I started on this journey because I felt I had hit a ceiling and started to wonder what’s left. I felt I was doing the same thing day in and day out. But now that I’m on my own and trying to make a go of my studio, I am loving my work again and finding that I’m truly getting back to doing what I love to do. And I’m doing it on my terms. Next week I’m off to the LA Small Business Expo to implement Chris’ advice and talk to a venue full of strangers. No selling, just getting to know people…wish me luck!

Great!!!!! I'm just about to turn 40, for personal reasons my life just took a 90 degrees turn, and I'm looking back at my old hobby: graphic design.
This is the reason why I've been watching as many videos as I could lately from you guys, so this new series is just made for me!

yes it is. we try to choose who we mentor on the show so that we cover the entire spectrum of people in their journey to design.
I started this way. I was an art major (painter). We didn't have computer design in school yet in 1990 and first employees back then, even in Silicon Valley where I lived, did not have huge portfolios of digital design. I became a web designer in the late 90s and in my first year of my 1st office job at a web agency, I was already working on websites for Oprah, Toyota, and Disney. In year 2 I was flow to LA to work on Lexus, worked on a NASA project! Lead the team on 1 of the first touch screen public space phones (for Hong Kong), in year 3 was an art director for the 8th largest company in the world. There was a huge shortage in the industry back then.
And after moving far away from the US and running my own small agencies for 15 years, I am trying to reintegrate into the Western world and the entire game has changed. My skills are better than ever, but I am making less than I did waiting tables during college. I was overly confident when I was young and now that I am an expert, I have zero confidence anymore. I am just starting to reintegrate for 6 months now and overwhelmed at how the game is played now. I also am concerned that no one would want a 50 year old on there team. Everyone is so damn young.
TragicOptimist keep at it. With time and sustained effort you will get the ball rolling again.

Fantastic advice here! I'm a 49-year old female, very introverted (INTJ) with degrees as a scientist but switched into web design/development. When I was about 20, I decided to take a couple of jobs waiting tables and tending bar and also worked a few retail jobs to force myself to learn the social skills I knew I would need later in life. I always knew I wanted to have a business at some point (had already had two small attempts by the time I was 30, even while earning science degrees and then Webmaster's Certification in Application Programming) and those skills have served me wonderfully. I've built my first web page back in 1997 but it was just a serious hobby until 2016 when. I have now been working my web design business seriously for about a year (on the side, still working full time job in same field for now) but am finding it easy to match up with people. I intuitively do what Chris recommends here. I never really sell. It just seems the conversations continually come up naturally. I'm just interested in people's stories and in ways to help them and opportunities naturally arise when the time is right. I love it! It's so easy! I am exponentially more comfortable and skilled at talking with people and making those connections than I was when young and timid and frankly, totally oblivious to others and I credit much of that to forcing myself to learn to connect with people I met everywhere. Great stuff!

I love the series where you mentor someone one-on-one because it's focused and I also get to see how active listening works. I'm also curious how both Melinda and Rebecca will develop through the different series ☺️
That last part made me feel grateful I grew up with a dad who is naturally curious of others. He can approach a stranger and not come off creepy and have a good conversation with them. He isn't in the design field but I learned how to be genuinely interested in others this way.
My mom, on the other hand, trained me when I was younger not to be afraid of talking to strangers by making it my responsibility to answer the house phone or give our order to the waiter.
All in all, tho I have great examples to learn from and know how to be intrigued by people... I find it hard to translate it when talking to clients. Maybe it's like what Chris said that I have an agenda coming into the conversation. I'll keep practicing and working on that aspect :)

I too am gettin back into Graphic Design & Illustration. I have been out for about 5-6 years because of family issues and I was trying to reinvent myself. Turns out I just neede to learn how to talk to people again. Still an introvert especially after dad passed.. kind of went backwards. I am watching as many videos and learning as much as I can so I can get back out there and take everythig he taught me to bring the company he left me back from the freezer. I have a lot to relearn but its worth it, ans so much more fufilling than the 8-9 I though I needed.

I'm 41 man, I think clients don't care about our ages, they just need someone who can trust on. I've already overcome that barrier. I mean, we worry more about that than our own clients.

I totally agree. If I was a movie producer and I wanted a great movie poster created to advertise the film, I am not going to pay attention to Drew Struzan's age. I just want the awesome work I know he can produce.
Hernán Vionnet I agree:) very much. 41 is still young:) But still, u had time to gather valuable experience. Im 47, but still i am as hungry as i where at 25. One of my favorite painters is closing in on 80, and still he produces paintings from his heart. I was holding a pencil when i was learning to walk. I am going to use it untill my least breath.

This is so true! We think that Design is something behind the computer, but only later you discover you have to go out there and talk, and do all these kind of things! Rebecca has some really great and honest question during the entire video, which really really helped me. One idea would be to do a video of this process of Cris or Rebeca meeting a client, and asking those business questions. Just to see that would be great!
I watch and appreciate all of your videos but this episode really hits home for me. I am 41 and left a career in management to pursue a career in graphic design. This feels like design therapy... like I’ve been looking in the wrong direction my whole design life
I am an extrovert. I took a personality test after this video, and landed on (ENFJ). Still I have a similar problem but in a different way. I have no problem going in to a crowd of complete strangers and talking to them. My problem is that I talk too much. I am afraid of the opposite of you, I am afraid of silence. So, I feel a need to fill the silence with my voice.
I need to ask questions and refrain from trying to finish other people’s sentences, then I’m there!
So even though I am an extrovert, I got a lot out of this video. Thank you.

