Fashion Iceberg Challenge, How Deep Does My Knowledge Go?

- Stare long enough into the fashion abyss, and the fashion abyss stares back into you. Into today's egg-citing episode, I take a look at the Fashion Iceberg (challenge) curtesy of Karsten Kroening of @meme_saint_laurent and @vennvzhlv.
Concept is simple enough, at the tip of the iceberg is are the brands everyone knows, but the further you go the more obscure it gets. I take on the challenge to see if I'm a real fashion expert. As you might guess, hijinks ensue and I spend a lot of time debating the placement of each brand (to myself).
LMK if I completely miss-interpret something or what crazy obscure brands you might include.

Hey there! Creator of the tier list here! Im very glad you reviewed it and glad for the criticism provides! Yes, its very European and I will work on improving it and updating further! Thats why current version is 1.2 right now.
The main idea of a tier list was to make less about “obscure mumbo jumbo shit” and more of Resources/Effort/Dedication required to know about a specific brand about finding out information about it, acquiring the actual pieces, and monetary issues. Thats why brands like Dior and Prada are in the middle. Its relatively easy to find a lot of designer interviews and general information + you can get it through second hand or in general stores. But you still need to be dedicated enough to go out of your way to want a Prada shoe/pant/jacket and wear it. While brands like CCP, MA+ or even Walter, require more information gathering and are a bit harder to acquire compared to conventional Prada and Dior.
I know a lot of people will disagree with this tier list, but am still happy that we can agree in some parts! And I wish you all a great day!

I think it was cool
U forgot about Michael kors
tell me about beauty beast pls

20471120 story is pretty interesting. masahiro nakagawa had a dream where in 2047 november 20th a group of people come together to celebrate their inviduality. bro woke up and started a clothing brand.
I saw Christian in person and he wouldn’t stop saying “free Palestine”
as he should. free palestine always

Zara
All other “im different” fashion brands ykwim
And then the darkest tier is Kirkland multipack clothing
feeling like a boss tho, in head to toe cosco
the maison martin margiela part is probably refering to the time when margiela was directing for the house.
yeah I was wondering if maybe I didn't realize the official name of the brand changed after Margiela left
It’s actually referring to before it became an established house and was still independent
i think that some brands are there it means of in depth knowlage and some it means of 'do they know the brand exist'
yeah I think its a combination of knowing the brand and wearing the brand so its not so clean cut
Oh shit, I spent $80k on early 2000’s Raf. I’m not a gift to the world from fashion deities????
as u should
Build an iceberg with everything in your wardrobe
the list seems like it's from a perspective of a european :v, zara and H&M is in every single mall where I live and they are just filled with basics, regular fast fashion
🤥💰
I grew up in small town Middle America so I remember when we FIRST got an H&M back in 2010 or 2011 and it was one of the most exciting times of my youth, I'd only seen pictures of H&M's clothing online and wished the US could at least get stuff shipped here. However, now that I've been to Europe a handful of times, I have been to some H&M's that are just super super basic, but the best one I've ever been to was in Zürich back in 2009, very avant garde menswear, very impressive.
Whats the censoring thing in the intro?
Every time you said “early 20th century Raf Simons” I died a little inside. Early 20th Century would be 1900’s. Otherwise good content, good laughs
what I'm trying to say is that Raf is like, 200 years old and he was designing clothes for the trenches in ww1
@@BraveNewWear WWI Camo was the OG Riot Bomber
Wow, I didn't even know a fashun tier list existed...
I love all sorts of these tier list vids so I'm pretty glad someone like you made this covering one about my favorite hobby.
23:00 He's obviously European he didnt even put levis.
EUROPE ALERT
ever since i've started watching your videos, i look into fashion from a creative/art perspective. I appreciate the beauty of these brands! i hope your can begin your own brand(possibly tier 10 haha)
tier 11 brand the clothes will barely be wearable
Hello Christian once again, awesome video. It has been a long time since you made a video, but after you finally released the video I decided to stop my work just to watch the fashion tier list. Yes I strongly believe the list is biased, but it does make for good humour in our everyday lives.
sorry for the video drought but I'm back friend
Kirkland by Costco is the brand the meets the very top of the ice berg with the very bottom making it full circle and collapses the ice berg into the 7th dimension.
I was glad when u said number nine means that u probably know a little about fashion cuz that’s one of my fav brands (pre 2009).
I’m a producer & I love that Japanese designers blur the lines between music & fashion, simple things like music notes in Number Nine tags. Very sick imo
I would argue that soloist should’ve been moved up a tier. But saying soloist and n(n) should switch places, is absolutely ludicrous. N(n) being Takahiros old brand doesn’t mean anything, at least not when it’s one of the most popular “archive” brands. Just look at how much n(n) there is on the likes of Grailed and JawnFlip.
kapital deserved a place in this iceberg
i honestly love this!
10/10 the tiers were so disorganized and left many brands unlisted that deserved mentioning over others. Not to discredit the person’s knowledge, I just don’t believe they understand how to measure and by what standard they’re measuring. Your reaction to this list was was the right reaction. Lol since you understand art/history, ever thought of making your own tiered list?
Pull&Bear and New Yorker are super common in Europe, in every mall basically
So the first tier is def from a european standpoint
Bless what you said about early 2000s raf lmao
Christian called me a pig and now I’m sad for the whole video :(
But I completely agree that carpe diem, MA+, Guidi and CCP should all be lumped together
😥
damn sorry I ruined the video experience for u
@@BraveNewWear it’s ok. Tears are temporary. Clothes are forever
Thank you for the video fashionable Niel Brennan!
Damn i didnt know people thought that h&m was a bit of a more edgy brand but i promise you it aint. The collabs with fashion houses makes it seem like so but it's not that good
No1 thinks that, I was shocked to hear that opinion lol. H&M has always been known as the most basic brand in my experience.
H&M is edgy to people that wear Hanes and wranglers bro.
Bro realistically more people know abt miyashita’s early work at nn than the soloist
I would have been upset by how menswear heavy this list was... if it wasn’t so poorly made
that sort of iceberg would be nuts, especially with the amount of womenswear brands there are compared to mens... There would need to be guidelines like, does it have to be region specific? Time/era specific?
you actually should look into 20471120 and Beauty:Beast really cool stuff
my fav brands
hard to find info on tho, we've all searched Beauty:Beast and found ourselves looking at Disney World merch

