  • Paul Stamets, visionary mycologist extraordinaire, has discovered several new species of mushrooms and pioneers countless techniques in the field of edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation. He has recently achieved remarkable results cleaning up dangerous toxins using “fungal bioremediation” and radically improving soil fertility with mushrooms.
This speech was given at the 2003 Bioneers National Conference.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.
For more information on Bioneers, please visit www.bioneers.org and stay in touch via Facebook ( / bioneers.org ) and Twitter ( / bioneers .

Wow! This is life-changing, exciting information. Outstanding. It makes me want to become a mycologist. Thank you Paul for your incredible contributions to our health and to our safety. Discoveries like this keep me from losing hope. Nature has answers. We just have to have people open minded and smart enough to put the puzzle together. It's funny that when you look at mushrooms out in nature often our first reaction is to be turned off by their appearance. Who knew they were doing so many important things? I guess you can't judge a book by its cover as they say. Just be careful not to pick the wrong ones and eat them!

I live in a very upside down world. A world that ignores the obvious genius of this video and rewards inane pop culture.

Not only do we need the mushroom species, but we need to preserve THEIR food source(s). And dang, we all know that the whole mycelial biosphere speaks to itseself. It's not like one thing can take off without the WHOLE thing . . . it's not too late. That's the good news. Since the whole biosphere is also contained in any tiny piece, we're all OK.

Someone please give me a good argument why this idea I just had is only paranoia. Hearing and seeing the mushroom that attracted the ant, infected the colony, and committed genocide, I get the eerie feeling we might be being tricked the same way. The ants love the narcotic. We love the psychedelic. The ants immediately share the mycelium. We immediately share the mushroom. The ants get played because the mushroom decides so. The humans get played because the mushroom decides so. Why do we trust this thing? I suppose there's not a concrete reason to trust anything and we are just going off our intuition. And as I subscribe to the stoned ape theory, I suppose if something gifts you life you ought to honor it. Never mind I answered my own question. I think the stoned ape theory is a pretty good singular piece of "evidence", if you believe in it, that this is a remarkably net positive symbiotic relationship. In fact the only positive things come to mind when I think about the effects mushrooms have on us and the world, so mistrust fits the definition for paranoia, even if there's a slim chance it is warranted... but what if Ive already been hijacked and thats what the mushroom wants me to think!?!?! Jk have a good life friends.

    • @Francesco-cj3oi
      @Francesco-cj3oi 4 года назад +2

Although there are similar patterns accross every scale of the universe, you can't expect the same effect to happen on an ant and a human being, i think it's too big of a difference in size and complexity.
When we take mushrooms we take like what, a few grams? That's enough for our organism to metabolize and not be dangerous, I think

The zen question is, if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it does it make a noise? it is a word pun playing on the subjetivenes of words, and the fact that our words for noise are subjective to the being hearing the noise, therefore no the tree does not make a noise as noise is subjective

Does anyone know if there has been any practical application of his work on using fungi as attractants and for controlling insect pests. I can't find any published papers . only his patents which relate mainly to social insects. I work in horticulture and obviously bioinsecticides, some of them fungi, are commonly used now but I have not heard of any that use fungi as an attractant. I would be interested to know more about it.

Hey, soldier fly farming helps to break down human waste, if we all started a small bin for that it could start up a chain for decomposition and get everything rocking and rolling

The correct question, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, DOES IT MAKE A SOUND?" Paul a genius but he wrongly states, "if humans could not carry fire we would not have survived.".

Really..I thought the tree falling was a given.
If we see tiny wisps of smoke about Pauls hat we're
sure to know what's going on..

@Tracy Shepherd I don't think you have any idea what I am even asking. Nor do I think this would illicit 3 irrelevant responses.
