Chpz 117 lol, I don't think anyone would disagree. If you watch the light rigging competitions, these set-ups are so complicated and can have so many problems. Each one, regardless of light amount, is insane.

For those who don't know, they didnt set up these lighte just for thie video. This is two houses in utah! They set up lights from halloween till valentines day! Its incredible! Most the time its hooked up to a radio! I go every year! You need to check it out if your in Utah during those times!

You know Christmas is coming when The Piano Guys release another video. It's been years since O come, O come, Emmanuel, and yet the creativity and ambitious ideas have never stopped. The videos are always fun and beautiful at the same time. Love it!

Perhaps some keys were linked to the same sets of lights. It doesn't say each of 88 keys have their own lights, just that the 88 keys work in conjunction to toggle 500,000 lights.

yes. he brushed across the whole piano at the beginning pressing all keys. so it's verified that he did use them all. perhaps not during the song but still

Yeah, like making sure the ADT operators aren't being distracted by watching this video while the home is being robbed.
That's a dumb thing to think about, it costs more to cook your toast every morning than run this many Christmas lights in total all a very small cost.
Plus a lot of them we're LEDs.
With LEDs, which they most likely used, it's not as expensive as it used to be with lightbulbs. If fact it's about 1/10 to 1/20 of the regular costs.

Perhaps my absolute favorite Jon Schmidt/TPG song of all time! It gives me the sense of Christmas nostalgia- that happy feeling that reminds you of Christmas past. I was able to play this song at a Christmas concert, and it was widely adored by the audience. Thank you, again TPG for making the best music we could ever ask for!
this made me cry. i don't really know why except maybe that it's late, and it's almost christmas, and this was beautiful. maybe that this is abgood piece on its own, but these lights really made it so much more amazing. maybe though, probably, it's because this makes me think about how beautiful music is, how there's no other way to describe it than art, because how is this not pure art? and maybe because i know i'll never ever be able to have the career i've been dreaming of because it's impossible, but that i've accepted that, and that i know i couldn't live without music regardless. so thank you.

I went to your concert in San Diego the other night, and I just have to say that, as an aspiring youth musician (violin, piano, viola, and s bit of cello), it was probably the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen (and heard)! I was absolutely awed by not only the technical level at which you played, but also by the overwhelming passion you two had for music. I’ve seen all your videos countless times, but seeing my two music idols in person was so much better! I really hope that as I keep practicing my music, I might be able to reach the heights that you have, and feel that sensation of “flying”. I also really enjoyed the guest musicians (so talented and young)! I can’t wait to see you guys live again!
I always love the videos this time of year with the music-controlled light displays. There are some VERY creative people out there. I imagine this was probably not very easy to stage and shoot the video on, being low light night work, but TPG makes it happen! Back in Richmond, VA, there were whole streets lit up (on the wacky Christmas light tours given by the local radio stations) - imagine an entire block controlled by TPG Christmas music! That would make one heck of an aerial shot!

Half a million lights! That’s 5,682 lights per piano key! Now that’s a power(bill)!

According to the fuller description on TPG's site (linked to from the description above), 46 kW - if connected in series, each LED would be approximately 0.092W. For comparison, I've just looked at the box for a set of 240 I've got, and they're rated at 3V 0.005A 0.015W (so the string as a whole is 30V, 6VA).

I came here because the Magic Light Shows (Tom BetGeorge) happily revealed that he was working with The Piano Guys. It is a great combination of two types of talents that both amuse us.
The message should be transferred to Tom. His house is definitely not covered with lights by every inch, so I don't think he could win The Greatest Light Fight, but his musical coordination is awesome. I like his 2014 Star Wars so much better than 2017 Star Wars of the Johnson Family, San Antonio, TX. Check them all out :D

maybe this is in an area where it doesn't get cold in the winter. he might be wearing gloves for the "look". If you look closer, there is no snow on the ground and it looks like the grass and many of the plants are still there.

Jared Davidson i think they had pre-registered the piano and then they created an light animation based on that recorded track, and then they played the song and the animation at the same time during the making of the vid :)
paolollo 17 no. the key presses actuate what goes on. similar for visuals for concerts. someone has to press the button
soren7133 I highly doubt it, although that would be cool. They likely used some light & sound programming to align the music to lights before or after the fact. How would you connect the piano keys to the lights? There are no cords running from the piano.

Probably, but what would be cool is if the piano was actually wired up to control them directly. A connector on the hammers, connected to one on the wires, and when the hammer hits the wire, it completes a circuit. Not sure how that would impact the sound, but it would be fun just to do it.
The piano could have controlled the lights directly through MIDI but I'm pretty sure it actually didn't. However, TPG were very creative in giving the illusion that the piano was controlling the lights. I would say the piano was the inspiration for the light show. Very well done.
