    Great job Vasilis! I've played clarinet with Macedonians for nearly 50 years, mostly for folks from south western Macedonia and from Aegean Macedonia (Lerinsko/Florina area). I've always loved the music and dance. You've done a great job presenting it. I am always glad to see how much those of us from the Balkans have in common with the people we lived among and next to.

      The facts as they are...
      Ohrid is a very old Bulgarian city located in nowadays North Macedonia!
      Unfortunately, this ancient and so pure Bulgarian city, detached from the fatherland in 1913, but still bearing that majestic Revival architecture of the Bulgarians of that period with their struggle for liberation from Turkish Slavery, no longer looked the same!
      Completely flooded by Albanians and having lost its unique charm and Orthodox splendor, it has become a small caliphate, where from the high minarets you can hear the singing of the Hodja:
      Welcome to North Macedonia, a land of mosques, ajvar and brainwashed people with lost identity and turbo-folk mentality.

      When politicians are not involved, people on both sides of the border understand each other perfectly.
      With no translator, no myths, legends and lies, because the language they speak is one, the same as the people themselves!

      Let me tell you something...
      Politics and diplomacy can be compromised, but with history and the facts in it, we cannot make any compromises!
      In the history of the Bulgarians from the Macedonian region, thousands of young people have died, all concerned and loving their kin and fatherland.
      They all longed to live, but freely and united in Free Mother Bulgaria.
      Hence comes the two popular expressions of the Bulgarians written in golden letters in their history:
      "Freedom or Death"
      &
      "Unity makes Strength"

    I am an Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jew, and just listening to the clarinet intro to this video, it is clear how much our folk music, Klezmer, is Balkan. I've always wondered why this is, since we were mostly in Western and Eastern Slavic countries in which the folk music is a lot different. It would be interesting for an ethnomusicologist to provide an answer as to why Jewish music is more Balkan than say, Polish or Belarussian/Russian/Ukrainian. We had a whole Klezmer set at my wedding. Our dancing was not nearly this good, though! Except for one of my brothers, who is actually a good dancer. Your dancing, Mr. Petropoulos is amazing; you must be in amazing shape! I first starting watching your videos when I coincidentally came across one of your Assyrian dance medleys. I speak Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, in addition to my family language, Hebrew. Greetings from Connecticut, USA.

    • @TheWillystyla
      @TheWillystyla Год назад

      I mean Balkan music itself is an mix of ancient south European music and oriental Anatolian middle eastern music… it’s hard to say why but probably because of the influence of Arabic music in Spain and the roots of the Jews

      You see, this clown has no respect for democratic values and of signed treaties referring to the Prespa agreement of the name North Macedonia.
      They will always provoke Greece and impose claims on the northern region of Greece, which is the only original true historical Macedonia..
      The reason why there will NEVER be peace In the balkans.
      And why Greece must transform the Greek army with a Spartan military mentality.
      These are all Greek haters and must be treated as such.

I only found this version of the song in this mix by a Macedonian Folklore group called „Tanec“: ruclips.net/video/OBFIFMTES18/видео.htmlsi=4QPjaikf5spCLPIQ. "When a person from Macedonia lives in Bulgaria longer, he/she realizes that in fact the mood towards us is very friendly and cordial in Bulgaria.
      All Bulgarians accept us as their own!
      Everything here reminds me of my home.
      And the old houses in Nessebar and Sozopol have the same architecture as those in Ohrid with their old and so revival style.
      The difference between us is only in the mentality of some people from Macedonia, who have been still stuck somewhere in the times of Yugoslavia and living with the notions of the Bulgarians as some Tatars, Fascists and Occupiers."
      These are the thoughts of the construction entrepreneur Miroslav Traichevski/Мирослав Трайчевски from Kriva Palanka, who has lived in Sofia for 13 years and is developing his successful business there.
      God bless all Bulgarians in the motherland and North Macedonia!

      so true, nationalism is mind-numbingly moronic. there is no such thing as a "legitimate state" because national borders are all just made up. it's sad that people let what governments decided in the past dictate their sense of identity, and use some false idea of ethnic superiority as their source of unearned pride. i wish the chauvinists would realize that none of this really matters today and they can simply enjoy the rich history and folklore of this region without dividing people based on stupid fascist propaganda.

      @makedonkakosturska8919 3 года назад +6

      Every region has its own dances which the region is known for, the costumes are easy to distinguish too. Every city/town/village is unique but it shares the same Macedonian spirit. Are you from that region?

    • @petergriffinmk2884
      @petergriffinmk2884 3 года назад +10

      It depends on the region. Eastern Macedonia has a lot of Slavic influences from Bulgaria and Serbia and they mainly use the accordion, drums, flute, and bagpipes. Western Macedonia where I am from has a lot of Muslim influences from Macedonian Muslims, Albanians, and Turks and we use the zurna, drums, clarinet, and flute. South Macedonia ,including bitola and ohrid, has greek influences and uses a lot of clarinet and drums. Central Macedonia also has a lot of Turkish influence and they are famous for Macedonian Chalgija music (very Ottoman sounding music). Skopje is a mix of everything PLUS Romani influences (Gypsy music) and Turkish influences. Basically, Macedonian music is the perfect representation of all Balkan music in one.
