In the third party commercial world.....whenever I write up a compressor for replacement, I stress that most compressors do not die from natural causes. Indeed.... most are murdered. I always mention that there are several potential causes of failure, and those causes cannot be identified until the defective compressor is replaced with a working compressor. Those potential causes include: 1) dirty condenser coils, 2) clogged or defective metering device(s), 3) overcharging by other contractors because of the metering device, or restriction other than the metering device, and 4) power or capacitor problems. The client or trade specialist or rep then understands that there will very often be a follow-up quote once the causal factor has been identified. If the dryer which was replaced during the compressor replacement is severely restricted, then often no other cause is found, but we need to make the customer aware of the potential additional costs BEFORE the work gets approved. In some cases, knowing that additional work could nearly double the repair cost, the client will ask for a unit replacement quote as well so they can give the store corporate all of the available options.

I was watching the brazing of the suction line to the compressor, happy to see the use of nitrogen and wondering how the nitrogen was being vented since the rubber plug was still on the discharge line connection on the compressor. I always worked alone and therefore never could have turned over a compressor replacement in such a short time as you both did! King valves and Service valves are different. You don't see King valves on modern units, they were mostly used on Carrier products. King valves, did not have schrader valves in them, you had to close them slightly to get pressure to the line ports. Service valves have schrader valves in them, so all you have to do is put your hoses on them. I always hated King valves, because you always had to have a service wrench to check pressures. On my last compressor I fit up my compressor.....then cut it out in a spot where I could put an RLS coupling on the suction and discharge. I then removed the compressor and brazed the piping outside the condenser in a more accessible spot and pressed it in at the couplings. Worked well. My only concern was how the discharge coupling would hold up. Only time will tell.

Could you also use staybrite 8 on that compressor install rather than braise and then you would not have needed to flow nitrogen? Just curious on the limitations of what you braise vs what you can use staybrite on.

I actually had another tech condemn a compressor on an older unit he had done some work on and closed the isolated valves and forget to open them. So it would blow the breaker immediately on start up. So he recovered the charge and my manager sent me back the next day. I was about a year in so I went back thinking it was recovered did exactly what you did and it blew right in my face. Did nothing to me except stain my shorts haha. But dam that thing blew
It’s OK to make mistakes when you’re just learning come in from plumbing and have not grasp all the basic concepts yet of HVAC. 80 foot line length have you read the installation manual supplement for extended line length ?? Cut open and inspect the compressor possibly see the top surfaces of the scroll ground away and signs of lack of lubrication from floodback ? Long line length I’m going to gather there was no one-way check valve added in the liquid line ? Think I noticed no heater blanket on the compressor to prevent flooded starts ? Did you pour out and measure the amount of oil that should be in the compressor to make sure the evaporator is not log with oil that left the compressor but did not return ? I was not going to mention the filter dryer. Like watching your videos as you progressive long and become better and better as you learn it’s a process. You remind me of my first old boss in general contractor in construction you guys must be brothers from another mother lol 😂 That unexpected extra high high side head pressure you may want to test for non-condensables ?
Awe, Mike I luv ya bruh. Trades, Yo! I’d never troll ya, but I will shade. A lot of rookie mistakes here my man. At least you fest up and that’s honest.

Although StayBrite-8 could prob handle a high vibration connection I would feel better about a regular silphos joint right at the compressor.
Hope he opened cutoff ports he previously closed or there was no nitrogen flowing to compressor fittings when he brazed them.
The only thing I saw that I didn't like was reusing the 410 A. Always use new refrigerant with 410a.
Great videos bro ! !
It’s difficult to make a video and do everything exact. Even if your not making a video there is a process to doing it all
Mikey pipes, got an idea. You showed your kneeling pad in this video. Let's bring your pad and trolls together by making a personal kneeling pad with a trolls face, so when you kneel on it, your knee is digging into there face. Hey maybe you can sell troll mats called HATERS!. Once again, great content, keep it up.
thought you were going somewhere else with that lol
@@Lewdacris916 Jordan, I missed this. What where you guys thinking?
@@Lewdacris916 Jordan I believe I now see what you and Mike thought lmao, wow
mikey pipes weve all been there, id be lying if i said i always changed the line drier on a evap or compressor change
Just keeping it real, thank you for also keeping it real
Mikey you are going to get a surprise with refrigerant you still have pressure stored in condenser by front seating service valve’s
I was cringing so hard when you put that torch on there. Glad you noticed before she blew
You remind me of my first old boss in general contractor in construction you guys must be brothers from another mother lol 😂
That unexpected extra high high side head pressure you may want to test for non-condensables ?
good job and you are also a best entertainer.
Aw, shucks! I'm blushing behind the camera. Thanks for the kind words!
Awe, Mike I luv ya bruh. Trades, Yo!
I’d never troll ya, but I will shade.
A lot of rookie mistakes here my man. At least you fest up and that’s honest.
wait so is there a way to recover just the condenser/compressor side of the system or not?
Hi, I missed it , do you reuse the refrigerant from the old compressor
I was increasingly confused when you were closing the king valves I thought I had it wrong this whole time.
Mikey will you get a press tool for HVAC work, think make a killer video with the a press silver driver and fittings
Yes i have seen, what i meet to ask why not use it on a repair like this?
One little if it was possible I would put the filter dryer inside.
Not sure what to say... "how not to replace a compressor". My apprentice got a good laugh.
Mikey great content as always and thanks for the laughs as well. Great job
Hey Mikey tell air force next time he 's gonna lift a scroll compressor he puts a big screw driver in that hole on top. it helps a lot
Lol Close call Mikey....it happens...I was like DOH WAIT!!. thats the Testos i wanna get!!
@@PipeDoctor maybe someday ill have a set lol
If your head pressure was that high them that compressor won’t last. Should’ve checked the metering device and for kinks. These rheems dont like long runs either. I always upsize the line set on 4 ton to 10 rheem splits
That was a can't see it from my house video!🥴🤣🤣
Thanks again for the videos 🥃🍺
LOL A good technician is cognizant of his surroundings and corrects his mistakes as he makes them. Don't worry you're only human, Mikey. How hot was it you might be able to also claim being *delirious.* That said I think these Ruuds may not be that great I replaced one a few months ago due to no pumper, compressor just spinning eating 18amps of energy all day long for the fun of it.
If not for these antics, it would be a good video :)
Mikey as soon as you closed your king valves I was like your doing it wrong lol. Oops big dumb dumb mistake happen nice torch set up
Why didn’t you use stay brite.
Damn good install brotha
Thank you very much
Love your videos bro !
Glad you like them!
Lol. Was just saying . All you did was pump down the evaporator side . Lol you had me confused. I’m doing a 3-1/2 ton trane next week . Have to replace the compressor. And no service panel like the Rheem .
Why braze instead of using the stay bright 8?
Why did you brazed it and not use the stay-brite
I understand what you were trying to do by isolating those lines, and i was thinking so hard how that was going to work?? Lmao, i was being dumb too.
Another educational video, keep em coming. (no tip today what happened). $$
