Hi from england your the answer to my prayers used to have approx 30 athearn tunnel motors got approx 20 left gonna have to do this to all of them!!!thanks for posting the solution 👏👏👏
WOW!! Dan, that came out absolutely superb! Im not sure if your other viewers have had this particular problem w/ this unit but that male axle shaft has popped out on my exact RTR tunnel motor and after the 3rd time I came up w/ a fix to put a spacer inside the female connection to keep it tighter on the other side and that fixed the problem, I should have just done what you did and I will if it pops out again. A side note as a retired UP engineer I cant tell you the amount of suction that creates when those units are in Run 8. It is like a vacuum cleaner and would suck you in if there was not a grill. We would have to go back to a trailing unit on the Sierra mtns going less than 25mph when those were running if alarm bells started going off. Good to see you back... Take care!! David BAC V RR 🤗
I did this modification years ago. I always ran the tunnel motor with other powered units.. I never had a problem with it pulling. Another great video!
ScaleTrains makes their SD40T-2 with full see through from the factory! The newer Athearn tunnel motors have the gear tower reversed so the rear truck is fully powered and you get most of the see through effect.
Some of the tunnel motors that are still in service have had compressors put in the radiator vent intake bay. For those locomotives being able to see the top of the gear tower looks almost like the compressor that is now occupying that space.
I just found another potential use for this technique. Check out NREX 9402 -- it's a unique Frankenlocomotive made from an SD40(-2?) body on top of an SD45-2 frame. The long hood ends about where the middle axle of the rear truck is, and there's a _huge_ rear porch. It'd make a really great modeling project and you'd need to remove the tunnel gear of the rear truck or literally half of it would be outside the locomotive body. Looks like it was taken out of service around 2011 but it was still in NRE's dead-line in late 2020.
HELLO BEEBLE ! HOW ARE YOU ! NREX # 9402 IS AN X SP / SSW SD45-T2 (TUNNEL MOTOR ) WITH AN X NS SD40-2 REAR HOOD ! I HAVE BUILT THIS LOCOMOTIVE AND IT IS A STUNNING KIT BASH THAT TRULY RAISES EYE BROWS !
Brilliant job Dan one of my Australian locomotives has this issue where the tower gear is in the way of the see through grill and in real life the locomotive i have has a full see through grill. You have done a fine job there mate.- Nicholas.
HEY DAN ! WHAT'S UP ! HAVE YOU CONSIDERED USING A SCALE RAIL SD40-T2 /SD45-T2 REAR TRUCK ? ALSO THERE WAS AN ARTICLE IN MODEL RAILROADER ON MODIFYING THE ATHEARN REAR TRUCK , I HAVE DONE THIS AND IT IS A LOT OF WORK BUT IT IS WORTH IT AND YOU DONT LOSE ANY POWER ! BASICALLY YOU REVERSE THE TRUCK TOWER !
@@DansRailroad2011 YUP ! , REVERSE THE TRUCK TOWER , ALTER THE OPENING IN THE FRAME TO ALLOW THE TOWER TO SWING IN THE FRAME , MODIFY THE TOP GEAR SHROUD TO TURN THE DRIVE GEAR AROUND SHORTEN THE MOTOR ROD ! WITH A FEW ADJUSTMENTS BASICALLY THAT'S IT !
Have you done a pull test after your modification? It would be good to know the reduction in pulling power so we could calculate the number of cars one or two of these modified units would pull. very nice and instructive modification. The see through really makes a difference

Those tunnel motors sucked in a lot of air, that's for sure!

We've all seen the drum set now so you gonna have to make a video of playing them showing off your talent in that area. 👍

Almost all of them carried on in Brasil and Colombia....some were rebuilt as BBs ......now ES43BBi locomotives are getting certain SD40T-2s retired.

Outstanding job! Now I can fix one of my locomotives that has a broken pin that holds the truck in place. Great Job as always👍👍
