Ali practiced what he preached, please don't put Bruce in the same vain as Ali. Ali fought nemerous world champions, even chuck Morris fought numerous world champions, he was a world champion. Bruce didn't fight any champions, only a couple traditional martial artists and a stunt man. Great man though, I respect him alot. But someone else from the 70s and 80s who doesn't get a mention is Benny the jet. Now he was a real fighter, who also had traditional martial art background, he became a world champion in kickboxing. He had one of the best fight scenes ever. I can't remember which movie it was, but it was against Jackie chan. Benny the jet doesn't get the respect he deserves.

It's easy for us to say in hindsight, but in the moment the issue is how deceptively strong he was.
Bruce didn't have the build of most professional fighters-- he lacked bulk, and as a result most people assumed that his attacks were fast and flashy but had no real power. A lot of sport karate competitors fall under this category since the goal is to make contact rather than defend yourself from an aggressor.

But show me a real contest or fight either of them were in. I fell for the hype as a kid, i even took up karate influenced by them in the 80’s. I think theres one grainy film of bruce in a fight. They were actors as much as martial artists. And their styles have been pushed aside in mma. The mystique and aura of karate, kung fu, kick boxing is shattered. MMA is where you really see what works. Could Bruce have competed in mma? Nope but you have to credit him as being an early initiator of different fighting styles.

@@DC-wp6oj Hey D C...don't know you, but I hope you are making it through 2020 as good as you can. I get what you are saying, but I don't think your response was a direct response to the initial comment or question so that's where my confusion came in. Hopefully you didn't take it as disrespectful at all. I know there's a ton of comments on here that tout Bruce as being able to whoop anyone's tail, but this post that you are replying to isn't saying that at all. He's simply saying that if you do like both Bruce and Van Damme for whatever reason that there are few people who costarred and knew both in a personal way like Bolo did hearing from someone like that about both of them would probably be interesting. It's always more interesting to hear from someone who actually knows someone and not from tape or reading about them...….if i wanted to know what you are like or if you wanted to know what I was like and we didn't know each other than the next best thing to learn about the person is to hear it from someone who actually knew them and I haven't looked it up, but there are probably very few people that had that kind of personal relationship with both Bruce and Van Damme so hearing from him would be interesting. I think that's all the initial poster was saying. Me personally if i wanted to jump into the whole topic of what you are talking about......I actually don't do that.........not because it's not an interesting subject about how great was this guy compared to this other guy, but because there's never going to be any real answer and the only people who I think can really have a pretty decent opinion on that would be someone who fought against both guys that you are debating about. I would rather change the question to if they had a tournament of the best martial artists back in the 1970's when Bruce was still alive and they put it on similar to the UFC but it was with weight classes and not changing anything else..........everyone trains the same.......eats the same........studies the same martial art then how does Bruce fair in that tournament. It sounded like he was rapidly getting to the point of MMA by combining different things from different Martial Arts..........he was fast.......we can see that.....almost everyone who talks about him says he was incredibly strong especially for his size. I think that's more interesting than the question of how he would fair against todays MMA top guys because then Bruce wouldn't have all the advancements in training and nutrition and just the advancement in thinking about mixing grappling with striking like everyone does now. Not sure if Bruce could take a punch or how he would react if he ended up in one of those fights where you are taken to your limits, but I personally would've like to see it.......it does appear that he is one of the rare supremely gifted people who has both speed and power. 99.9 percent of people don't have that combo like he apparently did. Even without seeing it I can still love all the movie stuff....he was one of the rare guys in that world too. The guys who bigger than life and pop off that screen.........very similar to Clint Eastwood in those Westerns back in the day. Watch out now........i'm going to start groaning and moaning about how they don't make them like that anymore!!!! See ya..........have a good one!!!!

Bruce was known to be overconfident, cocky if you may say, and liked to provoke people. Was he great? Of course, but was his personality likable? That was quite debatable. Bruce Lee was probably a very kind man as some point in his life, as evidenced by his actions of taking care of people.
But there was also a time when he was considered brash, and possibly arrogant, around the time he decided to bring Gung-Fu to the western world. A lot of that has been documented.
He did an interview with Black Belt magazine about Gung-Fu vs Karate. (Back then it was Gung-Fu, not Kung-Fu). Kempo or Kenpo was the big name in Karate along with some Shotokan. I don't remember if Lee had developed JKD at the time. He told Black Belt something like "The best Karate man in the world - if he's any good - would last maybe 15 seconds with me" and on my desk I have a little grave that says "Here lies Karate". A picture of it appeared in Black Belt. He constantly compared the fluidity and economy of movement of JKD to the almost static robotic movements of Karate. He was a great "pilot" flying a more maneuverable "plane". A tortured metaphor but true.
Depending on perspective, he was arrogant to a fault, or brutally honest in his belief. I for one, believed him. Today, the average Joe never hears the word "Karate" but instead Tae Kwon Do, so maybe he was partially right.
He used to demo the power of the "1" punch" or inch-punch. He was have somebody strike at him and he'd strike back (finger taps on the forehead) and *then* block the punch while withdrawing his fist - the way of the intercepting fist. He'd have somebody hold their hand out palm up with a coin in it. "When I move, close your hand before I can grab it". NObody ever could. Once in a while he'd let somebody close their hand, but when they opened it he'd changed the coin. The dude was fast. More powerful than thunder, maybe faster than lightning.
There may be faster practitioners out there, there always is- eventually. But nobody quite as good and as charismatic as Bruce. I'll say that I saw some of that in Brandon Lee. Another tragic loss.

so that makes at least two impromptu challenge matches on the enter the dragon set. he also had a match with samo hung after they filmed the opening shot of them fighting in the black kempo gloves and black underwear. the rest of that day was shooting some jim kelly scenes and they didn't need bruce, and samo was only in that one scene. so after the crew moved on, samo basically said "we're here, we've got gear on. you wanna go?". in interviews since then, Samo has admitted it was over before he knew it started, and he never even saw the hit coming. bruce asked if he was ready, he said yes, and then woke up on the floor, with bruce standing over him smiling and asking "How was that?". Samo gave a thumbs up and said "Good! VERY GOOD!".

Thanks you Bruce was a inspiration growing up., I'm going to start practicing Kung Fu again. Some of the most loyal, truthful, patient, and disciplined people I've met were Sendai, or teachers. They never lie and give credit where it's due.
