    Greetings guitarsenal wielding #guitargeek and welcome to the totally tubular Tuesday now known as Acoustic Tuesday!
    Without any hesitation, let's knock out 5 items for your #guitargeek radar...
    A classic #guitargeek problem... too many instruments and not enough space. Welcome to the world of the Hercules triple stand. This is a great stand that I have used on countless gigs. It holds three instruments and is adjustable to accommodate differing heights of various instruments. I have used this to hold my banjo, dobro, and guitar at a gig and it works fantastically. It has a weight activated instrument yoke to avoid missteps and accidents and is built like a tank. They don't name these things after a Greek God for nothing. If you are looking for something for your guitar den or a stage stand for a jam, this is one that should definitely be in the running.
    So it's official I received my second shipment from Tiptonic picks containing the actual fingernail picks. After getting my first shipment with the activator and sizing chart, I sized my fingernails with the included sizing chart and went forth with the order. They came in and I ripped open the box to find a nice circular shaped organizer, nail file, and comprehensive instructions. After trying them on and giving them a spin I would definitely say anyone who likes to pick with their fingernails would certainly benefit from them. There is some time involved with the sizing, but it is time well spent. Once you get a solid fit, activate the pick, and apply it; it really feels like part of your nail... and the best part they come off and can be put on again after another activation. I was skeptical that they would come off cleanly but lo and behold they did, and once I got used to the feel of them I really started to enjoy having the picks on. Quick note: the instructions that come with them are comprehensive so definitely read them before putting the picks on.
    This week I have a sonic treat for you, presented in the form of what I'm listening to. This week I want to feature an artist that is really out fo this world... Antoine Dufour. Antoine is most certainly in the modern fingerstyle category and he is an outlier in my opinion. His playing is off the charts. From the innovative melodies to the unique percussive patterns he integrates, Antoine's repertoire is wide-ranging and extremely dynamic. His knack for creating memorable melodies is his strong suit and he follows that up with rhythmic rollercoasters. All in all, Antoine is someone you need to be aware of as he is very clearly pushing the boundaries of what a single acoustic guitar can do.
    American Music Furniture Cabinets
    To see a fine specimen of an acoustic guitar in its natural guitar habitat is a thing of beauty... a rare sight, but when witnessed it is inspiring. American Music Furniture actually makes that very thing; A humidity-controlled guitar habitat. It not only safeguards your instruments from fluctuations in humidity, it also puts them on display in a very elegant way. The cabinets are made from solid hardwoods and can be custom built and tailored to your very own instrument collection. If you want to lock your instruments in place they offer the "neck-tie" system so your instruments will be nice and secure. Oh, and speaking of humidity, your guitar habitat can contain a humidifier or dehumidifier depending on your location. The slick thing about the humidifier area is that it is hidden yet easy to access so your instruments can be healthy and happy all the while maintaining a super clean aesthetic. These are a truly beautiful way to store your instruments for everyone to see and enjoy all the while keeping them safe and sound.
    Back on Acoustic Tuesday Episode 23, I asked a very specific question to Andy Powers regarding Taylor's new V series bracing. I was confused and curious about the notion of bracing effecting the intonation of a guitar and was hoping to gain some clarity. So I asked Andy If he would send me a cell phone video explaining the impact. Well, I am happy to report that not only did he send a video, he also invited me out to the factory to discuss the racing in person. More details on the Acoustic Tuesday episode so be sure to check that out for all the juicy details of the Taylor V Series Saga.
    Yet another Acoustic Tuesday has been set up and knocked down all with your guitar geek help!!! I hope this week finds you strumming and smiling!!!
    Until next week happy pickin'!!!
    Cheers,
    Tony

    So Andy explained his marketing speak with more marketing speak and other assorted mumbo jumbo. Gotcha’. My main guitar is a 000-18GE with no obvious intonation issues... uncompensated saddle and all.
    Andy’s video sounds like he’s saying “Depends what the definition of ‘is’ is.”
    Still waiting for Taylor’s great maple awakening to spread. Won’t hold my breath.

