 match in that kitchen. Too bad he dies when the second one arrives.
It's a brilliant film, and if you can find the group commentary where the director and a lot of the crew do a very drunk commentary track it's absolutely hilarious. They're all ripping the piss out of each other
Brilliant film with some brilliant one liners. Spoons hand to hand fight with the lycan in the kitchen is an awesome scene that really makes you start cheering for him and adrenaline pump. In my top 3 werewolf films for sure, I might be biased being British but still an awesome film.
Eyebrows that meet in the middle is definitely werewolf lore, it’s definitely been in other movies, I think from memory A Company of Wolves, or maybe Silver Bullet.
I remember watching this when I was hella young, like around 11-14. Only seen it twice but loved it. Glad to know others feel the same and I need to watch it again asap
I got this on vhs when i was little from blockbuster and watched it in my room alone. First legit horror movie I had ever seen and I have been hooked ever since.
I think like how you can hold off on the transformation taking place during the full moon for a few hours; you can hold off on transforming back when the night is over. Or maybe their family and Megan can't, as they are civilians. But Ryan was a soldier and already more aggressive as a human. So perhaps he was the only one who could stay in his wolf form past sunrise. Megan did say they were good people. So maybe she and the family never wanted to/knew you could stay in wolf form past sunrise.
@@ptolemeeselenion1542 They had skeletons in their closets, dead bodies strung up in their basement, as well as a human meat stew cooking on the stove. They were definitely messed up, and not just for being werewolves.
Meg was not infected until she cut herself on one of the windows that had lycan blood on it. That is why she didn't transform until after she was infected later in the night. The lycan in the basement didn't change back to human at sunrise (moon fall) because it had a sword stuck through it preventing transformation back to human.
This was one of those late night movies that was on when I was working 2nd shift and going to school. I finally caught the entire movie one night and loved it! If you like this, might I suggest you take a look at a movie called Adrenaline: Fear The Rush that has Natasha Henstridge and Chris Lambert. It's another late night horror sci-fi flick and it's actually really, really damn good. Even gave me a nightmare once as a grown ass adult.

The Dog Soldiers werewolf action figure is also one of the best there is. Really has that towering on two hind legs and enormous open jaws scare that the film does.

The lycans look great. Cursed is a film I'd love to see you cover Teen wolf wasn't so bad as a TV show as well lots of monsters in that. Blood and chocolate is another werewolf movie that's pretty interesting.
Have loved this movie for a long time and managed to snag a DVD of it with the original booklet and producer commentary a couple weeks ago. Definitely happy
I was working on a paper theorizing things that would have to be true if werewolves were hiding among humanity and in this one of the things I hypothesize was that werewolves would either instantly have a commanding authority over dogs simply because that the dogs would recognize the werewolf as an alpha or dogs would be instantly distrusting of werewolves recognizing them as a predator that one of the two would have occur
There's an excellent book called Thor, where the family dog recognises a dodgy relative who visits as a werewolf and Thor defends his family. It's actually quite moving.
I think as werewolf movies go. These are by far the best looking werewolves in any movie. End credits have a picture of a werewolf in a bedroom, that image still sticks with me
saw this movie way back in the day. Really good, was shocked to see a "b rated" movie b eing so good. Really good writing, directing, and acting. If a bigger budget, would have been a massive movie.
One thing you got wrong was that the young girl gave the man the silver letter opener as a present for getting a job. They were on the trip to relax before he had to start his job.
So, you're right about the name, in both senses. In Irish Gaelige, it's pronounced "Oo-ah" and in Scots Gaelic, it's "oo-ath", though chances are the family calls themselves "Yew-ah" to avoid detection from anyone who actually speaks Gaelic. Also, fun fact, unlike most mythologies where werewolves/were-creatures are bad, the were-creatures in Gaelic myth are a good thing. Myths tell of "wolf-headed" soldiers who would protect the high king. One could even argue that Cu Chulainn from Irish myth is one, as his name means "Hound of Chulainn" and he would undergo a similar painful transformation.
From the story of Cú Chulainn i was told growing up, he took the name of the hound of Chulainn after killing the blacksmith Chulainn's guard dog with a hurley and sliotar and serving as a proverbial guard dog in its stead. Also the wolf headed soldiers were probably inspired by the wolves of Ossory, being that they have similar stories.
@@thomasdowling2011 That much is true from the myth, but pop culture often shows his transformation to be more beastial and less of a namesake, kind of like how the werewolves from the movie Howl are shown. They're still human, but with a lot more beast-like features and Cu Chulainn is often shown similarly during his Riastad.
That's a good thought. He probably couldn't control it yet and had trouble changing back. I imagine that would take some practice, as the transformation into a werewolf seems to be involuntary (they can delay it, but can't prevent it from happening), and transforming back may take some effort. Especially when you've somehow made it into a dark basement room, where sunlight can't hit you directly. Plus the sun in northern countries like Scotland is weak, and you will see a grey sky and some light in the morning, before it actually starts to rise. Not enough UV light to change back?
As a 'werewolf' lover since I was a wee little texan, this one really stoked my love of the genre. I continue to watch this movie several times a year and love it each and every time. Thanx and take care.
One of my favorite hidden gems from childhood! You can definitely also see inspiration taken from this movie in the Underworld lycans. Also I’ve seen several articles about the sequel from 2021 stating that it’s a possibility & that the best time to do it would be indeed now more than ever. So fingers crossed maybe we do get it!
man i wish they made that sequel lol every other decade i have watched this again for old times sake because it really is that good even for a lower budget film. they did it just right imo.

