I have so enjoyed watching several of your videos this evening. My husband and I lived in Ajijic on Lake Chapala for two years. Though we loved it, we missed our family and returned to the US. Now I'm pining away to get back to Mexico.
@@gg6ft7 I'd like a map of the cities WITH the $/city and whether absolutely need Spanish or not. That's not difficult AND she's the one doing the video.

I might want to see some videos that focus on small towns or focus on areas in the mountains...but I get the impression you will slam me for asking for that.
@@beehive5835 Slam you for what? I think you have me mixed up with someone else's question here? All I asked was about rentals in PV and Mazatlan since she went to both and rented. Also eateries. Everyone does have different wants that they would like I agree and should ask.
San Miguel is not necessarily more expensive. I rent a new studio apartment in a nice neighborhood including cable TV & internet for $ 275.00 monthly. I have lived in Ensenada, Guanajato, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel, over the last 5 years. Each area has its good & bad, the cost of living is about the same in each one of these towns, you need to be there to find bargains, don’t believe everything you read. Get to know a few locals before making a long term commitment. Paul
This is a wonderful video. Just as a head's up, Lake Chapala is surrounded by big fruit corps like Dole and Driscolls. They bought out the local farmers and put in monocrops. The pollution of the ground water is so severe that in a nearby village, 60% of the children are in liver failure. In addition, it's 5000+ high, which doesn't work for some people. We lived their for several months, but the altitude plus the hideous traffic were too much for us.
Thanks for sharing your insights on Mexico. I could argue all day about which regions and cities of Mexico are the best. I agree 100% with you about Merida. We had an amazing(and sweltering) two weeks there in 2019 - the music scene (cumbia and salsa) is the best - especially if, like me, you like to dance at happy hour (cantinas) rather than late night. I do not agree about Sayulita - I think I commented about this before - you might not like it in a normal high season. There are too many obnoxious northerners there and the water is suspiciously murky (as it is in Puerto Vallarta). In contrast, the water along the Oaxacan coast is beautiful. I am surprised you haven't included Puerto Escondido or Zipolite on your list. That coast is my perfect area: warm water, mountains, authentic food and culture, international travelers and even hipsters. Finally, every time you mention the Copper Canyon I want to go (and I will, when you know what is controlled). If you liked Chihuahua - you should come to British Columbia in the summer. Endless wilderness - rainforest, desert, canyons, alpine = and lots of space.
I LOVE Puerto Escondido, but it feels so remote. I dunno, for me it's a great place to vacation, but amenities-wise, it is lacking what most of the other places on this list have that make it feel like somewhere I could live for a while. I can totally understand your sentiments on Sayulita. I'm sort of afraid to go back in case my initial trip there is spoiled in my mind haha, but it was my first real trip of the year and it just felt like utter paradise, and of course, it was almost dead - there were hardly any tourists there at all, so I would probably only go back to live there for a few months during the low season. Also - YES, get yourself to Copper Canyon. It's amazing.
Love your videos! Hoping to move with my husband and child to Mexico City in maybe six years! Anyways, if you’ve never been to Tepoztlan, you should go! Not sure it is “livable” but it’s def one of the most magical places I have been to in Mexico.
Mexico city is the worst place you can go live when you have children. My aunt lives in MC and tells me all the time about how there always trying to kidnap kids. The crime rate is sooooo high
Another great video! I would say that Guanajuato City is not where the violence is. Most of that is in cities to the south in Guanajuato State like Irapuato and Celaya. They are both on major highways the cartels use. But the news always just says Guanajuato so the city gets some of that blowback. Many affluent Mexican families send their kids to the prestigious liberal arts University of Guanajuato, so it tends to be well policed. Personally, I would rather live in Guanajuato City for affordability and liveliness and take the bus to SMA an hour away for weekends and day trips. Have a great 2021!.
@@nasirb3914 well... People tend to say that bad things just happen to the people in bad steps. But the truth is that in Mexico it is a matter of luck. You can live here years and hopefully never happens to you in years. Or just arrive in a short trip and get a bad experience. The reality is that Guanajuato in general is not a safe place right now. It is not to alarm but just lets face reality and be counscious that's all. It's sad and besides covid is out of control 😔

