My personal favorite is the In Utero sessions one. It would've fit fine on the album, and I think it's wonderfully recorded too. Excellent production. In Utero is my favorite album of Nirvana, and 2nd favorite album of all time, so having more songs for it is amazing.
Reciprocal is better than Smart Sessions, more intense vocals and rawer. Maybe the In Utero version draws from this more?
The Cobain Residence demo is nice, it's the start of the song after-all. I always love Kurt's acoustic demos, especially on The Elmo Collection fan-boxset.
Smart Sessions is too clean for me. Nevermind isn't a bad album, but it's just too clean and reverby. I don't think the vocals for Smart Sessions are nearly intense enough either.

    And if you save yourself
    You will make him happy
He'll keep you in a jar
    And you'll think you're happy
    He'll give you breathing holes
    And you'll think you're happy
    He'll cover you with grass
And you'll think you're happy now
    You're in a laundry room
    You're in a laundry room
The clues that came to you, oh
    And if you cut yourself
    You will think you're happy
He'll keep you in a jar
    Then you'll make him happy
    He'll give you breathing holes
    Then you'll think you're happy
    He'll cover you with grass
Then you'll think you're happy now
    You're in a laundry room
    You're in a laundry room
The clues that came to you, oh
    You're in a laundry room
    You're in a laundry room
The clues that came to you, oh
    And if you fool yourself
    You will make him happy
He'll keep you in a jar
    Then you'll think you're happy
    He'll give you breathing holes
    Then you will seem happy
    You'll wallow in the shit
Then you'll think you're happy now
    You're in a laundry room
    You're in a laundry room
    You're in a laundry room
The clues that came to you, oh

Ik everyone says some of the recordings are good and that he should’ve settled with one of them. But I wanna hear the way he really wanted sappy to sound, like the whole song in its truest form, that he created.

I think In Utero´s being the last one, is the best because at that time they were better musicians.

Sound City one is the best, imo. Too bad it's blocked on YT.

Cobain laid down his guitar and walked straight into the control room. ‘I don’t want to do this,’ he insisted. ‘I’m not into this song right now. So let’s leave it.’
Is a pretty good version but Kurt didn't want to do it.

@@Astr_umVibes there wasn’t a single version of the song that he can truthfully say he really wanted to do. There’s a reason it had been recorded for every album but didn’t make it on a single one.

While overall I prefer the Smart Sessions, you can absolutely tell the difference between Chad Channing and Dave Grohl's drumming

The Smart Sessions version has kinda of a Spanish feeling, but also feels more calm, for me even though it's not my favorite it's the one I find most interesting

I want to think this is a personal reflection of his mom and dad. Apparently they were not happy and Kurts dad got remarried and Kurts mom gave custody to his dad. Kurt loved his mom the most while his dad was abusive to Kurt, his mom and i think to his sister to. Maybe Kurt wanted to express his own sadness with the song. Especially for the first version in his resodence. Another could be with Courtney. He wanted to love but he got hurt way too many times from her and Kurt wanted to express that version. Kurt was happy with Francis but not with Courtney. Just two good guesses for the songs meaning

it is great song and all versions are enjoyable, arrangment wise i think chads constant notes on ride were pointless and dave improved it, plus he just has more power, basswise i like it when krist deviates from just playing root notes, i think in utero version has some of it. so i think they made it better.