oh fuck I remember that meme
this was .... quite entertaining lol
I had no idea Raf was working in the early twentieth century!
Was it based on just knowledge of the brand or importance of the designer/brand because if its the latter i say helmut, rick, rei, raf, Yohji, martin....etc. definitely most important just cause thats stuff you'll actually see people in on the street everyday. They've all become "trendy" but they all kinda exposed higher end clothing to the everyday person but also had the wild side for when you wanna get really saucy...IMO
idk why I got some hypebeast energy from the tier list
This intro was hilarious
respect for putting the rick runway pic 13:28
Maybe I shouldnt have bc the advertisers are gonna cancel me
I would love to see an American one and an European list bc I’m from the north of England and other than thrifting and a few boutiques the fashion scene is pretty dead which sucks
I've been trying to find that Rei Taschen book for awhile where did you buy it??
I've seen it many times at The Strand in NYC, just south of Union Square, I would try maybe calling them to see if they can ship it to you. Also, there's one here on ebay, www.ebay.com/itm/184860295167?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
IS and CDG in the abyss is crazy 😂, is this person living in a different dimension? I've seen so many people wearing the iconic Miyaku pleets & CDG heart con's it's almost becoming more accessible than public toilets 🤔
I really liked this video. And I agree with your changes completely. Dior is known more than gucci and other fashion houses because of those horrible dior Jordan's. Same with Prada and adidas.
Cool interpretation, but I think that it is kind of weird with Martine Rose and Balenciaga. Martine Rose was in someway involved to help Demna with the men's Balenciaga line.
feeling extra pig like today. thanks, Christian.
np pay pig thanks for showing up
Oh...😶...maybe one day I'll be able to dip my toe into the third level...Lord willing...🙏🏼💯✔
I put my whole wallet into decking out in full FOG and I only refer to the pieces as 'by J Lorenzo'. All that to be put into tier 3!?! Ugh
early-Raf take is on point
I think with Rafs work, his old clothes are more approachable NOW because we've caught up / he has shaped the modern aesthetic
Maison Martin Margiela = when Martin himself was in the brand.
Maison Margiela = contemporary stuff I guess?
Damn man I know every single one of these
That means ur enlightened basically
@@BraveNewWear I actually wear Heliot Emil
Wouldnt the deepest be tayloring your own outfits?
I think making mmm and maison margiela ar put in different places because martin left and the label became more accessible cus of galliano
yeah I figure thats whats up, idk If Galliano is more accessible, hes for sure pretty weird, but the brand has certainly become more commercial
great video
2:58 new Yorker is a fashion store like h&m (+ with bad bootlegs)
Okay I get the vintage military gear craze but I think literally no one is copping a 1700s british red coat to throw on and cruise the town with. Seems weird to put at the bottom.
speak for yourself
Cropp had amazing quality in 2007 or so, i still have some items to this day. Sadly, it's always been super skater/streetwearish and now their quality is much worse, but still higher than Zara/H&M. Cropp used to be made in Poland.
Beauty:beast is so good
looked for this
Gezzz there is a lot for me to learn but my state’s fashion is super basic and I’m tried of seeing poses in car parking lot. 💀🔫
dude you are hilarious
also, this is kind of a meme, i dont't think this is supposed to "rank" those brands, it's just ranking people wearing it from like an outside perspective, like the lower you go, the "darker" and more "obscure" it gets, dk how to explain it.....at least i guess im not sure it could be fr.You're probably too invested into fashion and really have a lot of knowledge about a lot of those designers to actually find this tier any funny.