I really don’t know why Xalapa isn’t talked about more. It may be that it’s wetter than the rest of Mexico, but that makes it so green. And the college town vibe is nice.
Very informative. Interesting how you included Chihuahua. The copper canyon area is a gem location that a surprising number of people still don't know about. I am also enamored with "Loreto" on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Cal. Sur. Have you reviewed that location in addition to La Paz?
Most towns in Mexico are candidates for your list Safety being a concern I don’t drive the mainland anymore, although I did for 13 consecutive winters and never had a problem ,1996 to 2009. Too many people, too many roads. Last 11 years I’ve been driving to Baja, only one road, very safe, I can get from Palm Springs to the bottom in two days, single driver, two drivers can make it in one day. I usually slow down once in Baja and have taken as long as a month to get to my final destination, on the sea of Cortez, todo santos is just a little get-a-way once in a while, I tried todo santos, just doesn’t work for me long term It’s on the pacific Can’t swim, you would die, can’t launch a boat either ….
I live in Guanajato, have lived here for over two years, it is just as safe as most of Mexico. I have traveled throughout Mexico for many years, lived in Puerto Vallarta, Punta Banda, etc. I have also lived in San Miguel. Guanajato is more authentic Mexico, the people here are very friendly. I have a friend who recently rented an almost new studio apartment, bedroom upstairs, includes Wifi & Cable, safe street parking on a dead end street for $ 275.00. You can’t find a better deal in Guanajato. The tourists here are mostly from Mexico. There is so much mis information out there, I could write a book. Paul Fine
Hi, I only just saw this. Not sure if you've ever been to Zihuatenejo, on the Pacific Coast? Definitely one to check out. I loved it there but not on the days when the cruise ships were in town 😉 Other places which are really beautiful are Campeche and Bacalar, both in the Yucatan. If, like me, you are into archaeology, visit the dmazing Calakmul biosphere, accessible from Chetumal or Campeche. And, of course, Palenque is stunning. As is Chiapas and it's jewel in the crown- San Cristobal. Chetumal, on the border with Belize, is great to visit for carnival. There's a stunning beach town just to the South called Calderitas. You could combine it with a trip to Belize, which is great and a totally different vibe to Mexico. More like Jamaica!! Also, check out the Colonial town of Morelia; really pretty!
For us folks who work online, maybe talking about the dsl and wifi internet speeds, costs and availability in these areas would be helpful. Im seriously considering Mexico to relocate to. @@laura-bronner You couldn't get me to live in San Miguel... But the small towns around it are becoming increasingly popular with, Italians, Americans and Canadians.
I'm new here, but if you haven't gone to Aguascalientes, it's very underrated. The weather is perfect. According to my Google search, it's one of the major cities with the lowest cost of living. It was clean. The museums were amazing.
Yep, I'd call it the merida of central mexico. Very calm, very safe, very clean, cheap, both have a bit over a million population so not big but not small, unlike merida aguascalientes is not burning hot, but it doesn't have a nearby beach either. Both are fantastic cities for calm life here in Mexico.
I visited Chihuahua in November 2021. Amazing people, good food and nice city. I stayed in a hotel that had its own car garage for $55. I replaced all four tires with a Mexican brand before driving back to South Dakota.
It is the first time I see one of your videos and I loved it! When you visit Querétaro and want to learn about real estate here, I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
I liked it there, but didn't totally love it. It felt more isolated than some of these other places on the list so I probably wouldn't want to move there long term, but it's a beautiful place to visit and a great base for exploring more of Chiapas.
I discovered Teziutlan, Puebla. It’s a small city with all the amenities, but feels town like and is greeeeen. In the middle of a rainforest and 1.5 hours away from Puebla, Xalapa and the beach
Would be interested in knowing what median income per month you would think gives you a very nice number of options in terms of affordability. Like your vid.
One of the things you have to consider in your more popular choices especially on the beaches is that you may be basing your choices on a much less crowded Mexico than is normal. In the future, as Covid subsides, these places may not look as appealing.
...your opinion, your likes and dislikes, nevertheless great info. Love your enthusiasm for MX and it’s food, folklore and beauty. You are very lovely...my two cents of opinion, beach wise, visit Ensenada. City wise try Tepoztlán, Morelos. Keep up your journey. Hopefully soon you will find your place to live. Saludos desde Santa Clara,Ca.
I liked Ensenada, but I didn't *love* it. The food there is incredible and being so close to the wine region is awesome, but I found the port not the nicest to look at and I didn't really love the beach there very much (granted I visited during a very cloudy cold winter, so I definitely need to revisit in better weather). I also love Tepoztlan, but haven't had a chance to get to Morelos- it's a place I keep hearing so much about!
I know these towns and don't like Sayulita due to overcrowding, but I love the overall area. It's actually often cheaper in Puerto Vallarta - I always have my car for day trips.
Hi, love your videos! Question i have is Puerto Vallarta expensive like rent and then food, eateries and then what's the difference between Mazatlan and PV? Thank you 😎
Great information on good places to visit or live in Mexico. I’m currently slow traveling in Mexico right now. I totally get your “vibe” on Chapala though, I thought the same thing,
I’m looking at moving to Mexico in late 2021 with my dog and in the process of getting my temp or hopefully perm visa so I can open an office there and hire sales reps for my US company. Love your videos, so helpful but made me more confused as to where to move. LOL.
I LOVED Muleje, (on the Baja, by Bajia Concepcion). I traveled Mexico quite a bit and another place I lived for a few months was Isla Mujeres, (may not be as small town sweet as it was in the 90's when I lived there. Talk about fun!..Large Palapa by the beach/dancing and then run and jump into the ocean when you get too hot dancing the salsa, (margaritas pair well with Salsa dancing).
Where are you wrong; where are you right? My opinion is that Sayulita is overrated, because there's no parking for my big SUV and it is so crowded there and overpriced, too. Also, Mazatlan is okay, but often overrun with Mexican vacationers. KNOW YOU, LAURA, you'd like LOVE Huatulco - please spend some time there, because I am POSITIVE YOU"LL LOVE IT, knowing YOU!!!!
We want cool temps so we are thinking about Queretero or Puebla, Morelia, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, or #1 San Cristobal de las Casas. We speak Spanish and have lived abroad before. No love for Puebla ?
I just discovered your channel and I really enjoy it! Especially videos like this. I'm not considering moving to Mexico (yet) but would like to escape the US for 7-10 days if I can during the winter. I live in a cold area of the US. How do I tell if a place in Mexico is very restricted due to Covid or very open? I know there is a Green, Yellow, Red color codes but that seems to change. I'd hate to fly somewhere, only for it to be shutdown. I guess that's the risk on a short trip.
Chihuahua is a good choice. The capital is not too big and not too small, it's just about right. It has lots of historic places to visit and the state has plenty of other cities to visit each with its own northern charm, even Ciudad Juarez with all its bad press is a surprising city with lots of history and plenty of good people and great food. There is something about adversity that gives character to people. Let me know if you ever come this way, I'll compile my list of favorite places to visit.
Well said, I couldn’t agree more. I’m hoping to explore a whole lot more of Chihuahua later this year so I’ll definitely let you know if I head up that way!

