  • The Huddle Breakdown is back for another season! This week, Alan and James are joined by Laura Bradburn from Thoughts on the Hoops who is filling in for our friend Down Under, Enda Coll. We dissect a promising start to the season and discuss the predictable lack of transfer activity from the club.

    Welcome back Alan and James, and welcome - hopefully not for the last time - Laura!
    Agree with everything said about the transfer window, and I have a couple things to add:
    (1) historically in the summer window, players bought in July have been not good (being diplomatic with my words!), and the players brought in at the end of the window have historically had a much higher ‘hit’ rate. In the last 10 years the only players signed in July for the first time - exercising purchase options or renewing a loan deal doesn’t count! - that have been successes have been Dembele, Virgil Van Dyke, and Kyogo.
    (2) Brendan has been like a broken record that the transfers need more quality. Realistically with the performances this team is getting right now, anyone coming in that would immediately get in the starting lineup is capable of playing in England or one of the other top 5 leagues. Most of those players who may be considering Celtic are doing so as a fall back option at this point in the window and have ambition to play in the premier league. And even if the players themselves don’t, their current clubs absolutely want to be getting the regular 8-figure fee that selling into the EPL would bring. As we get to the end of the window, some of those potential EPL deals will not materialize and both players and clubs will be much more willing to do business with Celtic. We’re not going to get the quality we’re looking for for £4-6m while the player is still holding out for £80k/wk wages and the selling club is holding out for £15m. That will change the last week of August like it always has.
    (3) lastly the market right now is absolutely frozen because of FSR rules not only in UEFA, but more importantly because of the points deductions last year in England. So many teams are flying too close to the sun, and we’re seeing an unprecedented level of restraint because of it. But that’s having a trickle down effect all over Europe as selling clubs are still holding out for the kinds of fees that English clubs have historically paid. I suspect when the window closes, the big story is going to be the utter lack of deals done relative to historical norms. I think this is part of a reset in the broader marketplace, and I suspect a lot of the deals that will take place on deadline day will be for knock down prices because the big offers just won’t materialize. If I’m right about all this, it will work to Celtic’s advantage because out budget and spending ability hasn’t really changed or been affected, but the money we do spend should - in theory - go a lot further in terms of the quality of player.

    • @johnmcvey7014
      @johnmcvey7014 Месяц назад

      Good to read a bit of sense for a change! I am absolutely bored stiff listening to these Celtic fan RUclips channels propagating the view that Celtic should be signing about 6 class players every season. If the fans got their way, we would never gel as a team, our squad would be a bloated mess, youth players would never get a chance and the club would go into administration in about 3 years after huge transfer fees and unsustainable salary contracts.

    • @benjaminlynch9958
      @benjaminlynch9958 Месяц назад

      @@johnmcvey7014I actually think 6 players per year (including the Jan window) is about right. Most successful players and managers these days stay no more than 2-3 years on average before leaving for a bigger opportunity. If one assumes a non-homegrown squad of 17 players (to align with UEFA squad rules), that’s about 6 player per year that are waking out the door that need to be replaced.
      Right now the squad is really bloated and there’s way more than 17 non-homegrown players, but that’s because the quality of recruitment has meant that a lot of those bought in previous years on 4-5 year deals aren’t moving on in 2-3 years but are ‘stuck’ at Celtic for the duration of their contracts. And as successive managers refuse to play them, they essentially recruit a ‘replacement’ 3-4 years before the first player even leaves.
      The issue I was trying to make in the original post is that the quality that both fans and the manager want almost always comes at the end of the summer window rather than the beginning of it. The players who are enthusiastic about joining Celtic in July generally won’t have any hope of getting to the Premier League or any top-5 league, and nor will their current clubs have any misguided notions of receiving those types of fees for those players. In short: if a player is wanting to sign for Celtic in July, and the club is willing to sell for the paltry amount Celtic have traditionally paid, it should be a HUGE red flag that perhaps the player isn’t good enough for Celtic and isn’t the kind of quality that we’re looking for. There are obviously exceptions, but generally speaking I think that’s the case. A lot of fans and fan media are banging on about the lack of quality signings so far - and understandably so as the squad NEEDS quality additions - but to me the lack of activity so far is actually a GOOD thing as it indicates Celtic have learned a lesson and aren’t settling for inferior players and are waiting until the end of the window to get the quality that everyone so desperately wants.

    • @frankbrennan1619
      @frankbrennan1619 Месяц назад

      @@benjaminlynch9958 The word ''quality'' gets bandied around so much these days there really should be some kind of ''quality control'' about how it's used & of course ''quality'' is such a subjective notion, since my idea of ''quality'' will differ to the next guy's idea of ''quality'' & often it's better to start from the baseline of what can be agreed what ''quality'' is definitely NOT, so when I think of the likes of Kuhn, Yang, Palma, Holm, Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Welsh, Johnston, Bernardo, there immediately is a huge big whopping NINE First Team squad players who individually & collectively, are the complete antithesis of what ''quality'' looks like & is & as we'll see in our now fast approaching EIGHT CL games.

