Huntsville, Alabama: The BEST Place to Live in the Deep South?

- This certainly doesn't look like Alabama!
Huntsville, Alabama. The rocket city. The space rocket capital of the nation. It’s been called the best most affordable place to live in the nation. You may not know it, but Huntsville is the biggest city in Alabama now. The poverty and crime in Montgomery and Birmingham have driven a lot of people away from those places. And many are coming here. When it comes to growth and innovation, Huntsville is by far the best, most exciting place to live in this whole state. It’s a truly progressive, metropolitan area in the heart of the deep south.
So, I had to go there and see it. The day I picked to drive through Huntsville was a really nice one. It was late in the day in late November of 2021. We’re going to drive around the downtown Huntsville area and talk about this city for a bit.
Now you might not think of Alabama as being very modern and innovative, but there’s some of that here. Right now, you could consider Huntsville a mid-sized city - there’s just over 200,000 people here. This place has a small town feel, but it’s growing fast. Look at that population growth!
A long time ago, Huntsville relied on cotton and the railroad for a lot of its industry. That’s how it was in a lot of the south in the 1800s. At one point, this was even the state capital. But then in the 1940s, during world war 2, the army established some chemical munitions plants, and that brought in a lot of growth. But it wasn’t until 1950 that a missile center opened up and that jump started a population explosion here. The US government then began a program called the Ordnance Guided Missile Center and developed the Redstone Rocket.
That set the stage for the United States Space program to begin here in Huntsville. Today, NASA has a big facility here, where it builds rockets and does a lot of research. A lot of the technology invented here helps with defense as well as space exploration and space research. Rockets were developed here which put the first satellites into orbit and sent men to the moon. Propulsion for the space shuttle was developed here, and modules for the international space station were designed and built in Huntsville as well.
However, in the 1970s, the government ended the Apollo space program, and Huntsville’s economy was nearly crippled. But a resurgence in space exploration and defense systems has been a big boost to the Huntsville economy over the last 30 years. Since the year 2000, Huntsville has become home to the second largest technology and research park in the nation.
Biotech is also a big deal here. Only North Carolina’s research triangle park is larger. They do a lot of genetics work here, and study infectious diseases and cancer research. If you’re an engineer, you’d fit right in. Outside of the Silicon Valley, there’s very few places with more high tech talent. They call it the Silicon Holler.
Boeing, the US Army, the FBI, Google and Facebook have a presence here.
There’s also a Toyota manufacturing center and Mazda manufacturing center here as well. So, safe to say, there’s a ton of jobs and opportunities.
In terms of things to do, there are festivals here all year long and a lot of artsy things. There’s also a big brewery scene here.
It’s fairly conservative here, despite the fact there are people here from all over the world. And because it’s so transitory, the culture here is really diverse, especially for Alabama. To be honest, it doesn’t even feel like Alabama.
They have an awesome park in the heart of downtown called Big Spring Park. Here, they have events and festivals all the time. Like, when I was here, there was an annual event they call the Tinsel Trail.
And the cost of living is SUPER low here. This has been called the best most affordable place you can live in the nation. The average home price is about $250,000 right now, and that’s a STEAL.
Of course no place is perfect. It’s super hot and humid and there’s mosquitos and tornadoes. That’s not fun. While downtown is really safe and fun, there’s bad neighborhoods all over the place It’s not really that violent, but property crimes are up there. The poverty rate for a lot of the population is also higher than the US average.
But Huntsville, Alabama. One of the best places you can live in the south, people. And definitely the best place you can live in the state of Alabama.