      Andy Powers' video was so annoying, it makes me want to buy a Taylor even less. (Although, I confess to owning one - my 12-string.) It was a perfectly grating and uninformative combination of arrogance, marketing consultant gobbledygook, and new age true believer spirituality. And I don't buy that a bracing system will magically fix the compromises that go into guitar intonation -- at least not without an actual explanation better than "we just wouldn't understand."

      Have you played a V class since you made this comment? Bottom line is you just have to play one. The differences are minor, but they are 100 percent there. Marketing aside you just have to hear it. I own a V class Taylor and two Martins and love both brands so I have no bias between the two. The V class benefits they claim are legitimate, but it's just not as "night and day" as many people are expecting it to be.

    Up for sale: Taylor 414 CE, 30th. Anniversary. Would like to get a little money out of it before I decide to use it for firewood.
    All kidding aside, I found a guy that re-fired my passion for music, and his style is the "Percussive style," not going to mention any names because i'm unsure of the legalities, but suffice it to say, the guy you featured is the one that made me think about firewood!
    That being said, my guitar seems to ring once each string is coming into tune. I've never experienced this in my life, and hope this makes sense. This guitar has a voice.
    When I started shopping for higher quality acoustics I was looking at all the usual suspects, and after playing countless guitars, and probably pissing off more than a few floor Reps. off, I decided on this beautiful Taylor.
    It's a beautiful sounding instrument, and one day I hope to make her sing!

    I’m late to this party, but just wanted to say something about the finger pick subject. I don’[t mean to dis the product at all, BUT I’ve been having acrylic fingernails done at the local salon for 30 years, and the nails have opened up a whole world of finger picking. About 40 years ago I tried to study classical guitar, but it didn’t work out well because my natural nails are so weak and they break and tear back to the quick so easily it is painful. Acrylic nails were not available at that time. I still learned great classical guitar technique - right and left hands but my sound was poor because of the nail issue. Several years later once I started getting the acrylics done I picked up my guitars - classical and steel string acoustics - and had a whole new world of finger style playing. I like to “fine tune” the tips of my acrylics so as to get a great sound when picking. Also, I have found that picking with a combination of nail and finger tip gives a nice warm tone.
    So for those pickers who have trouble with their picking hand nails, think about getting acrylics. They work great and they don’t have a problem coming off.

    I am glad you ask that question about intonation. Because i have been critical of Taylor using that term....but when you look up the most popular definition of the word 'intonation' you will see that Taylor is using it somewhat correctly in that it is the "pitch pattern of a melody" or from Taylor perspective the ability to hear the "pitch pattern of a melody".....basically clarity. Guitar players typically use the work as "in tune"...intonation...(which is further down the definition list)....and that is where i am critical as i still don't see how bracing helps this later definition of intonation. So i am interested to hear the fuller explanation (or my advise to Taylor...drop that word in describing the new bracing). Regardless of word-smithing i am sure the new V braces will sound great.

    • @zvonimirtosic6171
      @zvonimirtosic6171 6 лет назад

      V-bracing messes up the timing. It allows guitar top to vibrate a bit quicker after the strum, which has tremendous consequences to an overall tonal picture. Lows, which traditionally come last, are enticed to come faster, highs too, and - at the surface - tone shapes itself faster. That is what Taylor uses as an excuse for "in - tonation" - in their language, "the tone appears to shape itself faster into a correct shape", BUT, it is not entirely correct sound picture. Lows come too fast, and mids are swallowed up in between. Resulting tone is different than traditional, louder, projects farther away. It is not typical acoustic guitar sound picture anymore, although the instrument may look very similar.
      So the intonation of these instruments, compared to traditional instruments, is in fact - totally incorrect intonation if we use correct meaning of the word that musicians use. The tone IS different than before, vastly. We have an exact same issue with newer lattice bracing in a classical guitar - those instruments do not sound same as traditional instruments, although the sound forms "quicker".

    Andy immediately takes his "explanation" down to nit-picking over the precise meaning of words... total cop out. I'm not convinced.

