This is awesome! I use diaphragmatic breathing during yoga and it has helped my anxiety levels so much. Thanks for sharing these amazing techniques Barbara!
@@BarbaraHeffernan I didn't understand how yoga helped me, and being a very analytical thinker, it is important for me to know how it works. I had a sneaking suspicion that the diaphragmatic breathing somehow told my brain that everything is ok and that it's not necessary to be in flight/fright/freeze mode. Just knowing that this is how you easily communicate with the amygdala is such a "aha" moment for me. Thanks again!
😮 This is eye opening to the point of, I think this is CRAZY REAL! This happens to me over and over and over and over and over in a day. I’m going to set my alarm and give this a go today.
I just wanna thank you so much I have been having anxiety and stress it has been a hell of a ride to me but after I watched the first video you posted I felt like am not alone and it feels good actually knowing that am not alone and thanks for helping us we can't survive without you we need you
Your videos have helped me a lot in last few months. I have been going through a pretty intense phase in my life and the COVID situation only adds more stress to it. Thanks a lot for helping me.
i ve just discovered your channel and i became a regular visitor, cannot tell how much that helps especially now that i started psychotherapy. Barbara a lot of love❤❤
This helps so much. Once you're aware of your breathing- many of us realize we breathe with our shoulders/chest and not belly. Meditation, yoga and learning vagus nerve exercises all recommend diaphragm breathing.
A happy, healthy and fulfilling New Year, Barbara. I'm watching and taking notes, really grateful and learning a lot. When you mentioned the video on the Triune brain I smiled cause I watched that recently and found it very useful, but it's not linked to this video as you may have intended. Not sure if it can still be done now but thought I'd mention it in case you still want to link it, think people listening to the mini series could benefit from that. Think I'll rewatch it myself after I finish this playlist.
Barbara your explanation is amazing , I kindly request if you can make a video about ocd treatment, and panic attack treatment...thank you very much from iraq.
@@BarbaraHeffernan I'm having difficulties sleeping at night.. I have try breathing in and out but my anxiety takes over.. feels like I'm going crazy.. I'm going to try it out tonight!! Appreciate the info..
Hello Barbara, thank you for all your great videos. I'm looking for the rest of the "aah!" mini-series but cannot find it. Do you have a link for that? Blessings, Sharon
Here is the playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLhEK7JY7zF9kA_tAaHg7IAViexM94wqnx. The next one after this is the Diaphragmatic Breathing Demonstration. LMK how you feel in 3 weeks!!
Whenever I've tried this I was feeling out of breath and like I need hyperventilate, so I am stressed even more. I am sure that those are very useful techniques and that I'm doing something in incorrect way. Willing to try again and hope that this time I would do better.
Yes, sometimes people can find it stressful to focus on the breath. Tomorrow at 8am EDT I'll release the video demonstrating the technique - give it a try with some patience! Also, maybe just do it a little "lighter" - don't try to force it. Hope that is helpfuL!
Yes but you are strengthening your diaphragm and it will get easier the more you do it. In the long run it allow you to breath more efficient and get more oxygen into your body
It often helps to really relax the abdomen, as well as slowly exhale. If we inhale too deeply, too quickly, and without proper exhale..:it stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of what we are trying to do. Slow inhale, relaxed abdomen and slow exhale sometimes a mantra like "letting go" with the exhale helps. Way back when, when I tried deep breathing...I didn't get it either. I thought it didn't work. It took many different tries and yoga definitely helped me coordinate the breathing and fuller release. 💫
