Bo and his girlfriend of 8 years (Lorene) own that home. That's his little dog, Bruce, that she's holding. The guesthouse where he films is behind the main house. It's like a little apartment with a mini kitchen and bathroom. But he lives in the main home with his girlfriend and furbabies. People need to remember that he's very genuine about his anxiety, but Inside is also performance art. Bo is in more control over himself as a performer than some people think. He's been "outside" now plenty and was functional enough through the production to donate to social justice causes and ask others to do so as well. He wasn't just trying to heal with comedy alone. He gave away his money. "No!" Yes... 😉

My favorite part of this song is how he begins it by asking "on a scale from 1 to 0, are you happy?" And then later following it up with "on a scale from 1 to 2 now, are you happy?" Not only showing how people mistakingly think happiness is a binary yes or no. But also how the pursuit of happiness is an ongoing struggle. That the "1" that was the yes option is now no longer good enough and it is now the no option. That everything is relative and what you think will MAKE you happy will really only be a temporary boost. That maybe, trying to be perfectly happy all the time isnt what you should be striving for. And it's okay to embrace the downs as well as the highs as part of the human experience.

The ending is... it was bittersweet. Nobody, not even Bo, knew if or when he'd return to comedy. The thing that gave him a good life, comedy and music, were hurting him. He left it behind in that little guest house, but the door was open. One, to show us where he found his happiness, and two, to show us, the viewers, that the door was open. He hadn't shut off doing comedy forever, but it would be a while. Could have been one or ten years, but the door was open.
    Then Inside happened. :D

Every special of his, with the exception of Words, Words, Words has a progressively depressing/deep ending that makes us as the audience think it’s his last one. I watched make happy at 6 am the day it premiered and was left with this incredible melancholy feeling because the special was so brilliant but it really seemed like he was done for good.

    “You’re everything you hated”
Great analogy, I believe Bo has become everything he hated, what the industry wanted him to be. I don’t think he even liked doing stand up comedy at that point, he was more into the arts of productions and lights. Which is what we got in the beautiful “inside” special ❤️
Like in the intro to his “what” special, he says “you use to do comedy, when you felt like being funny, but now your contractually obligated, so dance you fucken monkey.”

  • @EmilyLovesUD

At the end, that was his long-term girlfriend Lorene and their dog Bruce! Which yes, I think you're right in that that is what brings him the most happiness, but also I think him leaving the room and going into the house with them was showing how he was moving away from comedy and taking a break from that life.

  • @stefanasahanagiu349
    @stefanasahanagiu349 3 года назад +15

One thing I took from this song is: initially he asks are you happy on a scale from 1 to 0 (which I translate to yes or no - a very black and white way to see things) and then he changes it to a scale from 1 to 2 (which I see more as a relative measuring, you can be more or less happy, but you wouln't think of less happy as unhappy) and I think this lines up with the rest of the song.
Also the 'you're on your own from here now' I took both in the sense of 'I'm taking a break' but also "ok you had a distraction with this comedy show, now you will go back to your real lives, are you happy there? You came here to laugh and feel good, I gave you that, can you create a happy life for yourself or are you constantily relying on external distractions for that?" which I think matches the title of the special "Make happy"

I think with the "You're on your own from here" bit, it wasn't just that he was planning to take a break, he didn't even know if he would ever be back. After Make Happy, as I recall it was TBD whether he would ever go back to stand-up/musical comedy. I (and I'm sure a lot of his long-time fans) was especially excited when he announced Inside because honestly it wasn't clear until that announcement whether he would ever do another special.

  • @ChocoKid26

He has a girlfriend, or fiancée I dont know, and a dog. That ending with him leaving The Room and going to greet them happily might be about him leaving the scene to work on things that makes him happy. I'm sure that the special was released after all the liveshows had been done and Are You Happy was obviously done for the Netflix special and thus being added as a "goodbye" or "goodbye for now" kind of thing. Or we're reading to much into it¯\_(ツ)_/¯ who knows. But a nice reaction to a song that doesnt really have a lot of information in it. Looking forward to the next one.

Bo going outside to see his girlfriend and his dog at the house they live in is his way of telling his audience to not worry about him. There are so many other things to be concerned about in this world.
At the same time it's an acknowledgment that privilege doesn't guarantee happiness and doesn't guarantee good mental health. He made a special to tell his audience that he needs to stop doing the thing he loves because he needs to work on himself, and that sometimes it's ok to take time to work on yourself even if you are a person of relative privilege. In fact, normalizing that behavior can make the world a better place for everyone to live in and strive for happiness.

If you recall in the Kanye Rant the lyrics change from "can't handle this right now" to "I'll handle this right now." This and "Are You Happy?" are indicative that he had already planned to step away from live comedy and focus on his mental health so hopefully he could return. But as others have stated he didn't know if he'd ever be back and he was pretty up front about that in interviews following "Make Happy." Also he had a couple directing gigs that happened pretty soon after he finished "Make Happy" and they were probably things that his agent had set up long before. You don't just show up to direct a Chris Rock comedy special a few weeks after interviewing for the gig (though that said I guess Rock didn't care for Burnham's cut because he had the entire special re-edited and then released the newer version). And then of course Bo wrote and directed "Eighth Grade" so while he was working on his panic attacks he also had a pretty productive and busy five years.

This song is an extra when you watch it on Netflix. It comes after the song Can't Handle This. The family is symbolic for what he thinks what will make him happy. In Can't Handle This, I theorize that the potato chips represents happiness, and when you force it, it won't come out right, spilling on your face. He also mentioned that he wanted a daughter, because she could reach the potato chips having small hands. So, if the chips represents happiness, he's saying that he wants a daughter so she can give him happiness. My own personal theory.

i think of him saying ''what kind of question is ''am I happy''?'' as him saying we shouldn't have to think of that when being asked if we are happy or not, if we are truly happy we should know and not have to question ourselves on it or hesitate. Maybe even bo himself was asking himself that question which is why he mentioned it and why he has frustration towards the question.

