  • Riley Greene's debut season hasn't been short on memorable moments, and he added another with an electric lead off home run against the incomparable Shohei Ohtani while putting together a 13-game hit streak. But Greene wasn't the only Tigers rookie to impress the home crowd in recent weeks. Ryan Kreidler made an immediate impact upon seeing his big league dreams come true.

Like a lot of people, I think I probably had special thoughts about Riley Greene when he robbed a guy of a homer in that intrasquad game at Comerica during the eventual shortened season in 2020. I thought, ''Hmm, Kaline used to do that kind of thing All the time when I was a kid in the 1950s.'' When he was called up, I began to notice other things. He could hit a homer, but he was also winning games with singles or SFs. In the field, he was tracking down fly balls up against the fence, but he was also fearless in diving for bloopers out of the reach of infielders. I'm not saying Greene's going to be a Hall of Famer. At this stage, it's too difficult to predict and it's also totally unfair to Riley to put THAT kind of pressure om him. But I'm 75 years old, a former sports writer who covered the Tigers in the 1970s and I've read that Al Kaline was dazzled by Greene when he saw him in camp. There are some who will say, ''He only hit in the .250s last year. This is true, but I beg of the metrics boys to check out Kaline's first season. It was similar. Then in 1955, Al became the youngest batting champ in the history of the American League. I'm not predicting a batting title for Riley this year. However, I think his detractors will be dazzled by him, just as Kaline was before he died.

The Tigers could start every inning with runners on first and second and still get shut out. The strikeouts with runners on are atrocious.

I agree, Brian. It IS exasperating! And, I'm sure there will be some who think Scott Harris didn't do anything to improve the team this winter. But take a look at the players he did acquire and almost all of them had good batting profiles, average to high OBPs and the desire to take pitches until the right one comes along. Harris has totally revamped the coaches and the teachers in the system to FINALLY modernize the Tigers. The rebuild has been painful and it's going to continue for a while. But with new coaching, we're going to start to see results in a couple of years.
