For me Jeff Beck is the finest guitar player on this here planet. He’s the one guitarist who - even after all these years - can still cause my jaw to hit the floor with some sound that is so unexpected and extraordinary that it takes my breath away. That doesn’t mean that all his albums are good, however. I’m of the opinion that some musicians are almost too talented for their own good, and perhaps Beck is one of them. He’s so original, so mercurial that he was never able to get a group of musicians together and stick with them for more than a few months. Take his old friend Jimmy Page - technically not in the same league, but temperamentally much better suited to playing in a band and sticking with it. He could also write songs, which has never been Jeff Beck’s forte. My favourite album of his is ‘Blow By Blow’ because he was in the supremely capable hands of George Martin who helped craft an album that at once showed off Beck’s guitar wizardry to the full yet was very listenable as well. I’m a big fan of ‘There and Back’ too, another fine album.
In general I dislike guitar players widdling away for hours on end and loathe shredding. But Jeff Beck is capable of playing in so many different styles that he never gets boring and his solos don’t outstay their welcome.
Beautifully written and really nails the essence of Jeff Beck......if that's possible! I hear sounds coming from his guitar that literally change the freakin' gravity in the room!!! Jeff Beck is the one player(along with Hendrix) that all other guitarist's are completely in awe of, a common refrain being "HOW THE HELL DID HE DO THAT, AND WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? Beck should be checked for alien blood and then be locked up in a studio with an army of guitars, with 24hr. a day observation......secrets of universe will then be revealed. Blow By Blow and Wired should be put in a time capsule and shot out into space - the music within shows US to be highly evolved! Nice work, Patrick!

@@treffbennett6534 Beck is the one guitarist since Hendrix who has come close to or at times matched the Voodoo Chile's fire and creativity, while at the same time completely retaining his own identity.
Yardbirds must be the most prolific source of guitarists in all of history. Beck, Clapton, and Page. Sheesh.
Blow by Blow is _the_ rock instrumental album in my opinion. Perfect compositions, playing, and production.

Blow by Blow and Wired were the only two albums I bought, but I played the snot out of 'em.
Wired is the only album that I've owned on record, 8-track, cassette, CD, and digital. So, yes, I love Wired.

That's funny it's the first Beck album I had and also on 8-track even had one that I could tape over 8-tracks I didn't like
I love Wired and most people Know prefer that one over Blow by Blow ,but personally I love the later more.
RIP to a true under valued legend.
I cannot imagine a cooler person in the entire history of rock and roll than Jeff Beck. He's basically the only rock star I'd sit down and have a beer with.
everyone has there own view on artists like beck i see him as a fine guitar player who i admire and have some of his albums but like many seems to prefer not being in the spotlight
Since the day of its release, "There and Back" has remained my favorite Jeff Beck album. So many amazing songs! I was already a Jeff Beck enthusiast before the album's release, but once this LP came out, it was a total game changer. I don't know why "There and Back" is so frequently overlooked- it doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

I always thought Hendrix sat on the throne until I rediscovered Beck in the last 10 years or so, listening to more of his eclectic live stuff. Now I think the throne should be a comfy love seat with plenty of room for Hendrix and Beck.
I just discovered your channel and even though we have different musical tastes, you do a great presentation. I am mainly into funk and soul but have plenty of rock albums so it's great to learn about other artists like Aerosmith, Death, etc. This was my long winded way of saying great job! I love Jeff Beck so can't wait to watch this one. Hope you and your family are safe and well.
Blow By Blow is a flawless album and one of Jeff's finest. Not a bad track on it. Production is top shelf as is the collection of songs. And it features the simply amazing drumming of then teenager, Richard Bailey. He played way beyond his years. As for the BBA album, I actually saw that band when they were a 4 piece. Not sure they were using the name BBA yet but they have a lead vocalist, Kim Milford. Apparently he did not last long. I guess once he was gone they became BBA.
My favorite album is Wired because it has the best drumming on a Jeff Beck studio album by Narada Michael Walden
It's savage wild and the sound of the record is incredibly good
I'm a huge Narada fan. have you checked out his youtube page? he talks about his career and the players he recorded/played/toured with. McLaughlin, Bolin, Beck, etc. Its really cool. I loved his playing on Visions Of The Emerald Beyond.
Not to mention Jan on Blue Wind. My favorite JB album as well.

