  • Quacker clamps, or duckbill/platypus clamps, are a staple in any grip kit. While not as versatile as spring clamps, these are made specifically for holding reflectors, shiny board, bead board, foamcore, etc. and they do it way better than any other combination of gear. Having a quacker clamp or two in your kit can really save you time on, and add value to, your productions. While these normally retail for $70+, you can make your own for around $25/clamp (and if you want to make multiple the price goes down even further!).
    You should be able to find all the materials at your local big box home improvement or hardware store (I picked everything up at my local Menards), but I've included some links below if you'd rather order online.

    This channel is criminally underrated. I hate I only just found it, but I’m be recommending it to friends. Your DIY series has been such a pleasure to watch. I’ve already made a few of these myself, but it’s great to see another approach to it and get ideas on making my DIY tools even better!

    A great pacing and attention to detail. I just spent 30 minutes looking at all the various clamps available on B&H. Boy were they expensive.

    I tried to follow this, but I was unable to drill through the metal of the clamp. Even tried $10 cobalt drill for hardened steel. It was able to make a small dimple in the metal but didn't come close to going through. Can you tell me what that drill bit is you are using? Thanks!

    • @VenturaMargherita
      @VenturaMargherita 4 года назад +2

      Success!! OK, after a little searching online, I discovered it's not so much the drill bit, but the drill technique. To get through the metal you need to drill slowly, and use oil so your bit doesn't heat up too much. I sprayed a little bit of WD-40 where I wanted to drill, and used the lowest speed I could manage on my variable speed hand drill, and it went through like butter! Not I've got a great preacher clamp to hold my fantastic $5 bounce board (video here: ruclips.net/video/BJO9IZPQnKM/видео.html) and I'm in business! Thanks Adam!

      I had the same problem. The solution is to use a propane or MAPP torch and get the clamp surface red hot and (important) let it cool down slowly. Don't quench it in water; that will only harden the metal more. Annealing will soften the metal and it'll drill easily. Just made one today and liked it so much I'm going to make another one. My total cost was about $18; got the clamp from Harbor Freight. I had a scrap piece of 1/2" steel rod so I welded it to the back of the clamp. I can't believe these things go for $86.00!

      @@DroiMedia Can you share exactly what bit and drill you used? It looks so easy in your video but I’m having the same problem. Just trying to avoid buying a blow torch and putting more money into this.

    I'd say your labor here is probably valued at around $85.
    (coincidentally, that's the average price for the platypuses I've been able to find online haha)

    • @anthonypc1
      @anthonypc1 3 года назад +1

      Just for personal use -- not pro sets -- I'm thinking of just getting some A clamps and hot gluing plastic square "plates" inside the jaws. Maybe with some rough velcro hooks for more grippy texture...
      I just need some for holding b-boards. But are there A clamps (or other cheap clamps) with 5/8ths attachment pegs ?
      I do not own a dremel.

      Anthony, nice mathing here, you're probably pretty close in that estimation. While I really advocate for DIY projects and I love doing them, one thing I don't think many people realize is that DIY stuff is not always the most cost effective way to go, especially if you're just looking at from a basic 'time spent' vs 'potential to earn' during that time, OR, if you follow most of my builds when I try and balance longevity / durability rather than just the cheapest option. All that being said I would hope people are doing their DIY stuff during down time or on nights/weekends when they are not typically working, and if you build more than 1 at a time your price per unit decreases dramatically. I don't show it in my final videos but most times after I've prototyped and gotten a project how I want I will build several of them so my costs are much lower than if I were to just make 1 of that item. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Also, an A-clamp with some plastic squares or something attached would work fine probably - I would consider some thicker bounce board, or if you have access to some of those election yard signs they tend to be pretty rugged and rigid. Let me know what you decide to go with and how they turn out (I might even totally steal your idea and make a tutorial on this :) ). For the a-clamps, they likely make one with a spigot BUT the ones at my local hardware stores usually have 1/2" holes in each handle and then on the tips (hidden under the rubber caps) - see if you can find some of those and then you just need a 5/8" pin w/ a small bolt and maybe a lock washer to attach to the handle of the a-clamp (I use these holes to mount my GoPro to weird shit all the time, just a little 1/4x20 tripod screw through that hole into the camera mount and it'll clamp on almost anywhere).

      @@DroiMedia Thank you thank you.
      This was more good advice than I was hoping for this morning.
      Just found your videos encouraging this past weekend after prioritizing most of my budget for a home studio on lighting and a microphone. Can't be above using what's in the recycling bin for rigging what's out of frame!.