  • @thomaschamberlin2485
    @thomaschamberlin2485 6 лет назад

    Andy gives the long-winded version about intonation in the Winter Wood & Steel article so you might read it before going to California. He says sitars have movable frets so you can change the frets for every key. Guitar settled for what is called equal temperament tuning, basically close enough. All V-class bracing is doing is removing the harmonic overtones that effect the pure notes, especially when playing thirds and chord inversions. I always thought some harmonic overtones were good so it will be interesting to play the new guitars and see what was sacrificed.

    #smallwin This one was a dawning small win. I've always had trouble moving for open chords to bar chords. Every time when making the transition it would always momentarily pause my chord progression. I was improving on holding a bar and even shifting up the neck to a similar shaped chord with no dull strings etc, but open to bar chord, just no. So, I have no idea when it started to happen, but as I'm watching the small wins portion of AT25 I'm thinking "I wish I had one too" then I realize that I'm switching seamlessly between open G to a full F chord to an open C back to a full F (playing Iron & Wine's Resurrection Fern). And while I was aware I was doing it, I just don't remember when it got easier...it just is now :D

    I’m very late to this party, but I just have to make a comment about the finger picks. Years ago I studied classical guitar, but it doesn’t last long because my natural nails are so weak that I couldn’t play properly and had to quit the lessons. BOOO!! Fast forward to present day. With the advent of acrylic nails I began to have my nails done with acrylics. I do have to fine tune the nails in order to get the tonal response and dynamics I want to incorporate into my playing of classical and steel string acoustic guitar, but I do love the acrylics and I don’t have to deal with the press-on nails. The acrylics last about 2 weeks for me, and they absolutely do not come loose or break. Try the acrylics, you’ll love ‘em.

    "V" bracing was originally designed by Tee Guitars in the Netherlands in 2012 . Looks like Taylor's attorney did not do their due diligence when looking for prior art. Taylor's patent could be invalidated by this major mistake on their part.

    Tony, just a bit of constructive feedback. Your show has plenty of potential for being solid and successful. I attribute this to the format, ideas, and your knowledge. This is the the first episode I’ve seen. My concern is that it is much too heavy on self-promotion(subscribe, email, podcast, tell friends, etc...), and there’s too much fluff and not enough content. When you look at this episode, extract the time when there’s an actual review (artist, gear, etc...) and the Andy Powers video response, and if you add up that time vs. the time spent promoting and just adding filler, you will understand my point. Just my .02 ¢. All the best.

    I've built two harpsichords, played amateur guitar all my life, and played professionally in orchestra as oboist for forty years. Anyone who has a hard opinion about intonation might as well tour the MOMA by looking through the keyhole of the main door. Intonation is a combination of science, art, and the supernatural. It is the simplest and most complex thing in a musician's life. Perfect intonation is your 8 year old twin daughters singing Silent Night in thirds. Analyze that. If Andy sounds like market speak, well, consider the market. As for me, I'm going to try the V class.

    Tony! Congrats on getting Andy to respond. Here's a test you can do with Andy on hand and cameras on. Take an X-braced 2017 914ce and a new 2018 V braced 914ce, connect them to a quality tuner like a strobe tuner and then test every note on the fretboard... This painstaking process will be extremely boring to watch (maybe time-lapse it into 10 seconds) but the results will settle this for good... When you total and average the fretted pitch to expected correct pitch offet you'll get a number that you can derive a percentage from to say the new 914ce is say 5% more accurate in intonation than the X-braced 914ce... To do the experiment properly you'd need at minimum three of each 914ce to settle the normal variation guitar to guitar, but I think the results of this test is something we'd like to see.

    Strange that you would be sceptical about maple use in guitars. It has been a mainstay material for acoustic instrument building for centuries. Many of the best sounding guitars I've experienced have had maple bodies. This includes my current favorite, a Loar, and many of the sought after L series Gibsons it is a copy of. (p.s. If you get one of these, pre-play the one you buy. I haven't seen any bad ones, but according to internet forums some cheaper models got shipped out with a poorly set neck.)