such a good movie to show off that practical monsters are so much more scary than cgi. them being actually there inside a house like that makes my brain freak out
I watched behind the scenes and it turns out originally Megan had cut her hand on glass, that night, that had werewolf blood on it. So she was infected. It's at 9:03-9:05 where she places her hands on the broken window. The scene cuts before it shows that she cut her hand.
Neil Marshall (director) addressed this in his commentary, Megan was already a werewolf and her cutting her hand on the window was a dangling thread for the sequel. The British Government would have access to werewolf DNA after examining the site.
Fantastic and underrated werewolf film. I have to say that these are my favourite werewolves on screen thus far. Love the concept of the look, how they move, collaborate with each other etc. You should do Project Metal Beast if you haven't seen / reviewed already.
thanks for covering my favourite werewolf film, wouldn't describe it as a horror comedy though more horror action. but that might be more the difference between British production and American/Hollywood styles of things.

Imagine the awkward and difficult position Cooper would be in to leave, go home to his SGT’s wife and his superiors and say “trust me, werwolves got them”
I like how the news article had the actual score to the soccer game that year. Nice little detail.
Perhaps, but it was also one of the hikers we saw in the beginning. The guy who died with the silver letter opener. That's how it got there.
its so weird how a movie clearly based in a specific area is NEVER filmed in that area and always filmed in another country with a similar look
That happens all the time, many movies "shot in Alaska" are rarely ever shot in Alaska. LOL
@@Jack_Jack_907 the mummy set in egypt shot in Morocco lol. countless other examples
@@laurbster2680 YES!! HAHAHA
A lot of times when they shot movies they shot them in another place instead of where the place is on the movies because it is cheaper than going to that place.

