Cracking video Abigayle! The AE86 is a legend of a car in certain circles, other people will just see an old Toyota Corolla Coupe. I remember seeing a few around Manchester growing up in the 80's and I just thought it was a more interesting looking Corolla.

As a former AE86 and AW11 owner, I would strongly suggest that you go for a drive in a similarly restored AW11.
My following comments will be a direct comparison of these 2 vehicles & specific chassis codes (both with the same engine).
The AE86 has its charm, but it by no means a 'raw' driving experience car. The AE86 is a rather passive driving experience as the suspension is gentle, as is appropriate for a Corolla, whereas the Mr2's suspension is quite a notch more active/reactive.
Stateside the LSD in the Corolla was not standard equipment, but an optional extra - the Mr2 was never offered with an LSD (except perhaps the Supercharged version).
The true magic of the AE86 is the engine, weight and weight balance. The AE86 weighs a few hundred pounds less than the AW11. A high revving engine in a chassis that doesn't weigh a lot, that also has a forgiving weight balance allows for the driver to go through turns at higher than average speeds, with the feeling that the car won't become uncontrollable or rotate around unexpectedly.
Admittedly, that is where the AW11 is vastly different beast. The rear biased weight balance takes time to get used to (extra weight over the rear tires means extra grip to a point), but once you do the speed you can go through corners is much higher than the Corolla. Unlike the Corolla, in the Mr2 if the rear tires begin to make noise you either calm yourself (ie. stay where you are on throttle and keep your steering inputs gentle) OR you might end up looking the other way (rotate around) - this makes the AW11 a more challenging and much more rewarding car to drive at speed. The gearing on the Mr2 is significantly shorter, which results in much better acceleration compared to the Corolla.
This isn't meant in any way to diminish the AE86. This is meant to demonstrate that the AE86 had a target audience, and that audience wasn't the hard core driver, as the Corolla by it's nature at that time was a small family car. The AW11 was by comparison for the hard core driver as with only 2 seats this was no family car, very limited storage space a good weekend getaway car (and little more), rear weight bias not for the average driver, and the engine being behind the driver meant it was much louder in the cabin than the Corolla.

Apologies, but your narrative dropped this important point. The AE86 is RWD, as any drifter would assume it must be. Your video doesn't say that. Listening carefully to the story you told, it accidentally implies that it is one of the new FWD cars, rather than the last(ish?) of the RWD. I'm sure it was unintentional, but for the uninitiated, it's damn confusing. I was listening, realizing you implied it was FWD, looked at the motor orientation, and my mind started questioning, did they use the Saab FWD longitudinal layout, pioneered by Citroen, adopted by Subaru?
Nah, don't be daft. It's Initial D, it's RWD. Anyway. Fun video. Thanks for sharing!
