Warning! It's dangerous to blindly jump into the production of flash powders. Read deeply into many sources before attempting to mix any flash recipes! I am not an expert, this video and description is for reference only. It may contain errors and should not be used as a solid guide.
Here I am comparing different flash powders inside (mostly) M80 style salute tubes, with 1/3" hot glue plugs. Note: hot glue plugs are not recommended for ground salutes, as they can become projectiles.
All ground salutes were measured at a distance of 60 feet using the Meterk Digital Sound Level Meter
Although it is easy to make your own, the tubes and fuse use were sourced from cannonfuse.com for constancy.

3 grams kno3 Flash: 50% kno3 / 30% Al (5 micron powder) / 20% Sulf, 107.5db

3.1 grams Zinc Flash: 75% Zinc / 25% Sulf, 98.2db

3 grams #11 Flash: 64% KCIO4 / 23% Al (dark Indian) / 13% Sulf, 108.2db

1" Aerial (2.5 grams BP lift) 7~grams # 5 Flash: 50% kno3 / 30% Sulf / 20% Al (5 micron powder), 104.4db
Conclusion
Black Powder
Still rings the ears at 15~feet, but feels safe for the back yard if clay/plaster plugs are used.
Zinc
Was only as loud as BP, but could make a fun green aerial salutes.

When used with 5 micron aluminum powder provides a deep, bright report.

With Indian dark aluminum dust sounded sharp, and did not appear to give off much (if any) light.
(WARNING! #11 is no joke! and can remove fingers with as little as 1 gram... STAY SAFE!)
I light and throw a few of these in the video. I will no longer be doing that! If you do an image search for "m80 vs hand", you will understand why it's a BAD idea!
Hi, I do have question if you would, for the #11 kclo4/Al/S. Can you tell us how reactive it is to friction over the usual kclo4/Al mix?

But there is some fun to that.
I ALWAYS make sure my process is not causing me to get flash on the fuse. I also ALWAYS WIPE MY FUSE OFF IF EVEN ON MY TSHIRT BEFORE LIGHTING IT EVEN THOUGH I KNOW FOR SURE MY FUSE HAS NO FLASH ON IT. High quality fuse, no flash leaked onto it? Chucc city.😂🤣😂. The glue filling my plugs also seem to add about 2 extra seconds to the fuse time
Finally someone that is proficient in making an original m-80 good work,I even wax dip mine like the mil spec was done also seals and waterproofs them,they will keep forever like that
I've been wondering if this was possible, I have tried dipping them in a lacquer to waterproof them but its messy and smells.
Wax doesn't smell and probably dries fairly quick too.
You'd be surprised how loud black powder can be when confined properly
quick question I just received my perchlorate and I still need aluminum powder I wanted german dark but they are sold out do you think aluminum indian blackhead will work fine?

I always found 70/30 potassium perch and small micron AL works great
Im working with Potassium Perchlorate High Purity and Atomized aluminum 3 micron and it punches!

You should really use potassium perchlorate. Not nitrate. There should literally be nothing left of the M80 casing when mixed properly

@@rickjwilliams I don't have a RUclips channel. That's probably why you see no demos. I'm really a little too old, and don't believe it's the smartest thing to do in the states these days. But I will tell you in the late 60s early 70s you could order whatever you wanted through the mail. Perchlorate, Aluminum, and Sulfur were the best results we got. Literally confetti was all that was left of an M80. Never got very good results from Potassium Nitrate. Although I'm sure anything is possible. Have fun. But I'll warn you, When Flash powder bites you, You'll know it.
@@stephenflowers8516 You are correct sir, the proper ratio of Perchlorate and Dark German AL NO sulfur yields insane results. Been making my own for years. It literally vaporizes the tubes into microscopic confetti. and I use heavy wall tubes, paper plugs reinforced with wood glue. note: Perchlorate is also more stable than Nitrate ,,, Nitrate is more opt to bite you in the ass ;)

How did you mix your zinc and sulfur? I haven't worked with such a mixture in years, but when I did I had trouble getting an intimate enough mixture of them even to sustain an even burn. I was looking at it to be a wheel driver, given its history in amateur rocketry. If I recall correctly, a 2:1 weight mixture is stoichiometric.
You guys.... u dont leave it 1/3 empty for "oxygen," it's so the powder is nice and loose helping the flame spread through the mixture faster than if its compressed .. lol

How would you rate 70% potassium perchlorate 30%Indian blackhead dark aluminum. That's what I use.
Two effects occur with flash powder, the first is rapid burning, the second is the metal vapor burning in the air.

You should try a 7mm rem mag.
Does then sulfer give it somewhat of a yellow flash.
Can you clarify what you saying it AL powder and AL dust. Mesh difference?
AL dust refers to the aluminum being so fine it can go airbourne extremely easily.

In my 2nd test video (link in the description) I compared these and a few more to a 10mm Glock 20. Most of the m80s beat my target ammo. My defensive ammo was about 3db louder.
All I got say is m80 make 9mm sound like a bitch lol 🤷🏽♂️
Back when I did this kind of thing I always found black powder you had to leave a third empty for oxygen.
Total BS dude. It's not for oxygen, it's for expansion. Giving the composition time to expand and build pressure, then rupturing the tube for a "possibly" louder report!

Ok so my main question is. (I use perchlorate and Indian dark aluminum. Micron 2. There really loud.. BUT how do I get them to thump my chest. I really like that feeling.vs high pitch loud.

This experiment is useless - no control. You have different amounts of powder and different casings. How in the hell is one able to make a comparison with this?? Did you eat too many lead paint chips as a kid??