Here's an interesting fact about Mexico: Most people knows Mexico is a tropical country with lot of beaches and sunshine. However, almost nobody knows that some parts of Mexico get snowfalls during wintertime!!!
What is the deal with Chihuahua??? The airbnb's are dirt cheap! 300 bucks for a 3 bedroom remodeled apartment with a pool! What the hell is the catch? Is there maybe more than one Chihuahua in Mexico?
Your videos are charming and informative! I fell in love with CDMX on two visits there, but also long to visit Oaxaca, Puebla, Mérida, and now....Sayulita! My brother in law secretly wants to be a beach bum (he’s a successful contractor) so I’d live to take him to PV then Sayulita.
I was thoroughly enjoying your show until this one, you don’t enjoy expats in Mexico got it. As I’m an Expat, I will unfollow and find another programmer who is more ‘’international’ in their view points. Very small minded and I hope you find balance in your future. Move to Cali it’s about as international as you can get.
How long are you visiting each place? Im wondering what's a good estimate of time it takes to determine if you like a place enough to want to live there.
That's a good question - most of the places on this list I've been to on average for about a month in total (so maybe a week the first time and then two weeks and then a return trip for a week, others I've spent whole months straight there). There are two or three on the list that I instantly fell in love with and left after only 10 days but wished I had more time there (like the entire state of Chihuahua!). It's also worth noting that when I say "places to live" I don't mean my "forever home" sort of place. I love moving to new places every few years, so these are places that I could see myself spending extended periods of time.
How safe is Mexico these days? I love the culture, the food, the sights, history and geography, but I always worry about the safety factor, specifically for Americans. Any thoughts and comments based on your experience? Very much appreciated.
I wouldn't still be living here after five years, sharing the beauty and culture and people and food if I didn't believe it was as safe as any other place I've been (except maybe Switzerland, that place is SERIOUSLY safe haha). But truly, I've never had any problems - I've traveled Mexico by car, bus, bike, train and subway and I have found most people to be incredibly kind. I've never experienced people being rude specifically because I'm American or foreign. I speak Spanish to an intermediate level, so I'm sure that helps, but even as a beginner speaker just using por favor, gracias, show that you are trying to speak the language when you can - that goes a long way in any country and culture.
You will be visiting Yelapa? It’s an amazing place! I visited in 1986 (long time ago) but it was incredable! The magic on that place is you have no road, you can get it only by boat! Whe took a little boat on the beach (at the last hotel on the road )! Most American artist was establish over there, restaurants on the beach, jungle, little little village on the mountain, houses in the jungle.... just wow, amasing souvenirs!🥰
Have you thought about making a video of beach communities that are not tourist-y? I would love to see that.
I would say that the coastline towns near los mochis has the least tourists, sadly there’s still a lot of tourists, you could always go to el sabino a bit north west of el fuerte, while not a beach the lake mostly only has locals

I have so enjoyed watching several of your videos this evening. My husband and I lived in Ajijic on Lake Chapala for two years. Though we loved it, we missed our family and returned to the US. Now I'm pining away to get back to Mexico.
Jackie, will you inform about humidity and mosquitoes around Lake Chapala please? No one ever mentions this.
Yes! You have to go to Aguascalientes, life quality is really good, it’s affordable, clean, safe, you will love my city! 🎉
My Map is in my head, haha. An expat “thingy.”