Too much of the video is driving through downtown. A walk through Big Spring Park and some of the many other parks and greenways would be nice. Also show Cummins Research Park, UAH and Alabama A&M campuses, the botanical garden, space & rocket center, and new entertainment venues,.
Nick, let us know when you wanna come down to Lower Alabama and we'll show yall around!
I'm from Japan and live in Tokyo. Actually, I went to Alabama to study abroad and stayed at my friend's house in Huntsville. This city is great for me. It's not a too big and small city so I felt comfortable. My favorite place is Big Spring Park. Its Christmas decorations are beautiful!! Someday, I'd like to go there again.
Hi
I was there from 2008 to 2009. Loved Huntsville and UAH
@@AnyBenny Ah I love UAH, such a nice college!
What a coincidence, bro! I would love to visit Tokyo, and Japan! I know Tokyo is a city in Japan, yes, yes. I just meant Tokyo specifically but also Osaka! For the food and culture, and of course some other places too.
I know this comment is old but you’re so lucky to live in Tokyo!!! I fell in LOVE with Tokyo as soon as I landed! ❤️❤️

I live in Huntsville and this is such a nice review! I love Huntsville because it's got the benefits of a big city but you can go 20-30 minutes and be in the country with fields and cows. 🥰. It's growing a lot and things are getting more expensive but we have a bunch of fun things to do with the traditions of the South. Come visit if you can! 😊
I've been many times & I love it.
Agreed
I was so excited to see Nick did a review of Huntsville. But then…it was JUST Huntsville, and he missed a couple big points.
I wish he WOULD HAVE done a review on Madison County & included the surrounding areas. Madison City in particular has stuff to do…Open air mall, beautifully landscaped (Bridge street), a few small businesses/restaurants that are incredible, etc. the NASA space & rocket center alone has tons of stuff to see & do. We have botanical gardens (I’ve never been but bear they’re pretty) & are a 30 min drive to Wheeler state park, although there are many beautiful parks throughout the state.
Madison City has some of the best schools in the state, maybe the country. Very rare to find conservative public schools you can trust with your kids, although I fear that’ll be coming to an end shortly.
The city itself is lame & small, but eclectic. Restaurants, a museum, pubs, and lawyers surround city hall.
Events (concerts, rallies, etc) are held at Von Braun center, named after Werner von Braun, a Nazi defector & genius scientist. He came to Huntsville & put this little place on the map. We have more engineers here per capita. Median household income is $90,000.
I just bought a house. New construction, 3 bed, 2 bath in Toney (growing suburb). It was $270k. And that was a steal. Investors are swooping in and buying houses as quickly as possible so they can turn them into rentals. This will begin to take its toll sooner or later. This mainly occurs in the homes in the actual city & some of the older homes in Madison. They’ve created a market where you can’t buy a home unless it’s new construction. The house I bought was $239k one year ago in being built 5 minutes from my house. Thank Biden for that.
I come from Independence MO & they don’t compare. I’ve been here 15 years and I love it. In that time I’ve also lived in bham which I actually loved even though I was assaulted (I fought him off). And I lived in Franklin for a year which is outside Nashville. Not crazy about Franklin of Nashville.
We do have two universities in the area. One is an historically black college. So yes this place is so integrated & diverse. There seems to be very little racial tensions here, you’re going to have neighbors of all kinds of different backgrounds. This place attracts a lot of smart people who make a lot of money and pay a lot of taxes which allows the area to keep growing & stay beautiful. PLUS it keeps your home value growing, right now it’s outpacing inflation.
I currently live in a very nice apartment, albeit a little small & noisy. It’s brand new, 2 bed 2 bath, $1600 a month. Rent prices skyrocketed during Covid. Although evictions didn’t stop here. We didn’t really shut down. We couldn’t.
Many engineers here work on Redstone Arsenal or for consultants that contract with DoD. My ex husband has too secret security clearance & all I know is he designs missile guidance systems & makes a shit ton of money.
With the country how it is today, I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live than right here. That may change some day. But I feel safe here. I know where my neighbors stand.
Edits: 9 months later I see minor mistakes so I fixed them :).

