- Hiking Colorado Crested Butte’s Gothic Mountain - False Peaks & Deer Tracks
Full Trail Guide to Gothic Mountain With thanks to @Travel Crested Butte
Second summit of the COlorado summer. Gothic Mountain at 12,631 feet. Located in the Elk Mountain Range of the Rocky Mountains inside Gunnison National Forest and just 1 mile past the old ghost town of Gothic. The trail starts on the 403 trail, and is one of the most difficult ones in Crested Butte. The approach on trail 403 during wildflower season can be extremely rewarding. Once on the climb, very steep slopes make for challenging progress, but jaw-dropping views.

What's your favorite mountain for summit views?
❤❤ 🇺🇸
For me, it was the Pyrenees mountains on the boarder of France and Spain. There's a Hostel Halfway up to spend the night. So beautiful up there.
@@lawrencet83 That sounds fantastic. I would love to do more hut to hut hiking.
Mount Dana in Yosemite. Mono Lake on one side, and Tuolumne Meadows and the Cathedral Range on the other.
Nevada Hiker I haven’t done that one. I love that area though
I love hiking Colorado. I prefer the more rugged terrain, kinda like what you were doing towards the end of the video. I usually make the duration of my trips out that way a couple of weeks since even though I'm a strong hiker, it still takes me 2-3 days just to get acclimated to the elevations, after which time I'm fine. The scenery just takes one's breath away! Thanks for sharing this hike.
Great views all around...you had to lichen that hike. You looked pooped coming back down but fully appreciate that!! Look forward to your next one.
Fabulous video!! I’m looking for spring & summer backpacking trips!
Really enjoyed this gorgeous trail and majestic views! Thanks again Alice!
John Vanderlip I’m so glad. Thanks for watching
Wow that view at 0:13 is beautiful! You really break down the hike very detailed. Great guide!
The views are stunning but the path is so high and so narrow in places - definitely scary in places!
Simply amazing views. well done, you're a great host.
Thanks so much. Happy holidays
@@AliceFordAdventures Happy holidays indeed :)
Last year was really a bad year for Colorado Wild Fires everywhere. We have had a lot of beetle kill and lots of standing dead. It took way too long to get under control. These fires and beetle kill really do destroy the beauty that Colorado is. Tis sad. I use to think as a kid these were ski runs.
What a great hike . Thanks for sharing. This has me stoked to start the Colorado trail
The Gothic mountain hike is really spectacular, right in the lap of nature, the views from the summit are really exhilarating.
Absolutely, so many great places to camp and just be out in the wilderness out here too.
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
OMG! That ridgeline after the 2nd false peak looks so so so so scary!!! Those views though, holy crow, they look so worth the climb! I have really bad altitude sickness because of my asthma, so I don't know if I could summit this. I'm gonna try to work my way up to it though because it looks incredible.
Such a great hike, it was long but well worth it.
LOVE Colorado, there are so many amazing spots to go hiking and the landscape is so diverse. This is another hike i'll be adding to the list!
Yes. I love Colorado. I already want to go back
This is the second time today I've seen stuff about Crested Butte, which clearly means I should go visit, lol. All of the views are stunning, but really, that first one just blew me away. It looks like what I imagine an alpine scene in Europe would look like. Simply beautiful!
Wander Florida It’s really beautiful in Crested Butte. From the mountain tops it is totally like Europe and the little mountain towns in CO are just as great
Such an amazing location and the views are drop dead gorgeous!
I wanted to go to crested butte when I was in Colorado last, but I ended up in the Eagle Nest Wilderness National Park in Silverthorne. I was in awe of the mountains and feeling completely insignificant and at the mercy of the elements. I climbed three different mountains while I was there and toured around the Arapahoe Basin and Brekenridge. It's something that I'll never forget.
And I've just spent the day going through your back catalogue. If I could leave my job and travel, that would be a dream come true 🙂
Thank you Alex. Colorado truly is a beautiful place. Love the area around Breck too. Great skiing there in the winter. You can't go wrong with any of the CO mountain towns. :)
Damn that ridge towards the summit looks so thin! Hahaha beautiful views
JomWithSamad It was so thin, or so I thought until I hiked the next mountain 🏔
Now that was a false summit. Good job. 👍👍👍.
Oh, I love the Colorado Mountains. In 1995 I did a 26-day mountaineering course with Colorado Outward Bound. Great trip but sadly have never been back. Thanks for the video!
Thats so cool, my sister did Outward Bound! You must go back!
Such a beautiful hike!! Wow! Makes me wish I had stopped in Crested Butte last time I was in CO. To add to the list I guess :)
Yes you must, its great there.
Keep up the great work.
*Alice Ford* Thanks for this! Can't wait for More. Oh Have a superior day! :d
PewDiePie-Fake Thanks so much! You too
Awesome video! Did you get to hike Elbert or Grays yet!?
No I didn’t. I was hoping to do them before I left Colorado but didn’t get a chance
Oh well, the mountains aren't going anywhere, you'll get more chances! At least you got Longs!
Wow the hike looks amazing, with views like these, even a non-hiker like me would love to go. Does the hike need any sort of prep before the trip?
Thats awesome, the only prep really is just packing your essential items. Water, layers, snacks and trekking poles. Its a high elevation so going slow is a great idea for everyone too.
Thanks for sharing! Where do you plan to travel internationally once travel restrictions are lifted?
PacNW Hiker Hard to say. I have to go back to work this week. And basically be under quarantine for the foreseeable future so we will see. I’d love to go to New Zealand or Peru though
How do you get to trail head for this hike? Can you get there without a Jeep?
Brad Moore Hi Brad. This trail starts on Washington Gulch Rd right at the start of the 403 trail. There is only one turn that would be difficult to pass if in a low clearance 2wd vehicle. It’s possible to park south of this and walk the extra distance or bike there as well. Here is a link to the trail as well Dropped pin
Near Co Rd 811, Crested Butte, CO 81224

@@AliceFordAdventures Thank you, Alice! This is great information. We are traveling in 4WD Toyota Tundra, so it sounds like we should be able to drive to trail head.
Brad Moore oh yes absolutely you’ll be fine in a Toyota Tundra. I recommend Teocalli too. Though that road is much more exciting
@@AliceFordAdventures just returned from CB. Unfortunately, we missed turn to 403, ended up at West Maroon Pass . Turned back and decided to hike 401. After steep hike we found entrance to Gothic Summit from 401 approach. It was getting too late in the day to hike an unknown trail. We returned on 401. The next two days t snowed! We plan to return and finish this hike next year. Is the path along the false peaks wide enough to be safe or intermediated hikers?
@@bradmoore7743 Wow that sounds like quite the adventure. the path on the ridge is narrow but should be fine for an intermediate hiker.
Great views! Today at elevation 1200 ft. it was like a 91*F pressure cooker with the heat & humidity, now go treat yourself to some oxygen.
john young Well I’m glad it wasn’t that hot on this hike. Lol I much prefer a cool 75 😉
@@AliceFordAdventures it was a 2 shower day today!
Isn’t it scary at the top? I mean after the false peak, the views look wow, but so scary 😬
The ridgeline was worse than the summit, and the views certainly made up it.
Say what, stunt woman?!
Yep that’s my day job. :)
❤❤ 🇺🇸
That looks scary as crap
There were definitely some pretty borrow sections but the drop off was not straight down so even if you fell you wouldn’t die 😆