Surprised u didn’t rly say much ab ERD lol
“Em-across”
0 10 Margiela is definitely end of the spectrum tier.
Hello there ! Stumbled upon your video as a fellow enthusiast myself (former makeup artist, used to work in fashion and film), and I must say as a European (French lol)... This iceberg is... Not the most accurate I'd say? I agree with you that Dior and Chanel belong in the same tier, but some other fashion houses and creators are misplaced? 🤔
Thanks for your video on this, certainly gave me food for thought! :D
Ok and why is Iris Van Herpen so low on this iceberg?! xD
I get her designs are eerie and all, but I feel you can at least appreciate the "orfèvrerie" and the thought process behind the pieces. It's wearable art for the runway, sure, not so much to go get groceries xD... But come on! haha
Almost all of my clothes are 4th tier
My knowledge is a 7 but my style is 2 cuz I got no money to buy me some archive
bro said hes gonna buy archive
ok can someone explain COS to me, isn't it h&m so should I dislike it or is it like the uniqlo u of h&m. idk if its based or not yall. my brain sees h&m and labels it bad but shit bro
the way i understand their relationship is that COS is under H&M but they operate separately and have different headquarters
the new yoker is a European fast fashion shop, ironic given the name
Whats up with the weird blur rectangle in the first minute? He livin his own life lol
Burberry is as much a fashion house as Gucci or Versace.. based on your reasoning, the same could go for a girl with a Gucci or LV handbag in high school..
I'm into fashion fashion for real and Burberry's collections.. like runway items go for as much, if not more than, Givenchy, Gucci or Versace and is even harder to get at retailers. Many more retailers offer brands like Balenciaga, Versace, Givenchy that don't even carry Burberry, Dior, or LV..
In all honesty.. there just needs to be like 1 or 2 more tiers.. too many brands and labels.. and crossovers with some. Supreme is easily tier 2 if not tier 1, depending on what you buy, along with brands like Stussy, Chinatown Market, Guess, Carhartt WIP, Neighborhood, Ice Cream, BBC. A Supreme shirt can go for as low as a Nike T or Gap T at retail. Its the resale numbers that bloat it. and then there's the collabs they have that expand their prices as well. Brands like C.P Company and Heron Preston would be around each other where as Stone Island would be Closer to Off-White.. But Moncler should def be a tier down as well as Balmain.. no where near TNF
Even newer brands like Palm Angels or Amiri can tread into older fashion houses' domain like Balmain or D&G and vice versa. I own Balmain shirts that teeter more on the streetwear spectrum and there is Amiri items that look very very high fashion.
I def wouldn't put MSGM in the same Boat as D&G AT ALL.. MSGM is closer to GCDS, Emporio Armani, Kenzo, CDG Play, Hugo Boss, Maison Kitsuné, Kith and Helmut Lang (which is waaay lower than it should be). Saks off 5th sells Helmut Lang at like 70% off as well as Cavali and Karl Lagerfeld lol..
Id say DKNY, French Connection, Polo Ralph Lauren would fit in that same group as well.. depending if you're buying foreign vs domestic
D&G should be in the fashion houses with Versace and Gucci.
Then theres brands like Phillip Plein, Kenzo, Lanvin, Dsquared2, Moschino, BAPE, Ami Paris, Aimé Leon Dore, Human Made/ Dryalls etc that I didn't even see on the list at all. Brands like Casablanca, C.P. Company, Stone Island cant be overlooked either..
Bruh what's going on with that blur box?
Jokes on you im born the year of the pig 🐷 oink oink