@@emkay888 I lived in Toney for 10 years. Although that is where I grew up most of my childhood, I like being closer to essential stores and businesses. Now I live outside of Atlanta and really enjoy only having to drive 7 minutes for a Walmart. I remember as a kid driving from toney to Huntsville to get to the Walmart on Sparkman Drive and it took like 30 minutes. And I didn’t mind that as a kid, but now enjoy less drive time. And the racial tension was there at my school. I went to Madison cross roads and sparkman middle. But mind you I haven’t lived there since 2014, so that was almost a decade ago now (time flies!).
Huntsville is affordable though. But I realize now that I’m older that country life just isn’t my thing. I would have rather just lived in Huntsville instead of in Toney.
Shh, don’t talk about it. You wouldn’t want Californians to find out this place exist
I'm in California watching this video right now..
Why not
They already know
Network Engineer here from San Diego who'll be moving there soon. Btw there's more conservatives in California and probably San Diego than in your entire state.
@@joeyelliott3032 its not a problem. Just looking at California in contrast. Its people who bring their politics and policies that ruined California to a already great place. Not saying every californian shares those views, its just a generalization of the type of people who live there, complain about how things are. But voted for the policies and politicians who got them there.
+ Also another issue, they move to a good city, where housing is affordable, and pay above market value driving up the cost of housing and lowering the availability of houses causing the housing prices to skyrocket. It happened in my city not far from Huntsville. House prices were being purchased by many Californians over the pandemic and made it very difficult to find a home for me.
I moved to Alabama in late 2005 and it's crazy how to see Huntsville grow from that time to current times.
I moved away in 1998 and after I came back to visit about 5 or 6 years later it had changed quite a bit.
Try 1974!

I definitely moving back. I'm originally from Nashville and fell in love with Huntsville after a few daytrips there. I love how it has a big city feel while being small. Nashville is pretty much an over crowded tourist city now. I can't wait to go back 🥰
I work in Huntsville as a Glazer and I can assure you it is booming. We have so many new projects going up and alooooot of housing we are doing. If you move here, just help us keep it beautiful 👌
Great review. I have lived in Huntsville for little over a year, and it is the best decision I could’ve made as a young professional starting my career in a place that I could grow with. Great economy and job market. I think Huntsville is going to be big time in the near future.

Hey Joseph! Which areas of Huntsville are bad? North? South? Looking for apartments and don’t live in the area.
@@ShepherdMinistry you can basically just use the eye test and tell. There's bad patches here and there throughout. South Huntsville is the only part with no bad parts, while North has the most bad. That's nothing against North though, there are some cool parts mixed in. And there are all the suburbs to the north, west, and east which are options as well if you don't mind a small drive.
@@EB-bl6cc thank you!

I never looked for homeless people so hard before in my life and I don't know why? Because it was Alabama? Look at that city. It's clean and prosperous. I wish Seattle looked like that. Thanks Nick.
Homelessness is growing here don't be fooled!
the rest of their country puts their homeless in homes
It’s growing, believe me. North Huntsville especially. Either that, or they are being shipped off to Birmingham
There is homeless in the south but they have rescue missions and other homeless shelters they can stay. The police will take them to those homeless shelters. They dont play around.

I lived in Huntsville for about 8 or 9 months. It was definitely a change from small town Mississippi. Bridge Street is a must see for shoppers, and my favorite restaurant was probably Four Leaves Asian. The space and rocket center was one of the most talked about things, but I preferred just driving through the mountains and country side. The botanical gardens are amazing, and the Three Caves Quarry hiking trail was interesting. Several pawn shops and thrift stores. Huntsville has something for everyone.
It is a real pretty town. Looks clean. The young must live in places that are affordable. California is getting ugly!!

All around the city of Huntsville is booming as well. Madison, Big Cove, and Harvest are areas I've seen growing in population. I really started noticing growth when I started my residential electrician job. I live out in Woodville, finally away from all of the traffic, hoodlums, and stuck-up rich folk in Madison/Huntsville lol. If people are wanting to move into north Alabama and still want a nice country area, but not far from Huntsville or Madison, then move out west of Huntsville. It takes me 30mins to get into Huntsville, which is super doable if you have a job in Huntsville or Madison (40mins). Housing prices are not bad out here either. You might be able to snag you a charming old home (early 1900's) for a good price.