    Was worried you would never return, great to have you back, the only podcast not ran by happy clappers, that don't let an emotional attachment to players blind you from the data
    I maintain that we will continue to do absolutely nothing in Europe for as long as Callum McGregor is our midfield anchor, he has absolutely no physical or defensive attributes suited to that role within the team, sentiment and dressing room politics with him being captain are the only reasons he continues to play that position week to week
    Please Juco, Alan and Laura, it's the elephant in the room which is constantly neglected on all other Celtic podcasts, too many let emotion for a player blind them from the facts, please once and for all address this topic on your next pod, I know I can count on you guys, do a deep dive into the data and reveal to everyone why continuing with Callum McGregor at CDM, especially in Europe, is a recipe for disaster, it really is the definition of insanity to continue to play him in that position in Europe expecting different results.
    To give you a head start, Bernardo played 200 mins less in the UCL last season compared with McGregor and still won 23 ground duels in comparison to the 8 ground duels McGregor won, Mitchell Frame who played for only 16 mins against Feyenoord won more tackles than McGregor did in 6 UCL games, the madness of Callum McGregor continually being played at CDM needs to finally stop

    • @CatsRUs1888
      @CatsRUs1888 Месяц назад

      I'm gonna add to this to put things into proper perspective, Callum McGregor played 521 mins of UCL football last season, winning 8 ground duels, Iwata played 61 mins of UCL football last season, winning 4 ground duels, so in 460 less UCL minutes than Callum McGregor, Iwata won half the number of ground duels that McGregor won, c'mon, when will sentiment to moved to the side

    • @frankbrennan1619
      @frankbrennan1619 Месяц назад +1

      For sure, Wee Callum played his very best football under Rodgers first time round & yes of course, he was a good few years younger then & playing alongside far better players & not burdened with the Captaincy either & ever since those giddy days, a slow & steady decline, particularly in Europe & then he just went into a frenzied freefall after he was most stupidly & most erroneously, given his current FIVE YEAR deal & now all we have is a Wee Callum in his 32nd year with his very best footballing years all now TOTALLY behind him, save for isolated & sporadic performances at a woeful & dire SPL level & Celtic now going into EIGHT Championship League games a man down but it will ALL be Taylor's & Scales' fault!!

    • @frankbrennan1619
      @frankbrennan1619 Месяц назад

      @@CatsRUs1888 There is also COMPLETELY no ''proper perspective'' from the vast majority of the Celtic support when it comes to Wee Callum's ''performances'' or rather the lack of them & particularly when it comes to playing in Europe & not even even at the very highest level either & of course this is what naturally happens when players are catapulted into some kind of ridiculous & undeserved football deity & so beyond all ''proper perspective'' & so all you will get is the inane drivel of '' aye, he's going through a wee bad patch'' & other such nonsense & we've got four or so more years of this.....

    great to see huddle back on deck,
    a glass half empty scenario re killi for me,
    a good performance and scoreline , looks like a rodgers 2nd pre season has yielded results , lets see what the picture looks like , if mor and hatate depart with their attacking contribution with them .
    killi played mid week, re shuffled unit , yet killi managed 48 transitions into celtic final third off 18% possession, celtic too easy to transition against , lets hope this doesnt come back to haunt celtic this season .
    one observation i would make , re kuhn and forrest who clearly had a speed advantage on the flanks , but i will be surprised if the rest of the league in future will afford such space on the flanks . same thing happened to haksa .
    re mor- once brighton and tony blooms data guys get involved , the brighton effect kicks in , hes as good as gone. the only thing that might prevent this scenario is how you narrow the gap between fsr and celtics valuation.

    Apart from me, quite literally everyone has forgotten it was only just over a year ago that there was an extensive lull of a good few weeks before Rodgers walked back in the front doors of Celtic Park & so much so, huge swathes of the Celtic support doubted it was ever going to happen, as it was well known after his sacking at Leicester City, Rodgers was taking ''a year out'' & had already turned down Crystal Palace & so why on earth would he return to Celtic Park, but the mood from those ''in the know'' meaning they didn't have a clue of course & so just like the rest of us, but those ''in the know'' were repeatedly telling the rest of us not to panic, since shrewd & clever Rodgers was ''thrashing it out'' with the Board & ''seeking assurances'' from them that there would be NO repeats of the John McGinn debacle first time round & that he be given ''a war chest'' of at least £30 million - £40 million so he could take us to '''the next level'' in Europe & sure enough, panic over, Rodgers walks back in the door after signing his own multi - million three year deal & tells us all, particularly the doubters & sceptics, he'll see us '' back here in May'' outside Celtic Park.
    So far so good & then only after a couple of weeks or so into the new season, Rodgers tells us all at his weekly pre-match sit down Press Conference at Celtic Park, that he only ''plays a part'' in the recruitment process & that ultimately his job is to ''coach & develop the players he's PROVIDED WITH'' & so ALL the other stuff I've mentioned by those '' in the know'' is shown to be complete & absolute nonsense, as it always was of course & NOTHING has changed in August 2024 & so just like the rest of us, Rodgers has no idea what new signings are walking in the door before 1130pm on the 30th of August....
