I just finished reading The Golden Bowl and this video is excellent in giving me a greater appreciation of the novel. Colm Toibin provides lots of interesting commentary. His book, The Master, is a very good read and highly recommended.

Participating in this book club reading was a huge treat several years ago. I’m reading The Golden Bowl for the third time since then. I just re-watched this interview with Toibin from, when, 2015? Now I know the answer to who I would invite to a dinner party if I could invite anyone - Toibin, to talk some more about any and all James novels…and Hemingway, and Waugh…thank you WSJ!

Did he not see the BBC adaptation with the great Cyril Cusac as the narrator/Bob Assingham?

The Golden Bowl is to my mind the most turgid, overwritten novel in English.Somerset Maugh, given the same source material would have produced a perfectly serviceable and emotional engaging short story on this vestigial plot. The novel however provides some needed gobbets for Academics who like cultural vultures will find some nutritious titbits in this bloated carcass of a book.

i get it, compared to "normal" books it is painful. James is is almost edging us from what we are supposed to desire from stories. Perhaps that's what being a celibate late Victorian gay man does to a person.