Great selection, being a drummer I love Space Boogie from there and back, Simon Phillips nailed that track. Jeff is one of the all time greats and is never afraid to step out of his comfort zone.
When you hear him play it can't be anyone else. I'm a big fan of the old stuff, but I think "Who Else?" and "You Had it Coming" kick ass!
I really dig You Had it Coming ..I saw Jeff live in Houston on that tour and it was an awesome show....

Who Else? Is great, too. And Emotion and Commotion is great IMO. I love all those atmospheric tunes. Jeff Beck is just a serious musician. He doesn’t care about being a rock star.

pete pardo love your show jeff becks playing just brings tears to my eyes so emotional blow by blow wired part of my childhood as allways spot on he never had a vocalist that fit his playing.he was still ascending when he died.keep on keeping on
Every Beck album has, at least, 1 or 2 , just kick ass tracks on it. Beck from 2003 and LoudHailer are 2 of my faves. He has progressed beyond blues and rock and has become a music genre all his own. He's always going above and beyond what everyone expects and that's what I love about Jeff.

Love Blow by Blow. Was disappointed by Wired though. It just sounded boring to me.
Maybe those songs are better live but that album just didn't do it for me.

Blow by Blow is one of the very few flawless albums you can find. Up there with Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue”, Pink Floyd’s DSOTM, the Beatles’ Revolver, Steely Dan’s Aja, etc.
Excellent video and the rankings damn close to what mine would be. He definitely is not afraid to take chances and confound the expectations of the listener with every phase of his career. I admire and expect that from him as he is my favorite guitarist of all time.
Jeff is my favourite, there's no one with his vocal phrasing and tone. I love that he's a maverick, unpredictable and fearless. My favourite album is probably 'Blow By Blow', particularly 'Diamond Dust', which is my favourite JB track of all time. It's a gorgeous blend of a Rock ballad with a jazz ensemble and George Martin's classical string arrangement - just exquisite! Thank you for covering Jeff's albums - very interesting!

This vid reminds by me of one very gaping hole in my collection !!! Recall loving all the 68-80 Beck on LP but never replaced most of that when I converted to CD (the vinyls are gone to the winds now ..) thanks for the vid Pete !
You mentioned Tommy Bolin, a great guitar player himself, who passed away on the opening night of his opening for Jeff Beck on Jeff's 1976 tour. Such a sad day for the Bolin family and music in general, on a tour that would of exposed Tommy Bolin to a much wider audience. And the awesome talent of Jeff Beck, I can't say enough nice things about him. His best album might be the one I am listening to at the time, whatever album that is at whatever time it is. Thanks For Your Musical Thoughtfulness.
On Billy Cobham’s solo album Spectrum (1973) Tommy Bolín sounds like Jeff Beck at times. Jeff even commented on it in a 1975 interview. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
@@CBrolleyYou have it backwards. Jeff moving to jazz fusion was due to Tommy Bolin playing on the Spectrum album. Carmine Appice who was the drummer in Beck Bogart and Appice tells the story of how he and Beck would drive around and Beck always was playing Spectrum and was influenced by Tommy Bolin

Supposed to go see him again next month 23rd May at, Sheffield City Hall, surprisingly it hasn’t been cancelled yet. My favourite album is Truth too. I feel the Live at Ronnie Scott’s cd is well worth an honourable mention, really enjoyed that Pete, thanks a lot.
Yes. The Ronnie Scott's recording is excellent. I'm waiting to be told the Brum gig has been cancelled. Maybe they will re schedule or just hang onto the money as long as possible.
I have a lot of time for "Who Else" I would put it in my top six with, "Truth" "Beckola" "Blow by Blow" "Wired" and "Flash". He's had so many different styles, but i don't really dislike any of them.
Definitely worth a mention is his brilliant playing on the incredible album "Amused to death" by Roger Waters. A masterpiece.
Jeff's the only reason I've kept that album! Jeff's playing is scary, emotional and powerful - just the best thing on the whole album.
TRUTH is a killer album.
It would great if you would rank the albums of John McLaughlin including his Shakti and Mahavishnu albums. Such a broad discography--it would be quite a challenge. Brilliant guy.