I went but caught bad diarrhea from the salsa or shrimp..I almost died ...other than that it's. good city

I really wish you could have wrote these towns on the screen with a map
Just write them down and Google them. Map comes up and everything . That's not difficult 😎
@@gg6ft7 I'd like a map of the cities WITH the $/city and whether absolutely need Spanish or not. That's not difficult AND she's the one doing the video.
@@beehive5835 Just google it. Super EASY! I love her videos.
@@gg6ft7 I'm not dissing on her videos. I'm just saying how to make improvements that I would like. I get that you like it exactly as it is and don't want her to make any changes. However, not everyone is you. Some people would like more or something different, and rather than NOT watching any of her future videos, we make suggestions.
Your enthusiasm for each place has only made the choice harder :-)
San Miguel is not necessarily more expensive. I rent a new studio apartment in a nice neighborhood including cable TV & internet for $ 275.00 monthly. I have lived in Ensenada, Guanajato, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel, over the last 5 years. Each area has its good & bad, the cost of living is about the same in each one of these towns, you need to be there to find bargains, don’t believe everything you read. Get to know a few locals before making a long term commitment.
Paul
Did you just walk around a neighborhood looking for rentals? How did you find it?
The best from this list: Small town: Sayulita. Cities: Mazatlan and Merida (In fact lovely mid-size cities.)
Love Guadalajara and love Puerto Vallarta!!!
Is Oaxaca safe for 2 solo females?
New sub. Great content. Looking to relocate from Canada...
Wonderful history, climate, food and lovely music and great people.
Thank you for your great videos Laura! I am wondering which Mexico locations you would recommend for a solo female traveler and her dog?
Around Merida, Yucatan peninsula & Oaxaca. Dog lover here! God bless you.
Merida, Cancun, Campeche... Solo female don't go alone anywhere else.

Baja California. BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES is an enchanting fishermen village with a small community of Americans. The nature there is breathtaking.
But Guanajuato and San Miguel are dangerous right now, the government try to occult it but it is true 😪
@@RS-fi7cc dangerous to everyone?
@@nasirb3914 well... People tend to say that bad things just happen to the people in bad steps. But the truth is that in Mexico it is a matter of luck. It is not to alarm but just lets face reality and be counscious that's all. It's sad and besides covid is out of control 😔

@Vicki amaral how cold does it get in Chihuahua? And what time of the year and how long?
I’ve never been there in the winter but they could get rain snow mix. You need a heater at night but I think it warms up in the day.
Chihuahua is frozen and it snows in winter, you should visit Xalapa and Coatepec where there is the best coffee in Mexico, and finally the best city in the State of Veracruz which is Orizaba. Tangerine Travel vloggers visited and loved it.

Very informative. Interesting how you included Chihuahua. The copper canyon area is a gem location that a surprising number of people still don't know about. I am also enamored with "Loreto" on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Cal. Sur. Have you reviewed that location in addition to La Paz?

Safe as other Mexican cities! That's not great sounding, and you live.in a "safe street" as opposed to the dangerous ones there, not a good sign
Hi, I only just saw this. Not sure if you've ever been to Zihuatenejo, on the Pacific Coast? Definitely one to check out. I loved it there but not on the days when the cruise ships were in town 😉
Other places which are really beautiful are Campeche and Bacalar, both in the Yucatan.
But being from Hawaii...Im not into touristy or expat heavy areas. I love Hawaii but the cost of living there is INSANE. Highest in the usa. I now live in a small beach-farming community in SE Asia . Im Glad Merida made it this year again. When are you coming back to The yucatan ?
Great question. There’s so many places to explore in Mexico I can’t justify a fourth trip to this region just yet!

Please add the city of Durango to your travel list. It's a wonderful city. Love your vids.
...your opinion, your likes and dislikes, nevertheless great info. Love your enthusiasm for MX and it’s food, folklore and beauty.

Its safer than the mass shooting spectacle of the United States thats for sure.
How safe is it in the USA?
Specifically for Americans?. that's funny
