- You don’t need to spend $50,000 to have a legit overland SUV you can off-road in all day and sleep in at night. You don’t even need to drop $10,000. I’m effectively $5,000 into my 1998 Mitsubishi Montero so far; here’s how Andrew Collins, our resident Baja Enthusiast, got this budget-friendly rig set up without sacrificing too much comfort or safety.

Little bit of money, little bit of skills, willingness and creativity, that’s what I’ve just found here. Sunrise is beautiful, cheers.
Love these Monteros, they have Overlanding in mind when they enginnered these vehices.
You can fold up the three rows and converted to a confy bed. Tead the owners manual. For storage you can use a roof rack or a hitch rack.
I've got the 2.8 litres turbo diesel same chassis and It costed 5900 euros with 200.000 kms... so it was genial. So cheap, quite reliable not much powerful but enough to enjoy it!
i am in England, i have the same, although mine is called a Pajero cos its Japan import speck (UK spec is called Shogun). Quite a bit of power and torque from the 2.8 TD engine compared to other stuff i have had, like the 3.1 Trooper
You can shim the waste gate on the tubro and turn up the fuel on the VE pump to wake up those 2.8L engines. Highly advised to install an EGT gauge though so you can avoid overdoing it and melting a piston.
Got job man. I got the 1994 2.8 diesel model with more than 230000 miles on it. I'm thinking converting it into camper. Keep up 💯👌
The body lines on the Montero aged much better than most
The video is exactly what the title says it is. Thanks for the view starting at 3:50
Why not take out the second row of seating also?
Less weight ...you could end up with more head room.
YOu can always put it back in again
It seems like he uses it as a platform for his makeshift bed.
@@swpdisciple you wouldn't need the platform anymore.....you could store stuff where the seats were taken out and put your bed on top of that.
It is stupid to have seats in a vehicle.... if they are not being used....use it for storage instead!
SUPERCOCKROACH666 fair enough point.
Yes that's the way to do it. Remove the middle seats. They weigh a tonne.
@@SUPERCOCKROACH666 agreed, plus the sears weigh around 50kg combined...
.
Love your Montero! bed dimensions?
Hell yeah that was so helpful and inspirational. I have a 97 montero sr I need to restore and this is giving me a plethora of motivation to continue!
the montero is really the best suv for this. value for money to the extreme
Lovely... Great camping experince right there! Enjoy every moment...
What a great trip!! Enjoy Baja!
If you haven't already, you owe it to yourself to read "Baja California: Hunting, Fishing, and Travel in Lower California, Mexico" by Ralph Hancock (1954).
I didnt even know Judd Nelson did car reviews
Good vid 👍Have mine within the week !! Aussie version waaaaahoooo :)
I have the next gen. Doing the same thing 👍👍👍
I can fit a full size air mattress in the back of my lofted V6 4wd rav4 sport and me and my GF spend many nights cuddle up in big bend and the beach
;)
Tool box full with "10mm sockets".
Legend xD
Love it man!! i car camped in a 1990 civic wagon!! lol... tight squeeze but it worked and cheap!!
Great rig, great group. Good job.
All those people so close together. I'd rather be near nobody.
Ya think my Ford Escape would do well? Subbed.
Did you ever do anything with your Escape? That was 2 yrs ago so you might not even have it anymore. I have an old Mazda Tribute, so essentially the same vehicle, and have done a little with it. Just barely big enough to sleep in when configured the right way.
Lol. Why the gloves?
Hand jibbers can lead to blisters.
@@usmcdoc2512 😂🤣
take the middle seat section out too
What boxes did u use ? On mine i see that it has to be 34cm high
I love those Monteros. There so much fun. What do you think about any old CR-V which would be a bit cheaper over here for the same platform. Maybe not the same space but you can roll with it.
What wheels and tires are you running? They look great
how long is your sleeping area? Do you think I could fit in (186cm)?
Want to do the same sleeping setup with my pajero sport
What are those tyre sizes?
If you don't move the front seats forward you must be a really short guy or you can handle sleeping with your knees bent.
They weren't so cheap when purchased new. I purchased a 2001 full size in late 2000 and the price was a little over $33,000. But...they don't hold good value.
Whats the wheel setup on that?
What kind of cap is that in the tundra?
Nice!! I'm looking at an SUV..time to trade in my matrix. Far too small!!
Tools bin is just full of 10mm sockets lmao! Only mechanics will fully understand lol!
Cool vid bro
Why not set up a swag
Nice
I drive a Honda Element and it does overland is its great
Montero? They're called a Pajero in Australia.
US version has always been called the Montero
here they cost like 10 grand or more
Thanks for making a video on absolutely nothing useful regarding the Montero 😁👍
"We Made A Cheap SUV Perfect For Sleeping, Camping And Off-Roading" Just in case you didn't see the title....
Hahahah what?
Love it
serbian paramilitary commander car
You mean Pajero
This is a Jeep
SUV? Wtf
Your website has become basically unusable
Insert sexist comment about reporter’s looks, and trash whole review because of the reporter’s gender. Wait, what? Isn’t that how it’s done?
Those SUV's are worthless in every direction, people who do these types of adventures in my country usually use A Hyundai H100(PORTER), 6x6
And they are even cheaper new then these suvs second hand, and more economical
ENVER PASHAIDRIS I have look those up, couldn’t find any 6x6. It looks like a mini truck/lorry.
@@tkangwei
Those koreans are smart a.f.
They did not put a large wheel on the back because then it would be as high as a Lorry, They put two small wheels side by side so it has a low load height, so it really is 6x6 the rear axle pushes 4 wheels