Love Blow by blow. Learned a lot about phrasing by trying to play Since we ended as lovers and Goodbye pork pie hat.
However the album I played to death was Wired. Loved the energy ... and the ensemble playing is breath taking.
There and Back is another most played album . Star cycle still gives me goosebumps.
If you haven’t heard it Elegy for Dunkirk is one the best tunes he’s recorded in 20 years. So full of heart felt emotion . Singing via his guitar is his super power.
Will never get tired of Blow by Blow or Wired .....classics
I had *Flash* and LOVE "Gets Us All In The End" which blows-away everything else on the album, including the classic "People Get Ready." Jimmy Hall's vocals were *amazing* and Jeff Beck's guitar scorched the Earth!!

Great one Pete. I see where you come from but I really dig loudhailer. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea but I just love the way Jeff went for a new direction. But we agree on the number one... truth is just incredible. One of my all time favourite albums. And that's really a call for a Tommy Bolin ranking.

Another very fun video, Pete; One of the GREAT guitar players ever, Jeff Beck is a bit easier because there is a disparity between his top shelf records and some others that don't quite hit the mark, fun stuff, anyhoo, my list...1) Blow by Blow 2) There and Back 3) Wired 4) Guitar Shop 5) Crazy Legs 6) Truth 7) Beck-Ola 8) Jeff Beck 9) Who Else; after that it starts to drop off for me rather precipitously, lol.
Love your channel. A song that should get an honorable mention is "Hello Jeff" from Stanley Clarke's 1975 "Journey To Love" album.
the fact the Jeff Beck has changed and evolved with each release is truly amazing. He could do what Dizzie Gillespie and Eric Clapton did and just repeat the same album 20 times. Yes some of it is not as great as the rest but he is moving forward.
Yep, Wired is the album I would take on a desert island ... and blow by blow and guitar shop and rough and ready and you had it comming (for nadia alone) .... christ, what a player.
I think the band he had with Bob Tench and Cozy Powell was underapreciated. Those were a couple of really good records.
I was like you with some of Beck’s newer albums. There is one song off Loud Hailer called Pull It and I love the song but it’s way to short. I finally got to see Jeff Beck live when he was touring with ZZ Top. Jeff Beck was amazing and later came back out to do the song 16 tons with ZZ Top. The one thing about Beck is he was never afraid of trying something new and different and that’s what makes him stand out over so many others. As far as covers of song go his cover of the Beatles, A Day In The Life is my favorite.
Good ranking! One track that moved Flash up in my book is You Know, We Know. For some reason I'd passed it by for years until I left it playing in the car. It's so powerful and majestic. Beck/Hymas was an incredible partnership. My top 2 are Beck Ola and Wired, though my "go to" album is There and Back. It just gives that well rounded, polished, symphonic Hammer and Hymas hit. There is a little filler in there, but Star Cycle, El Becko, The Pump and Space Boogie are that last jazz rock hurrah for Beck and they get me everytime.
I love all of Jeff Becks stuff. The recent stuff is great for me. It took a while for me to get into the techno albums but I love it all.

Jeff Beck Group 1972 has GOING DOWN on it. Saw Jeff and SRV play it together in an encore COBO HALL 1989. Gotta mention Going Down, Pete.
yeah, it's great but the song has been done to death by everybody. It's like the ultimate 'jam' song for every all-star occasion. I'm kinda over it and would rather hear other tunes from that album.

Beck is hard to rank because there were so many phases of his career. How can you really rank Truth vs. Blow by Blow? One is hard rock and the other is jazz rock and both were brilliant. Beck can use a whammy bar to sustain and stretch a note better than anyone. As you can tell, I love Jeff Beck
Better than anyone else...... with the possible exception of Dave Gilmour.
I'd say Robin Trower is the supreme note bender. He can do more with one string than Steve Van shredding with six.