    I love Taylor guitars, I own three and they are not cheap. I’m pretty sure in the UK we pay more for these guitars than those in the USA. But I hope that Andy Powers stops inventing marketing ploys to try and hook ppl in to buying the new improved versions of the same guitars they have already. It’s a slap in the face for those that have already purchased them and in all honesty that V-Bracing specifically on the 812ce 12-fret sounds a lot worse that the x-bracing and I’m far from being alone on that assessment. I’m starting to look at other builders now just because I feel Andy Powers is fos sometimes.

    #smallwin I've been playing guitar with fingernails for 14 years now and I have been intrigued by Tiptonic since researching alternate finger pick options for an innovation course at school. I was skeptical and did nothing, but as a nurse and nursing student, I desperately need to find a reliable option in order to maintain strict asepsis while in hospital settings. Having had a reliable voice, like Tony, giving these picks an honest review and stating they are truly effective, means I will be placing my order soon. Thanks for all you three do, keep it up!
    #question Tony, could you please show/tell me how much natural nail is needed for a good fit of Tiptonic picks?
    #askMatt Matt, I am nearing a point where I would like to purchase a high end, boutique guitar. I have a very strong knowledge of all appointments I would like to incorporate however, I would like your take on whether having a pickup system in a guitar takes away from the integrity and overall tone of the woods? Is it better to mic or use a temporary pickup and if so, any suggestions in that department?

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  6 лет назад

      Eric, Great question!!! As I said in the show it is important to take your time with the fitting of the picks so in terms of how much nail is necessary I would say roughly 1/16" or maybe a hair more. You just need enough nail to catch the ledge on the underside of the pick. If you have any questions about fitting you can always reach out to the folks at Tiptonic they were a great help to me. I hope this helps :-)

    • @zvonimirtosic6171
      @zvonimirtosic6171 6 лет назад +1

      The answer is indeed ridiculous. V-bracing allows that top of the guitar wakes up a bit quicker, projects highs and lows way faster than normal. Mids are stifled in between and there is no enough of them to shape the correct tonal picture because lows are coming too fast. We have seen and heard that same problem with lattice bracing on a classical guitar, and it results in same issues. The result is a louder sound, overwhelming, unfit for smaller rooms. And the guitar starts sounding like some other instrument. For an acoustic guitar to sound properly, the sound stage composed of highs, mids and lows must be constructed with each coming at a correct time, but the V-bracing (and lattice bracing on a classical) destroys traditional timing.

    • @halfglassfull
      @halfglassfull 6 лет назад

      Zvonimir Tosic Excellent response - there's the trouble - you state it succinctly as I could not put my finger on what I was experiencing!!!! I've been out shopping for one and I really wanted the v-bracing to be great. I own Martins and Yamahas and always wanted a Taylor for fingerstyle so have been trying out 414ceR , 814ce, Deluxe and none have sounded that good to my ear. Yes loud and direct but lack warmth. And the 814ce deluxe I tried was a complete mess, noisey string slap and even sounded like it had intonation issues mid-neck - and i carry a tuner with me to check especially since part of the pitch is "solving the intonation problem". Given each one is hand built and bad ones do slip through. I noticed one store offering the an 814ce with x bracing they wanted 20% MORE than for the new model. Looks like they bet the farm on v-bracing.

  • @JScottDaniels

    Powers is exactly right; intonation is about "in tuneness". The dictionary states it as, "accuracy of pitch in playing singing, or on a stringed instrument such as a guitar."

    I thought Andy would spill this week, but it will have to wait until you get with him face to face. Remember...you heard it here first... Last week I talked about harmonics as a result of overtones and the alignment of said overtones. So Andy wants you to modify the definition of "intonation". Yep. It's about harmonics. Harmonics within the guitar's body, particularly the top. Just as you can modify the intonation of the strings by shortening or lengthening string length, even ever so slightly, when you move the bracing you change the way the top vibrates. Consequently you can create a top that vibrates in sympathy with the strings' vibrations or place it in a way that conflicts and competes with strings' vibrations. Ergo, harmony or chaos that contribute to the aural experience and perception of being "in tune". Waiting to see if Andy confirms my thesis.

