  • I've got a Speyside single malt from Benriach today. I last had their Smoky 12 and quite liked it. I've got the 10 with me today. This has spent some time in some interesting casks. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

I thought this is a pretty balanced, rounded speyside attempt at peat. The malt definitely shines through with a gentle oak finish.

Absolutely every opinion you utter I negate wholeheartedly. This is really interesting. I've been waiting for only one agreement for about one year now... Nothing. You say something, me: shaking the head. But even if you are my nemesis: I'll learn from you, and that's the only thing I'm interested in.

Try the Old Ballantruan series (NAS, 10 and 15). Huge forest bonfire mainland Speyside peat punch with heavy toffee/burnt caramel and wood spices. Superb and delicious as the final dram of the evening.
Non Chill Filtered but unfortunately, Tomintoul do insist on adding E150a colouring. I simply don't understand why. It makes no sense whatsoever. Good luck with the channel.

Thank you Reb! I'll look into Old Ballantruan. I don't think I've had one in about 10 years, although I remember enjoying the bottle I had. Cheers! 🥃

Tried the unpeated... generally weak imho. No complexity, no texture, weak nose and taste that suggest weak casks, and extreme short finish. Was a rare case of wasted money.

I just wish, that they would skip the virgin oak barrel. It often does nothing that great. Jamaican rum cask are a good choice though. I hope, that more distilleries willl use them.

Here in France the smoky ten costs around 30 euros and the smoky twelve around 60 euros.
I think both are chill filtered ? (smoky ten at least)
The difference of price is justified for you ?

I tried the Smoky 12 and it was not right for what I was looking for. I instead found what I wanted in the Benromach 15. I'm still waiting to get my hands on a Benromach 10. I have a sampler of the Benriach 10 unpeated I've yet to taste.

Have had the old BenRiach Curiositas Peated Malt 10-year old and though not a peat bomb of course it has its charms (has that milk chocolate note like Highland Park 10) so I'm 'curious' to find out what this one and the 12 are like. In this style is Glenglassaugh Torfa Richly Peated 50% - unassuming NAS but higher ABV - has some strawberry notes and again, not a peat bomb, but a relaxing gentle peated dram with some depths if you give it time. A flight of drams going from speyside /lowland whiskies to these types of peated easy-going tipples also has its place at times.

Curious as to how you found info about non-chilled filtration as I could find none.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад

It's listed as NCF on a couple websites, most notably whiskybase. 🙂

Yeah. Unfortunate how rarely these things show up on brand sites and packaging.

@@Gwhisky I 100% agree that they ought to state this on the label. It is just ignorance on the marketing department side. I can confirm that they are NCF and in fact, there is a clue on the label. The magic ABV number of 46%.

I just reviewed this with the 12 and even though I prefer the 10 and love the nose, the taste was a little underwhelming like you say here, great review, cheers!

Good call on the vanilla-coke finish - can't get it out of my head now you've mentioned it. Thoroughly enjoyable though. Reminds me of the cola-bottle sweets.

Wish I could comment on the ten....haven’t tried it yet. I only have the batch 1&2 cask strength which are amazingly good, especially batch 2...and the 2015 bottling, 12yr Sherry , PX and oloroso casks. I certainly think the batch 2 cask strength maybe hard to find, but it’s worth the work, as it’s awesome. Benriach make great stuff. Enjoyed your review on the 10. Slainte mhath 🥃🥃🥃👍

Hello from NW Arkansas,Great review as always, honest straightforward info,
Thank you for all your reviews, whenever you can if you haven't tried it already, try the Lagavulin 9 game of thrones, it's amazing for a 9 years old whisky, here in my area is 68$, I try to keep it in my bar all the time, same with the 16, cheers 🥃

Thanks for the kind words! I'd love to try the Laga GoT, but unfortunately it's the equivalent of $130 where I live. We usually have good prices here in Taiwan, but all those Game of Thrones releases are expensive here. Definitely one to check out if I ever find it for a reasonable price. $68 sounds like a steal! Cheers! 🥃

I usually go towards very different style of whisky. Though today I treated my self with this smoky ten. Even though this is a new style of whisky for me but I do enjoy it a lot. To be fair I do like smoky flavors in whisky. I was expecting a little stronger taste but I can comfortably a 7/10. It could be a 8/10 if it would have a bit stronger after taste and a bit more of a color to it. The for the price range I think its pretty good for where I live as usually you get very bottom self whisky for cheaper and if you want anything significantly better they go for a significantly higher price.