Dog Soldiers, The Howling, An American Werewolf in London, and Ginger Snaps are my favourite werewolf movies!
THANK YOU 🥺💖💖
Ginger snaps is ❤❤❤❤❤
I love this movie. The Dog Soldiers werewolves were the bet looking werewolves I've ever seen. The special effects/make-up team did an excellent job.
6:51 Sean Pertwee, just gotta love this guy as he can be so hillarious!
This is easily one of the best werewolf movies ever. So so so underrated!!
They are so great looking.
yup
Oh yes! Fantastic design. Bipedal throughout, and half man, half wolf in the literal sense.
When he jumps in the back of the jeep with the WW and says
“ I hope I give you the 💩s “ 😂😂😂
@@rosevirgo5095 That movie was referencing the same mythology, so quite possibly.
Good thing Frida Kahlo wasn't born in Europe in the Sixteenth or Seventeeth centuries then!
So he set up 3 miracles, two of them most likely with the help of a professional animal trainer:
Ted Bundy had the occasional unibrow..
One of if not the best werewolf movie ever made. I got to speak to Sean Pertwee about this movie and he said it was one of his favorite movies he ever made.
My all time favorite werewolf movie! Thanks for making this!
One of my favorite movies ever. Fantastic performances, fist fight with a werewolf, explosion- it has everything.
Spoon was the most badass member of the squad "I hope I give the bloody shits" right before he gets eaten= LEGEND, RIP
Most realistic scenes to me:
1. Hammering werewolf hand through the door
2. Boxing werewolf in kitchen
3. Digging through walls to escape.
4. Werewolf costumes were on point (imo)
This is my top werewolf movie
@10:01 two soldiers didn’t run to the barn, only one did. The second soldier was the one that was taken earlier during the first attack
Roanoke does a good vid about this too. Was around the time of underworld so werewolves were being used alot and this is one of the few that was semi-original of a story
Yeah. Though I think Roanoke was wrong about Meghan becoming a werewolf during that night. She knew way too much about the family.
Maybe I missed it... did you mention how they eat the stew once they get in the house. One of them says how good the stew is, and another one says it's pork... Never eat the stew at a werewolf's home. Good video👍🏼
Human meat tastes like pork.
Source? Don’t ask me bro
I really love Dog Soldiers i first watched it when I was 7
I got this on vhs when i was little from blockbuster and watched it in my room alone.
She also said they were a pretty messed-up family. So whethee they were kind or unkind is subject to interpretation.
@@2005Aztek actually Megan was inflected long before that. A commenter mentioned she had claw marks on her arm. As she always wore long sleeves.
Love this Movie went to see it with my Grandad when it first came out in The Cinema brilliant movie got it on VHS and DVD.
Respect and keep up the epic work.
The Dog Soldiers werewolf action figure is also one of the best there is. Really has that towering on two hind legs and enormous open jaws scare that the film does.
Great film, remember watching this one valentines day with my dad and bf was one of the best valentines days I have had, we watched other films but this was only one I remember. The lycans look great.
Cursed is a film I'd love to see you cover
Teen wolf wasn't so bad as a TV show as well lots of monsters in that.
The best character was definitely Spoon, he literally fought a werewolf bare handed and would've won if that other werewolf didn't come along.😢
For real. I was hoping he would make it. He was badass
Dog Soldiers is an old favourite, it scared the pants off of me as a child
I think as werewolf movies go. These are by far the best looking werewolves in any movie. End credits have a picture of a werewolf in a bedroom, that image still sticks with me
saw this movie way back in the day. Really good, was shocked to see a "b rated" movie b eing so good. Really good writing, directing, and acting. If a bigger budget, would have been a massive movie.
This was the granddad to Underworld series
I remember my friends and i renting this film from Blockbuster as kids, we were terrified in such a good way. Great film, great memories
One thing you got wrong was that the young girl gave the man the silver letter opener as a present for getting a job. They were on the trip to relax before he had to start his job.
This is by far my favourite werewolf movie ever however Howl is my second favourite and I just love the actor who plays Sargent Wells
My fav film of all time! Thanks for uploading this!!
Ah the best line from any werewolf movie ever. "Have you tried licking your own balls yet?"
My theory on Ryan still being a werewolf in the morning was he was a new turn werewolf and it take longer from them to turn back to human form
So fingers crossed maybe we do get it!
i had forgotten about this movie and how good it was. going to have to watch it again sometime soon now.
Dog Soldiers is one of my absolute favorite Werewolf movies. The acting is some of the best thats done.
man i wish they made that sequel lol every other decade i have watched this again for old times sake because it really is that good even for a lower budget film. they did it just right imo.
This was one of the scariest werewolf movies I had ever seen. Being able to see them clearly they weren’t all shrouded in darkness they were smart like humans fast paced good tension and acting, the werewolves were crazy scary. the movie just worked!
I'm glad you covered this movie, it's a classic and I love it. Funny thing as well: this movie's being shown tonight on Film4 😂
Cogan is the best werewolf expert to ever live!!!!! You can take that to the bank haters!!!!!
Still one of my fave films. And of course has the best line in any movie - ever! What a character Spoon is ✊
such a good movie to show off that practical monsters are so much more scary than cgi. them being actually there inside a house like that makes my brain freak out
I honestly wouldn't mind if a DS sequel took the form of an audiobook.
There needs to be a Dog Soldiers game, where you play as Pvt. Cooper because he is the last one alive with Sam the dog
Id love it if you covered ginger snaps!
loved this one
Love this movie.
Punching him in bed never gets old. 😂
He's such a good actor.
I remember this movie well. This was a good movie and for us word of mouth got a lot of my friends to watch
My absolute favorite werewolf movie by far. I'm also a big fan of Sean Pertwee.
The howling and dog soldiers the two best werewolf movies I’ve seen
Love werewolf movies. Amazing lore and mythology.
"Eyebrows joined in the middle" is a really old folk belief on how you can tell if someone is a werewolf. I remember my Nan telling me about it. :)
Without question one of my favorite werewolf flicks out there it was cast exceptionally well & had great practical effects 🐾
I watched behind the scenes and it turns out originally Megan had cut her hand on glass, that night, that had werewolf blood on it. So she was infected. It's at 9:03-9:05 where she places her hands on the broken window. The scene cuts before it shows that she cut her hand.
No she had to be a werewolf before that she lived with them
Neil Marshall (director) addressed this in his commentary, Megan was already a werewolf and her cutting her hand on the window was a dangling thread for the sequel. The British Government would have access to werewolf DNA after examining the site.
But why wouldn't she transform right away
Dog Soldiers is one of my favorite movies ever!!! Also love Ginger Snaps, The Howling and American Werwolf in Paris.
Peace from germany!😁
How about American Werewolf in London?
I love this film. Amazingly effective for such a small budget.
He didn't turn back into a human because he has a sword through his chest.
Oh my god, I loved that movie so so so so much!! I'm happy that someone made a video about it.
I was looking for good werewolf movies and stumbled upon this one and Howl, both have become some of the better movies ive seen in years.
All time favorite horror movie. Best depiction of werewolves by far.
