Save Ukraine From American Meddling | Jeffrey Sachs, June 27, 2024

  • Reading by Jeffrey D. Sachs. Essay available on The Hill: thehill.com/op...
Ukraine can only be saved at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield. Sadly, this point is not understood by Ukrainian politicians such as Oleg Dunda, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, who recently wrote an oped on this site against my repeated call for negotiations.
Dunda believes that the U.S. will save Ukraine from Russia. The opposite is true. Ukraine actually needs to be saved from the U.S.
Ukraine epitomizes Henry Kissinger’s famous aphorism, “It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.”
Thirty years ago, Ukraine was embraced by America’s neoconservatives, who believed that it was the perfect instrument for weakening Russia. The neocons are the ideological believers in American hegemony, that is, the right and responsibility of the U.S. to be the world’s sole superpower and global policeman (as described, for example, in the Project for a New American Century’s 2000 report, “Rebuilding America’s Defenses”).
The neocons chose three methods to push U.S. power and influence into Ukraine: first, meddle in Ukraine’s internal politics; second, expand NATO to Ukraine, despite Russia’s red line; and third, arm Ukraine and apply economic sanctions to defeat Russia.

In countries where corruption is rife like Ukraine, it naturally becomes fertile grounds for U.S. manipulation to satisfy personal greeds and lusts for power of those politicians and army generals who yearn for a slice of advantages and fame. Sacrificing their own citizens for personal gains suits their life philosophy. Many people have asked the question of whether Zelenskyy is really even an Ukrainian by his willingness to forfeit the lives of so many Ukrainians for a proxy war on behalf of his master. Do not feel surprised if there are more people like him still lurking within the government and the army, waiting for their chance to make big bucks.

In the recent exchange between Jeffrey and Pierce Morgan, the position of the latter was that America always wears the "white hat" while the Russians always wear the "black hat." Sachs reminded Morgan of the repeated wars started by the US just in the last two decades. The invasion of Afghanistan was in response to the so-called "terrorist attack" of 9/11. I wish Sachs had pointed out to Morgan that, in addition to ignoring the other seven (yes, 7) WTC buildings destroyed, the Official 9/11 Commission Report states that the "collapse" of the Twin Towers took between 10 and 11 seconds. 10-11 seconds from that height equals free-fall speed. That means that the towers had 0 structural support, that each floor had 0 mass, therefore 0 inertia, and thus accelerated from 0 to free-fall speed instantaneously, and that the air inside each floor also escaped instantaneously through the windows (which are as air-tight and as solidly sealed in their frames as a car windshield). This gravity-defying lie laid the basis for a series of US invasions in the Middle East, none of which "won the hearts and minds" of the people who live there. In fact, much of the world (BRICS +)are now telling the US: "Yankee fo home."

Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.
In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.
Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.
Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time
Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.
20th September, 2021. Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.
NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.
Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?
Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.
Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.
Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”.
Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.
Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.
Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.
There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).
The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.
Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P.
The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.
I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

How the Minsk 1 and 2 came to be was sadly omitted, and that is critical. Ukraine issued a law that basically banned the usage of the Russian language, 30% of the population being Russian speakers, the eastern provinces to become breakaway republics overwhelmingly Russian in descent, language, culture and religion
Ukrainie attacked the two provinces Ruth their military but were surrounded by the east Ukrainian militia dvd badly beaten. They would have destroyed tens of thousands of the neonazi troops, were it not for France and Germany who asked to let them go but incorporate the rights of the Russian-speaking Ukrainians in the two consecutive agreements, France and Germany were to be guarantors, hence the Minsk I and 2 accords.
In 2021, it wasn't Biden who said no. Biden and Putin seemed to have agreed on the topic, which was reflected in the official Russian readout of the talks, but not in the American one. It was Blinken who told Lavrov the issue was non negotiable several weeks after that.
The next attempt was actually not in March but in February 2022, when Putin hosted the newly elected Scholz's visit. Scholz famously told during his press-conference on his return that the idea of Russians being under genocide was 'laughable'. That was the last diplomatic attempt a few weeks before the start of the military operation.

The important person to read on Ukraine which can be done in English is Ischenko who wrote the article in the NLR called "Into the Abyss". He points out that Ukraine is a very divided country. The mistake many people make is to look at it as a homogeneous bloc. There are many divides - regional, ethnic. But the most important one politically is class. Unfortunately the English speaking cosmopolitan elite dominate discussion about Ukraine in the West. We do not hear from lower income groups that have tended not to support Zalensky - particularly after he implemented neo-liberal reforms that increased the price of fuel. This was part of his policy to seperate Ukrainian dependence on Russia (in this case on its cheap energy) and integrate with the West, which required he adopted IMF policy prescriptions.

The task of building the peace lies with the leaders of every nation, large and small. For the great powers have no monopoly on conflict or ambition. The Cold War is not the only expression of tension in this world, and the nuclear race is not the only arms race. Even little wars are dangerous in a nuclear world. The long labor of peace is an undertaking for every nation -- and in this effort none of us can remain unaligned. To this goal none can be uncommitted.
The reduction of global tension must not be an excuse for the narrow pursuit of self-interest. If the Soviet Union and the United States, with all of their global interests and clashing commitments of ideology, and with nuclear weapons still aimed at each other today, can find areas of common interest and agreement, then surely other nations can do the same -- nations caught in regional conflicts, in racial issues, or in the death throes of old colonialism. Chronic disputes which divert precious resources from the needs of the people or drain the energies of both sides serve the interests of no one -- and the badge of responsibility in the modern world is a willingness to seek peaceful solutions.
It is never too early to try; and it's never too late to talk; and it's high time that many disputes on the agenda of this Assembly were taken off the debating schedule and placed on the negotiating table.
The fact remains that the United States, as a major nuclear power, does have a special responsibility to the world. It is, in fact, a threefold responsibility: a responsibility to our own citizens; a responsibility to the people of the whole world who are affected by our decisions; and to the next generation of humanity. We believe the Soviet Union also has these special responsibilities -- and that those responsibilities require our two nations to concentrate less on our differences and more on the means of resolving them peacefully. For too long both of us have increased our military budgets, our nuclear stockpiles, and our capacity to destroy all life on this hemisphere -- human, animal, vegetable -- without any corresponding increase in our security.
Our conflicts, to be sure, are real. Our concepts of the world are different. No service is performed by failing to make clear our disagreements. A central difference is the belief of the American people in self-determination for all people.
We believe that the people of Germany and Berlin must be free to reunite their capital and their country.
We believe that the people of Cuba must be free to secure the fruits of the revolution that have been betrayed from within and exploited from without.
In short, we believe that all the world -- in Eastern Europe as well as Western, in Southern Africa as well as Northern, in old nations as well as new -- that people must be free to choose their own future, without discrimination or dictation, without coercion or subversion.
These are the basic differences between the Soviet Union and the United States, and they cannot be concealed. So long as they exist, they set limits to agreements, and they forbid the relaxation of our vigilance. Our defense around the world will be maintained for the protection of freedom -- and our determination to safeguard that freedom will measure up to any threat or challenge.
But I would say to the leaders of the Soviet Union, and to their people, that if either of our countries is to be fully secure, we need a much better weapon than the H-bomb -- a weapon better than ballistic missiles or nuclear submarines -- and that better weapon is peaceful cooperation.