Hello good morning
Hey there, my wife and I are looking to move there in the upcoming months. What areas are good for apartment searching? Not sure which are the bad areas of the town.
I moved from the very rural south to Huntsville in 1984. I enrolled into UA-H and graduated from nursing school in 1987. I have moved a few times from Huntsville but always found a reason to come back. I simply love Huntsville. It has something for everyone. It is a versatile city and the people seem to be very open minded and accept people from all walks of life. It is so clean and modern. I enjoy just driving around this modern place. It is definitely not overrated. It's great reputation is very deserving to say the least. Come visit and you will see.
Oh man don't tell everybody about it! Lol. Seriously though thanks for doing this, Huntsville and it's suburbs are an absolute jewel.
true that!
I have lived in Huntsville, Al about three or four times over the years. I saw it grow from where "cotton was king," to the space center and hi-tech. It is indeed a well-planned city with many charms. Beautiful to visit and a wonderful place to call home.

I moved to Foley a little over a year ago. Yes it's growing but still small town. The biggest thing that is happening is we are getting an aldi. It's the talk of the town.
I too grew up in Baldwin County, and it’s true that the vibe in Huntsville is totally different. When I go back to Foley, I can barely figure out where I am unless I stay north of 98/ west of 59. Magnolia Springs is growing too. Huntsville is a much bigger place of course, but I love it.
@@08elk1954 I lived on E. peachtree st, back in 79, the last lot on the left before Winbeglers nursery. It's all house now back in there now. I sorta figured Magnolia Springs was bursting as well. I use to go to trade day out that way with my dad, I love that whole area.
Thanks for your positivity and a really informative video.
My sister lived there when she was in the Army, she loved it! She would move back in a heartbeat!
The review is great! Huntsville has been hastily thriving over the past 10 years. I do miss when everything was slower though, it made it actually feel like the south, somewhat.

What kind of Public Transportation does Huntsville have?
I moved to Huntsville al when I was 11 in 1988. I love it here. Most people are friendly and nice. There is lots of stuff to do and see. Lots of restaurants and good places to shop. Oh and jobs... PLENTY of those to go around. If your a small business owner it's a great place to come. Huntsville and the surrounding areas have exploded over the years. And there's a lot more growth projected for the future. So if you're looking for a great place to live this is it.
Seeing this video is so surreal to me as an Alabamian who grew up in another close city and moved to Huntsville at the start of high school.
Hello Rebekah good morning
I’m getting ready to move to Huntsville next month! I’m really excited!
Looks clean and neat, but as an American living in Europe for so long, most US cities look boring and lifeless, just cars, traffic and buildings. I suppose many people will move there and love it to death as the rents, real-estate and cost of living prices go up so will the living standards drop as like many US cities are no longer affordable or within reach of ordinary people.
After WWII our soldiers came back from Europe, having seen things they couldn't live with. No longer being able to deal, they moved out into the suburbs to get away from their "fellow man". So, don't talk to us about lifeless, we like it that way.
Europe is a continent. Which country are you in?
"Boring and lifeless" to you may mean "serene and calm" to someone else. To each their own. If you're happy in Europe, good for you. If someone else is happy in Huntsville, good for them.
I was also thinking how boring and lifeless it all looked.
@@mayormc Nick said he was there in November. It's cold here in November and we Southerners don't like cold weather so we tend to stay indoors. It would look entirely different it it were filmed, say, in April or the more moderate months. It gets VERY hot here, also. We don't go out as much during those insufferable times either. Power here was cheap, until Biden got elected, so it's less expensive to warm and cool our homes. It's just more comfortable to stay indoors during the weather extremes.
I was there for four years...agree! Denton, Texas and Huntsville, Alabama are the best kept secrets in the USA!
I am from Athens/Huntsville area. I have lived in Atlanta since summer 1995. I have visited Denton. And yes, it's a great city too!
Yessss!! Currently live here and I love it🔥🔥🔥🔥 I’m trying to get my subscribers up too💯 keep it up ❤️
Denton? All I hear is about how it has a bunch of construction now
@@Tikitackfouls Yes, that's the inevitable fallout from the Texas boom. The Denton hinterlands are being paved-over with McMansions. This is primarily evident in the areas to the south and southeast of the city. I always loved the synergistic mix of cowtown and academia in Denton. It kept both sides better centered.
I'm a country boy who moved into the city.
I love my hometown. A perfect blend of both worlds.
in 1978 i worked on several RedStone sensor contracts...as a E.E. grad research student...
cant wait to hear Nicks latest song