Jeff wasn't pleased at how it turned out ... he says that it sounded too sterile and polished (or words to that effect).
Though I can't put it above Wired, this is truly a masterpiece. I really have to wonder about people who put this album down the list.
Then again, a lot of people just *need* singing. That's just why they listen to music, not for the music.
But most of all, people don't have the attention span for long instrumental works, no matter how legendary.
I don't like it as much as "Blow by Blow" or "Wired" but only by the narrowest of margins. I think "The Final Peace" is one of the loveliest, most haunting songs the Guv'nor ever recorded.
My fave - I would actually put it above Wired.
One of the best concerts I ever attended was Stevie Ray Vaughan opening up for Jeff Beck in Dayton Ohio. Stevie joined Jeff towards the end of his set for a full on guitar battle. It was pretty sweet.
Same tour for me in the Sam Houston Colliseum in Houston TX. Sadly, alot of people left when SRV finished his set.

Jeff Notes: Jeff Beck with Jan Hammer Group Live is an amazing Live album. It has some songs from Like Children (Hammer & Jerry Goodman) which is very underrated fusion record from 1974. Live at Ronnie Scott's is a great DVD!
I don't think I've ever heard anyone recommend any other albums besides Wired and Blow by Blow as a starting point for JB. With that being considered, I gotta admit I'm a bit surprised that those weren't Pete's top two. I really should get on with it, and begin becoming more familiar with rest of his catalogue. Anything he's done I'm sure is at least relatively amazing.
As for Like Children, I consider that to be an all-time favorite. I've got two used copies I later found on vinyl. (Trying to remember whether I already had one and got it signed when I met Jerry Goodman... Not sure, cuz my stuff's in storage right now. 🤔) When I asked Jerry if it would ever get released on CD (this would've been sometime around '02 or '03), he said he suspected that the original tapes were lost, being that the record label never got back to him and Jan when they inquired about it. Fortunately, it turns out he was wrong, seeing that it did finally get released on CD a few years ago. *whew*
I was about 16 or 17 when I first heard that record, and it was a game-changer for me as a musician. Found out that this keyboardist I do wedding gigs with is familiar with the album...so, we've been talking about maybe performing it live sometime!! (I play guitar.)

I may be in the minority, but I would have ranked Emotion and Commotion higher. I love his guitar sound with strings. Also, I like both Joss Stone and Imelda May on vocals. Thanks for delving into the Beck catalog.

Though I must say I love Rough and Ready. Never a Rod Stewart fan. He ruins those early albums for me. But hey, if you love him, that’s totally cool! There’s no right or wrong here.
I never understood the fandom for Rod Stewart. He sounds drunk when he's singing. His hit "Forever Young" is so agonizing to my ears.

Rod is vocal marmite. His very early solo albums are great. I, like most real music fans, couldn’t listen to the stuff he put out in the 80’s.
However I went to see him play the opening concert for a 13,000 seat concert hall in my city. I genuinely have rarely enjoyed an evening of music so much. He created a house party in that huge space. My partner and I were in tears for much of the second half where he played songs form our youth.
He sang magnificently.
No one can take away from him that he has possibly the most identifiable voice in music. You can’t have that level of sustained success if there isn’t real talent there.
But .... if marmite makes you gag 🤡

I first heard Jeff Beck Wired on a boat in the Caribbean in the 1980s. My favorite is You Had It Coming from 2001. I also love Wired and Blow by Blow.

You Had It Coming is great on so many levels. First I love the consistency of the album, the songs fit together so perfectly, nothing sounds out of place. The singer he hired for Dirty Mind and Rollin and Tumblin sounds smoking hot. And his embrace of evolving technology shows he is not afraid to change with the times like so many other artists who tend to sound like a stale dated product of their times as the decades roll on. Highly underrated album IMO but the music seems to get used as background music for many advertisements which is a shame as I've never heard any of it's songs played in their entirety on the radio.

I pretty much agree with your ranking. Wired is the first album of his I heard, it will always be special to me. He is my favorite guitarist....love that tone! I know you don't list live albums but for those that don't know of it his tribute album to Les Paul is pretty cool. Some nice guest stars. It was filmed and is available on DVD. Maybe you could do The Yardbirds as a followup. To me they very influential.