I have to add, the line “which is stupid cus I wouldn’t even want it if I got…” Honestly, for me it hits bc being depressed is my safe space. When I’m happy, I’m constantly waiting for the shoe the drop. So I’d rather be sad bc I’ve conditioned myself to be sad. Happiness as you said is fleeting and I don’t want it bc I know it’ll go away quickly and who knows when. That just ties in with your ending so I wanted to connect those two and everything

Getting happy is actually quite scary..
I had (like a lot of others issues with depression) a thing I realized wich is very counter productive ofcourse.
You’re kind of used to feeling like sh%# so… there are parts of you that are sort of comforted by feeling like shit… Because it’s “safe”, the factors involved are known while happiness and all the work to get there could often seem like a long unknown road and thinking about it just may make you feel even worse.
(That’s my analysis of “even if I got it, I’m not sure if I want it)
(I am “happy” nowadays by the way - it’s ofcourse not a binary state of being, which is also part of the lyrics btw, but I don’t feel like ass most of the time anymore and even when I do it seems to have a more practical reason.
For years I simply could not tell what exactly was making me feel sad… I just was for no perticular reason at all.)

To me the question "are you happy?" is kinda sus, cause I'm immediately anxious about poorly defined terms. What is happiness? What does it mean to be happy? You can't really compare it to anything because you don't have a baseline. Which is kinda represented in the scale of one to zero he mentions, and later the one to two. So the scale changes, the definition of happiness changes, but you still don't actually have a baseline to compare your own happiness to. Usually in my personal life I would answer a question like this with "i'm content with life right now". It's not much, but I guess that's as close to "happy" as one can be.

The song starts off directed to his audience, and he makes it very personal by saying "oh, good, it's just us." Every time he asks a question, it's 100% directed at the viewer. This particular song really serves as an immediate follow up to "Can't Handle This."
"Come and watch the skinny kid with the steadily declining mental health, and laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself." He literally broke himself on this tour, to the point where he needed to take a long break from performing, and the last line of "Can't Handle This" leads directly into this song. "Good night, I hope you're happy."
When someone tells you "I hope your happy," it essentially means that you've done something wrong and are getting to see the consequences of your actions. "Are You Happy?" expands that theme... did the viewer get enough enjoyment out of "Make Happy" to justify what Bo put himself through to "Make" YOU "Happy."
It's also telling that he never phrases it "Am *I* happy?"

  • @geoffras22
    @geoffras22 3 года назад

The whole message of the song is in the 0/1 scale and 1/2 scale. People who treat happiness like it is binary will never get there, because it ignores, as you alluded to, how fleeting & malleable happiness is. People who get beyond that have a much better chance of achieving overall happiness because they've accepted that you need some of the sad moments to appreciate the good ones.

My thoughts on him asking what kind of question even is "Are You Happy?" is that it's vague. If you put that question in a vaccum separated from context it could mean any one of a million different things. There isn't even one kind of happiness, and are you talking about long-term happiness, short-term happiness, a forver kind of happy? It's both a really direct and meaningful question while also being a completely vague and meaningless question.
We all kind of loosely know what people mean when they ask you "Are you Happy?" but almost none of us could actually answer that question.

That part where he sings "Hey, look mom, I made it. Are you happy?" makes me think you can get exactly what you want, and still not be happy. Not that I think that's what he meant, it just makes me think...

the reason its laggy is because they filmed it using a 3rd party site, due to netflix copyright laws, you wont have to worry about the video being striked but thats why it lagged so much

I interpreted the last parts where he says he "wouldn't even want it if I got it," and "hey look Ma, I made it, are you happy?" as how some people are so used to being unhappy and/or depressed that if they finally achieved happiness or some sense of mental healthiness, they wouldn't even want it because that unhappiness becomes their comfort zone.
And the part where he asks "Ma I made it, are you happy?" in my opinion means, in the context of the song, "Hey mom. I'm everything I hate, I made it to this extremely low and anxious point in my life. Are you happy with me? Are you still proud of what your child has become?", adopting a pessimistic view about their own life basically.
I may be incorrect when it comes to this, but as someone who also suffers from anxiety and even depression, you can take my interpretation with a grain of salt.

He's doing both. He's asking you if you're gonna stay happy after the show is done (and he leaves comedy for good, as he thought he was doing at the time), but he's also asking himself if he's happy with how his life and career went, the answer is no, which is why he has to leave because he "can't handle this" like he explains in the previous song. Finally he's asking his mom if she's happy (almost looking for meaning in this situation that benefits no one, like "I did all for nothing, or did I at least made you proud by achieving fame?" (which again is what makes him unhappy). It's layered. That's why we live his art.

I got some random thought, pls tell me your opinion guys. Since he's talking to himself in the end (you've become what you hated), thinking he's talking about him the whole song is close by. But maybe, just maybe the whole special make happy was about his try to make himself happy. He is asking now if he is happy after he made the special make happy, so why not? :)

He hates the industry. Because he became what he hated. And he wonders if he is happy. And he's asking his mom if this source of unhappiness for him, makes her happy. He even alludes to this unhappiness in words words words about how he is a hypocrite for conforming to the industry's practices

Why watch a random youtube video with subtitles, in two languages no less, that covers most of the screen and stutters like crazy, when you could just find the place in the special on Netflix and view it there? Then you would also get the great violin part that the song transitions to.