I just moved to Washington DC from Huntsville Al.. it will always be home❤️. 256✈️
BABYYY SO PRETTY MY GODDESS ❤❤❤
I didn't know Alabama had nice places to live. Nice music 🎶 by the way.
A+ video!
Great footage and music, really cool to see it when the Tinsel Trail is up.
I'm from NYC, & mom's side of the family is from Bama. Growing up and visiting Mobile always left a special place in my heart. I hope to see Huntsville soon.
❤️My sweet home Alabama!Love from Fairhope❤️
Fairhope🥰…beautiful city!
My dad worked for NASA back in the 70's. We lived in Huntsville...it was a Great place to grow up! We moved to Florida when I was 13. I became a State Trooper after getting out of the Military and my first post was Huntsville, this was 1988. Me and my wife loved living in Huntsville...my son was born at Huntsville Hospital. I live in Jasper, AL now and my son is a Aerospace Engineer in Huntsville!
Thank you for your service
Hey that's awesome man. My son is studying to become an Aerospace Engineer also. My wife and I work remote so we moved to Huntsville 7 months ago to follow him and to get away from the big city. So far we love Huntsville but we're here mainly for his education. Continued good luck to you and your family.
My hometown for 32 years! Great review and you are pretty much right about everything said
My brother (retired military) and his family live here. After moving all over the United States, they love it and say they will never leave Huntsville! Bought a big, beautiful house in Madison! Love the Space and Rocket Center!
Hello Jean good morning how are you
Lived here my whole life and have never heard “the silicon holler.” Also, as an engineer I can confirm that Huntsville is not a high tech place but rather a high defense/space place. If you’re looking into big tech or anything like that then Huntsville is not the place. And I do agree with everyone else that downtown is not representative of the entire city as the rest of the city is a lot more green and surrounded by mountains
I too have lived here my whole life and have never heard it called that.
Agreed, this is the Rocket City
Google and Facebook data centers are establishing themselves here in HSV. So the tech industry is here. It is just a baby. ;)
well, it depends what you mean by "big tech". If you mean big internet companies that are less than 20 years old, no. My dad was an electrical engineer here his whole career and never worked for the space or defense industries, he worked in the consumer electronics and automotive industries. There are a lot of tech companies here that are not building missiles.
I grew up in Decatur and still have tons of family there, and I, too, have never heard anyone call it "the silicon holler". Probably because there aren't any "hollers" until you get over to Jackson and Dekalb Counties. 😅Also, my nephew works for ADTRAN in Huntsville, and I would argue that is a "tech" company.
What a great video Nick! I wish I had about 10 days to go visit that city and area! Huntsville has a large downtown area for sure! Mark in Iowa.
It’s not all that big. Nick drove around and around the same blocks over and over, just changing directions. The downtown isn’t tiny but the video gives a misleading impression.
The route you drove through downtown I've did so many times on my longboard ..I might head down tonight and skate it . nice vid keep it up
Thank you for this video, I was thinking of moving to Huntsville. THis was really helpful
Whenever I watch a video by Nick on an area that I know well, I tend to find that he is accurate in the general details but sometimes a little off in the specifics.
Huntsville is a wonderful place to live and visit. With that said, it may statistically accurate to call Huntsville bigger than Birmingham now, but that's only the city proper. Birmingham metro is much, much larger. I would also argue that there seems to be a national stigma about crime in Birmingham. There are plenty of sketchy neighborhoods, but a great deal of the BHam metro is nice, safe, and clean. My impression has been that Montgomery is far and away the most dangerous of our large cities.