    Taylor's V-bracing turns out to have been invented six years prior to Taylor by a Belgium luthier in living in the Netherlands
    From the Netherlands guitar forum www.gitaarnet.nl, posted in 2012!
    www.gitaarnet.nl/forum/showthread.php?153871-A-B-C-of-X-Y-Z-bracing&p=2819907&viewfull=1#post2819907
    It is in Dutch so use Google Translate or Babbel to convert to the language you need.
    The owner of Teeje Guitars is from Belgium now living in the Netherlands.
    The patent request was filed by Taylor in 2015 and granted in Dec 2016 is well after the referenced Dutch guitar forum design that was publicly disclosed in 2012.
    There is only one independent claim in the patent and it is written as broadly as the applicant could get the patent office to approve. The only requirement is the their is at least one or more fan braces touch the longitudinal braces.
    1. A guitar top comprising: a sound hole; a neck end configured to attach to a guitar neck having a longitudinal axis; a heel end; and a transverse axis normal to the longitudinal axis; wherein a bottom surface of the guitar top includes a pair of longitudinal braces attached to the Surface, the pair of longitudinal braces extending primarily along the longitudinal axis from the heel end toward the neck end and terminating at a point beyond the sound hole toward the neck end, wherein each of the pair of longitudinal braces is positioned on an opposing side of the Sound hole Such that a distance between the longi tudinal braces exceeds the diameter of the sound hole, and wherein the longitudinal braces are oriented Such that the distance between the pair of longitudinal braces is greater toward the neck end than the heel end; and one or more fan braces extending primarily along the transverse axis, wherein at least one of the one or more fan braces terminates at one of the pair of longitudinal braces.
    The core of Andy Powers invention had been disclosed prior to Tay;or Guitars filing for the patent.
    I believe the forum disclosure of that drawing of a guitar braced that way invalidates claim 1 based on Novelty; Prior Art.
    (a)Novelty; Prior Art.-A person shall be entitled to a patent unless-
    (1)the claimed invention was patented, described in a printed publication, or in public use, on sale, or otherwise available to the public before the effective filing date of the claimed invention; or
    (2)the claimed invention was described in a patent issued under section 151, or in an application for patent published or deemed published under section 122(b), in which the patent or application, as the case may be, names another inventor and was effectively filed before the effective filing date of the claimed invention.
    (b)Exceptions.-
    (1)Disclosures made 1 year or less before the effective filing date of the claimed invention.-A disclosure made 1 year or less before the effective filing date of a claimed invention shall not be prior art to the claimed inventionunder subsection (a)(1) if-
    (A)the disclosure was made by the inventor or joint inventor or by another who obtained the subject matter disclosed directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor; or
    (B)the subject matter disclosed had, before such disclosure, been publicly disclosed by the inventor or a joint inventor or another who obtained the subject matter disclosed directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor.
    (2)Disclosures appearing in applications and patents.-A disclosure shall not be prior art to a claimed invention under subsection (a)(2) if-
    (A)the subject matter disclosed was obtained directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor;
    (B)the subject matter disclosed had, before such subject matter was effectively filed under subsection (a)(2), been publicly disclosed by the inventor or a joint inventor or another who obtained the subject matter disclosed directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor; or
    (C)the subject matter disclosed and the claimed invention, not later than the effective filing date of the claimed invention, were owned by the same person or subject to an obligation of assignment to the same person.
    Looks like the USPTO was not aware of the Belgian/Dutch prior art when it approved the patent. Taylor may still have an issue enforcing the patent if any defendant or employees of Taylor Guitars were aware of this prior art - which i’m sure as happened …
    From the Taylor PR www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/v-class-bracing/story (bold italics mine)...
    "Why hasn’t anyone thought of V-Class bracing before?
    This may be an impossible question to answer, since we can’t know why someone didn’t think of something. But in reflecting on how he conceived of the V-Class design, Andy credits the treasure trove of books and other information resources provided by builders, guitar repair technicians, writers, players and others who have shared their many discoveries about acoustic sound, woodworking, and instrument making over several centuries. Andy’s natural passion and curiosity led him to consume as many of these resources as he could find, which certainly helped inform his thinking about guitar design and synthesize these ideas into something new. His experiences and musical needs as a pro-level player also influenced his thinking. Andy also credits the innovative manufacturing culture of Taylor Guitars, which has provided a supportive environment and tooling resources for ongoing design improvements. Taylor’s production capability also has enabled guitars to be built with incredible precision and on a large scale. This has allowed Andy to explore the outer frontiers of guitar design, push the proverbial envelope, and discover the limitations of existing materials and methods."
    / message
    Taylor Guitars owns an important facility in Amsterdam where they do the distribution, warranty repair and setting up work their European guitars owners.
    It's not unlikely at all then, that someone in their staff may have seen that drawing...Was Andy Powers aware of the idea when he started working on his own V bracing is an other question..
    I see the layout as an existing public domain "idea" that has had many variations {just look at old arch tops, many have “V” bracing struts} and it would only be Taylor’s SPECIFIC details that at least one or more fan braces touch the longitudinal braces apply to their patent.
    Taylor does indeed have a patent on the design of Tee (see www.freepatentsonline.com/9520108.pdf ), but since Tee has already posted the design in 2012, that patent is now likely to be invalidated. So I predict that a lot of manufacturers will soon come out with V-bracing.
    I still have a substantive question to the guitar builders here. I see one potential problem (maybe) about this policy. I only made guitars with X-bracing, where the glued side of the X was always slightly rounded. As a result, you also force the top plate around the bridge section into a slight bulge, in all directions, which in my firm conviction benefits the sound. With this V-bracing the bulging can only be made in the longitudinal direction. I would therefore expect that from the left to the right there will be some bumps in the top, due to lack of sufficient