I got work from Behance even though it's not really where I spend most of my time. For an introvert, any online exposure is a easy bonus you can't afford to lose.
Great new episode. It highlights all the challenges that any creative startup businesses will face regardless of experience. Added, the volume of work that you need to put in. In terms of social media review, company website review showing your process to make you stand out. Starting the art of listening to the needs of others rather than trying to sell.

I'm 40 and I feel really dry wasting my time in a career I hate. I work with a lot of young people and I realize my heart is still just as young, open and curious as theirs. As long as I don't let that part of me die, I can make this shift.

I tried to figure out how to conquer fear for years. Two ways to do it. Just do it (Rip off the band aid learn as you go and take the wins and losses) or become so good at something fear is basically eliminated. I prefer often the second one. Immerse yourself in whatever it is you want to get good at. Once you are at a level where you are good, fear is less of an issue and you are able to confidently engage in that craft. I am new to UX but everyday I am digging into it. I know with time UX will be something that is second nature.
Best part of this is "Don't Sell" but "Dig Deeper". Try to find the what problem the client has and try to see if it is something you are able to resolve. I have gotten into this before where I committed to something and later realized I was in over my head and had to back out. Very embarrassing. Study the person or business you are trying to help.
Now I know how to use the word "Why" to get the client value our work and feel ok for the price. Thanks chris.

First thought was that for people who have 10+ years of experince in the fields its easier to launch their own business but then i realised that we all have different struggles and its just an excuse to think that for somebody this path won't be so thorny

Rebecca - I'm also 40 something and I started my animation biz 6 years ago when my daughter was a toddler (she's 10 now) I needed to get out of the corporate rat race, determine my own hours and run the show. It has been the greatest and most frightening decision of my life! Your tone and concerns remind me so much of me when I first started out. I hope more women see this show and it encourages them to step out on their own too. There are amazing opportunities out there if you are brave and persevere! You and Chris are doing a great job keeping it real and authentic. I look forward to see your business progress

I also studied programming and web development way back when. Now, I'm going back to school to study Motion Design because I want to move into the future. When I was little and I started to enroll into my years of art education, I thought I was super smart to pick arts. Almost all my relatives have been actors, and I thought I was picking a job where I can draw and hide myself behind my drawings and never need to show my face. Years ago I realized how wrong I have been, and how the work starts from the self, otherwise it just doesn't happen well. Only when I started paying attention to who am I, I was able to produce better work.
But it took me ages to figure that's the path - the other was a path of laziness basically and hiding behind stuff.
I'm 32 and after watch this, it make me more confidence to start my own business that i love, design graphic the one i want to developed more far away, i start next month, this month will be the last month i work as an employer
it's never too late. follow your heart's desire.

Being a NYC fashion based web designer and in the same age bracket, I really love Rebecca's character. She reminds me of many of my acquaintances. Easy to understand where she's coming from. Anyway, the point is class background is something that you may want to start exploring in some interviews. It will take you to interesting places. Like I said, I love this channel and am really enjoying going through the videos. Thanks for making them!
what do you mean class background? can you expand on this?
Sure. What I mean is which class did someone grow up in such as poverty, working class, middle class, upper middle class, and upper class. I recommend reading "Class Matters" by bell hooks to understand more, but in general our parent's socioeconomic status as we were growing up determines so much about us and cuts through everything including identify, values, worldview, etc. The lessons our parents taught us, how we feel about money, what we do with the money we earn (aka how we spend, save, and invest or squander), how we treat other people, what we value, and more is influenced by our class background. I can also recommend Stokely Carmichael, "Wired for Wealth" by Drs. Brad and Ted Klontz, and Pierre Bourdieu especially "Distinction." You and I might not be able to relate about our shared experiences based on race, gender, sexual orientation, (because we are different in those immutable characteristics) etc., but if we were of the same class, class cuts through all of that and we could relate to each other on that level despite the differences in every other category. To use your language, class would be our connector. Since we live in such a class-based society, our class backgrounds are at the crux of our identity, so when you're speaking to your designers about why they charge a certain amount for a logo (i.e. $50 instead of 50K, which was the topic of discussion in the other video), I think it is really important to note and study how class influences those different mindsets becasue the influence is profound. More profound than I realized before I read all those texts I've recommended to you. I think you will be particularly interested to learn how class influences our thinking and psychology, so I think you might like starting with "Wired for Wealth." It will blow your mind.

2021 Update: I had a banner year in 2020. Keep at it folks because it all comes together with time. My first 2 years were the hardest, but once you gain 2-3 solid clients that's all I needed to keep it rolling nicely. Last year I doubled my income (along with a few freelancers). This year I'm taking it slower-as we moved to Nashville. But the nice thing is that all my clients came with me without a hiccup. I love being able to work from anywhere in my home studio. Just keep at it and work to get those corporate clients - most importantly get on their Preferred Vendor list. Then once you're in you're in!
Just a quick thought- I've been watching a lot of your older videos lately and sometimes you have a multi-part episode like this, but RUclips for some reason never skips to the second part after part 1. It's trying to send me to part 3 but I want part 2! So I will go search for it in a minute. Anyway, my idea is if you have a multi-part episode, can you put links to the other parts in the descriptions?