As for Huntsville: the surrounding area (especially east and southeast of the city) is BEAUTIFUL. Mountains and lakes. Also worth mentioning: Lowe Mill Arts center in Huntsville is unlike any place I have ever been. Well worth a visit.
Can confirm this is correct. It's just like some of the huge multimillion pop cities in the US are "technically" only 150,000 pop or some small # because the city proper is some arbitrary area they are still using from 1850 for some reason. But then you look at the metro pop and it's 10 mil. Definitely same deal here. Birmingham is still much larger than Huntsville if you're not using technicalities. Although Huntsville is definitely catching up.
I so badly want to go on a drive with you mic'd up and help with narration
I love Huntsville. I live an hour away & I've been there many times. With both my family & my best friend's family
great production nick ty
I'm really *happy* for Huntsville it is slowly becoming popular ❤😊
Becoming popular is the onset of a city's decline.
That's the first step to having it ruined....
@@omegamale7880 Lol Huntsville just became the largest city in Alabama. Not to mention there are more companies moving to Huntsville to continue the growth.
@@omegamale7880 As someone who grew up in a dying rust belt city, I wish people would “discover” my hometown.
Yessss!! Currently live here and I love it🔥🔥 definitely growing🔥🔥 I’m trying to get my subscribers up too💯 keep it up ❤️
There is so much more to see in Huntsville than what is shown in this video. All it seemed to be in my opinion was a drive around Old Huntsville multiple times. I saw the Madison County Courthouse three times at least. This video misses so many impressive parts of Huntsville including Research Park, Bridge Street, Topgolf and the area around it that provides everything from game play (Dave & Busters) to indoor rock climbing as well as the many restaurants and microbreweries it has. Huntsville is a great place to live.
My sister just moved there back in 2021. And I was just there in the pass October and loved it! I’m from Albuquerque nm so it was some completely new to me!!
I can’t wait to move there this year!!!!
❤❤❤🥰
As someone who's lived in Alabama all his life, I do have to say, Huntsville certainly, absolutely feels like, looks like, and is Alabama at heart. Just because it doesn't look like the most industrial parts of Birmingham or the most bricky parts of Montevallo doesn't mean that it doesn't look like the suburbs of Pelham or like the mountainous parts of Oneonta. Just because it doesn't have people shouting slurs at you doesn't mean that it doesn't have people greeting you in a Walmart randomly or the people reaching out to their neighbors to introduce themselves when someone new moves in. Just because it doesn't fit your idea of what Alabama "is" doesn't mean it isn't like Alabama.
Loved the review other than that, and I really love how you lay out not just the best highlights to it but also the flaws and negatives so people can make informed viewpoints on the topic! Also love how you have the transcript in the description for those hard of hearing or deaf! Very delightful.
As someone born and raised in Alabama, I love and appreciate this comment! I'm currently living up North and the number of negative comments I get when I tell folks where I'm from is saddening. Ppl just hear the negatives and the not positives!
People forget also that a lot of us carry…
@@hunterbrown5150what do you mean about that???
Definitely doesn't feel and look like Alabama. I'm not from there but the rest of Alabama outside of Huntsville, Birmingham and Lake Martin feels dead and boring.
@@vilheard3030 Huntsville is dead also
Lived here for about 5 months. Nice place
My Dad lives in Huntsville and I usually visit him twice a year. Man I love it there
Been here since 2008 and no plans to leave. Lived in NH, Phoenix Valley, Atlanta and Grand Rapids Mi. By far the vest place I have ever lived.