    Every time I listen to the modern fingerstyle guitarists, I wind up missing the overall tune because I'm trying to listen to where everything is coming from......so to properly hear the song, best to keep my eyes closed.....and try to NOT picture what he or she are doing for a couple minutes. They do amaze me. I like Taylor for a lot of things, but "Change for Changes sake" is not one of those....nice to experiment with new things, and they surely have the money, but be sure it is positive or has a group it will benefit, otherwise, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. I love the way Maple looks, but never liked the sound at all unless it was a 12 string tuned down a full tone, but one thing Bob Taylor said that makes so much sense is we all hear things differently, so buy the guitar that your ears tell you is great sounding and feels right in your hands.....not necessarily the one that your idol uses. That black handled screwdriver that is not seated properly in Andy's workshop...on the top row is bothering the hell out of me. I hope it has been fixed since this video.

    On the finger picks. I work in a manly man environment in the maintenance department of a power plant. I can't have long fingernails for two reasons. One, the first and foremost reason, is that they would get broken so fast it would make your head spin working on pumps, valves, piping etc. Not to mention the dirt, grime, and grease that would collect underneath of them. The second reason being that I would get laughed at and ridiculed endlessly. Power plant guys are not known for political correctness as you can probably imagine. I would get ridden like a show pony for having long fingernails and ridden even harder for showing up to work with "stick on" nails!! So that being said, you allude to, in your review, but don't come right out and say that these are easy to install and remove on a daily basis or at least on a regular basis so that I can work with my hands during the day and use these to practice at night. Is that correct?
    Next, as far as the triple guitar stand. Do you have one behind you in this video behind your right shoulder? That would be behind you and to the left of the screen for us viewers.

      The Tiptonics are easy to apply and remove, however they take some time to size, but it is time very well spent. Getting a proper fit is essential for your success with the picks. Putting them on is as easy as activating them (heating) for 5 or so minutes, and then applying. To remove you slowly pull the pick off and then place back in the activator until next heating. I hope that helps :-)

    • @motexan129

      AcousticLife.tv Hey Tony, I just found this video in a Google search tonight after completing the Tiptonic sizing process. Didn't realize you had covered the picks so this was a great find. Anyway, my question was...how important is preheating the picks in the activator? The site implied it wasn't critical (I think remember reading "it helps") and I've been hoping they can just be popped on and off quickly when I can sneak 10 minutes in here and there as the day allows. Is that that case, or do they really have to be heated each time, so make more sense when you're really committing to a good block of time playing?