Jeff Beck is quite possibly the world's greatest living guitar player, right up there with Bill Frisell.
June 24 2020 . Happy B Day Jeff Beck ! 76 years young and STILL at the top of his game. 1st major concert I saw was a Dick Clark Cavalcade of Stars show. 1966 . The Yardbirds featuring J B . And a new 2nd guitarist , unknown to most. JIMMY PAGE. Tickets were $5 ??? . There ya go.

Even for Jeff Beck fans, there are still two kinds of listeners - those who are there for the notes and the playing, and those that need singing. Going over 5 minutes without a lyric is hard for the attention span of the latter. The former group sits in awe of Scatterbrain. And Echoes by Floyd. The latter group considers that and all "prog" to be torture.
(Me? As to the prog period up through There and Back - those albums are better than sex.)

If you have not seen it yet, you must watch Still on the Run, a Jeff Beck documentary. It is on Showtime. They are offering a free 30-day trial, which is how I saw it. I've seen it three times already. There was a good story that Billy Gibbons told on Howard Stern years ago about when Moving Sidewalks toured with Hendrix. Billy said that Jimi turned him on to the Jeff Beck Truth album while at the hotel.

I played the Hell out of Wired, Beck, Bogert, and Appice, Truth, Jeff Beck Live With The Jan Hammer Group (1977), and The Jan Hammer Group - Melodies (1977), all 5 Albums on 8-Track Tape Cartridges and Now I have all 5 on CD Format, so I do not wear the 8-Tracks Out! The "orange album" in my opinion is likely the best guitar record in history. So underrated. I have never heard anybody 50 years later who can play the licks and rhythms on this LP: Highways; Going Down.....

Absolutely the guitar king of his use of the whammy bar. the tremolo & phrasing those sounds from a strat are legendary Beck.
I met Carmine back in 2010. He pronounces it "a piece."

Pete, this is in my opinion one of your best rankings. I'd shuffle a few around, but like you say, they're SO close, it could easy change with the weather, or what I had for breakfast that morning. The only disappointment I have is you seemed to exclude mentioning some of his greatest songs along with the album they appear on. Such as "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" on Blow by Blow, a slow song with SO much feeling, a huge favorite in concert. And "Going Down" on Jeff Beck Group, Bobby Tench's vocals are amazing, Jeff's guitar is on fire, Max's keys and Cozy's drums just keep it thumpin'. Both of them rank among my favorite songs of all-time favorite songs by ANYONE. The only other comment I have is that you could have EASILY made one more exception for the Live at Ronnie Scott's album. Tal's bass and Vinnie's drumming on it are legendary, and Jeff's playing seems inspired to a whole new level by them. "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and instrumental Beatle cover "A Day in the Life" are simply fantastic. And "Rollin' & Tumblin'" with Imogen Heap also, Jeff makes his guitar sound like a freaking blues harp. So friggin' cool!
I must’ve played Goin’ Down a couple thousand times over the years. Still get goosebumps from some of those wild guitar runs near the end of the song!
Thanks Pete. Jeff Beck is my favorite guitar player. A true genius. I would have had Emotion and Commotion higher and Flash much lower, but good ranking over all. My top 3 - Truth, Wired and Blow by Blow. I would have had There and Back at 4 and Beck-ola at 5. Great albums

2 - Wired - Exceptional album. Not a bad moment on this.
3 - Beck, Bogert & Appice - Oh what could have been....this and the live album from Japan is some of the most powerful music I have heard.
4 - Blow By Blow - Only slightly behind Wired...but it is VERY close.
5 - There and Back - A brilliant album. Simon Phillips is insane. Space Boogie alone is worth admission.
6 - Rough and Ready - Tremendous album. Still sounds amazing.
7 - Beck-Ola - I need to revisit this again...probably too far down the list..

I had heard of Jeff Beck as I got serious about rock and roll in 1971-1972. I had B,B & A, but it didn't click for me.
What DID click in April 1977 was Jeff Beck live with the Jan Hammer group!
I had missed that 1976 tour the year before with Mahavishnu orch- God that was one tour I wish I could go back and see!
Still, here was this scorching live album which set the tone for both Jan Hammer and Jeff- been following both solidly for 43 years, now.
