Here’s my theory: the “egg” is actually a fungus. It grows root like mycelium that break down and transfer nutrients to the specimen. It has been shown to be able to reproduce asexually via budding (pieces have been taken and grown separately) and has mind controlling factors that cause it´s hosts to cultivate its growth, something particularly displayed in /ants/. When pieces are broken off, these is no sign of it having a shell or any sign of an embryo inside, so it is unlikely to be a true egg. If my theory is correct, the egg may be a hyphal knot, which will grow into a mushroom and eventually generate spores to replicate the cycle across the server.
