AHC in NYC was such a cool shop. I was there many times.

I picture AHC just full of hobby stuff from floor to ceiling.

The Cox Sportsman shoud be run on 15% nitro fuel which was the Cox mix in the blue can. Glow engines like to be wet compared to deisels and if reluctant to start the glow element temperature could both be too low or too high. A modern glow driver allows the temperature of the plug to be adjusted. I find a red orange colour to be about the best. If flooded just letting the glow element burn off the excess fuel for 10 to 20 secs. can also work too.
My first Cox engine was a Space Hopper. Ubelievably lightweight, neglible vibration, powerful and silly easy to start. My second Cox engine was the first version of the Special 15 which was the worst engine Cox ever made with Free Flight timer destroying vibration. Kept it for decades and then re engineered it and now it is 20% more powerful, barely vibrates and just brilliant.

I must have not primed correctly on the last flight as the engine started so quickly before that.

That's why we all moved to electric... It was fun back then, but frustrating to start.

Still many glow engines but I agree it can be frustrating at times. I enjoy the challenge of running them.
