You have not tried the 991 but you think you can make a public comment on why you won't buy one for the technical reasons you state and that a SDR is cheaper? Are you high? Any SDR rig that has the bands that the 991 has would be much higher priced.

Bought the FT-991 and liked it so much that I brought an FTdx10 home this past week. Great rigs. When asked by any new HAM what would I recommend as a first radio, I always tell them the 991. The versatility alone gives them access to so many aspects of the hobby, which allows the, time and experience to see where their interests are. 7300 cant be beat for quality rig at a great price, the 991 cant be beat for versatility, and the new dx10 is a fantastic rig with features only found on much more expensive radios.
Great time to be a HAM

Granted SDR is a newer technology, but when considering these two radios (given their lower end price point), how much better is a SDR using real world conditions? Rather than making blind speculations about their receiver performance differences, what would impress me is if the author ran side by side tests to prove (or disprove) that the IC-7300's SDR receiver really offers a "noticeable improvement" over the FT-991's super-het receiver.
The main advantages of the IC-7300 that I see involve the real-time spectrum display on the IC-7300 but there are trade offs: no DStar, no VHF, no UHF. And of course the FT-991 offers the newest ViOP technology, Fusion (C4FM).

  • @KitelessRex

These are all good points. I have an FT-991 and really love it. I think it's mainly a matter of what the individual needs for their use case. I needed a "Shack in a Box" radio. I also host a System Fusion net every week on our local repeater and am looking forward to what this Net might be like when Yaesu FIIIIIINALLY gets their proper software update so our DR-1X can use the HRI-200 for more D-Star like internet connectivity.
Fusion is very much in it's early days but even still more and more DR1X repeaters are coming online here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a useful mode for that as well as Simplex. The little FT1D is very well priced and a relatively inexpensive entry point into digital voice and even APRS.
The new IC-7300 coming out is geared more toward the HF only user. Looks like it's got a nice Pan Adaptor built in as well but no D-Star. If all you want is HF and the latest and greatest, the 7300 seems like an awesome package.
    Thanks for posting. :)

Old video but 2 cents anyway. It appears opinion is based on a theory. While the 7300 is a good looking beginner radio and has what many would agree a better beginner interface the 2 radios are really apples and oranges. 991A has a great receiver built in especially with filters etc. but also is a true shack in a box. Also it packs in C4FM, Wires X, and more modes on more bands like 2M/440 SSB and AM. Add an RSP Play and auto antenna switch and you have SDRUNO as your waterfall display which is better than any radio I can think of. Bottom line in real use it performs very well and can easily do more than most rigs. Theory is a nice start only. I'm glad I spent months researching rigs before dropping the dough. I did have a USB port failure and had to send in for warranty (3 years) repair which took almost a month due to staff shortages. Other than that I love this radio.

I was between the ftdx-3000 and the Kenwood ts590sg when I found out about the IC-7300, which I have now preordered. The water fall scope and ability to have software adjustable filtering and noise reduction/blanker in an SDR in addition to the reciever being great made it the right choice for me. At least these features where things I loved in both the Anan-10 and flex-1500 I have owned. The reason I was going back to the analog superhet is I wanted a solid 100W transceiver with knobs, in the 7300 you have the best of both worlds. 73, Tom

Ever since I got an Elecraft radio I probably won't buy another Japanese radio, at least not for HF only. The support is way better on the K3 and KX3 than anything that Yaesu, Icom, or Kenwood plus they have excellent performance. I like the fact that an original K3 can be updated to a modern K3S standard if you want, whereas if you got one of the big 3 radios during the same time frame, you have a 10 year old radio that can't be updated. Also, as an American buying a radio made in the USA is also a bonus. I know some don't like the Elecraft interface, but it works well for me.

I have heard that Yaesu has been having some issues with their firmware and stuff.... The FT-991 is a nice compact rig, but I prefer the lines and functionality of the IC-7300. The real-time waterfall is what I lust for. But alas....I bought a 7200. NO, I have not regretted that for an instant. I absolutely love this on Digi and also in the field. I'll let the 7300 prove itself for a 3-year shakedown; while my TS-850 effortlessly carries me through and re-evaluate then.

Wanting to buy an IC-7300 isn't much of a reason for not wanting the Yaesu. I own a 7300, and love it, and also own an IC-9700. But that would in no way make me not want to also own a Yaesu 991. Neither of my Icoms will do Fusion. In fact neither of my Icoms will do BOTH HF and 2m/70cm. To me, it seems like the Yaesu would be a welcome addition to any shack regardless of what other radios you already have or might want to buy.

I’m using my sons account to make an observation that a lot of hams might over look and that is while the 7300 is a great radio it cannot give 2 /70 centimeters am/ ssb those are also contesting bands so only limited number of radios provide that feature. Kenwood ts-2000 Yaesu ft-847 ft-857/897 Icom 7100 706mkiig ft-817/818 so don’t forget those radios to name just a few for uhf and vhf they are not exclusively fm they can do the other modes if you have a radio that can offer it. 73’s from KB1IWE

You Are wrong about SDR radios being better performers. Down conversion first gives you far better selectivity then take the product from that and put it in the SDR part of the process. Most radios of the SDR vintage don't have enough filtering in the front end to give great selectivity unless you are going to spend $6k plus to get this kind of performance. Check out the Sherwood reports.. 73

You said, "Tell me what you think!"
I think you gave a terrible presentation. You don't like a radio but never even tried it!
I had an FT897D and loved that little do all radio for portable and using it in my shop. For my primary station I use a Kenwood TS990S so I know what good is. I replaced my 897D with a 991A and I love that radio. I like it so much I use it in my primary station from time to time. I will say that it's not a user friendly radio since you have to go through almost 10 screens just to turn the noise blanker on and off. BUT....once you learn all of the in's and out's of that little radio and set it up properly, it's a great radio. I've gotten so many unsolicited great audio reports from around the world. There is not one 100 watt radio on the market that covers all of those band that is equal to or better than the FT991A.
The IC7300 is a true SDR. I borrowed one, had it on 40 meters and the overload light kept coming on. You can't use that radio in a multi multi contest station, it will overload. The FT991A won't like the 7300 does.
If I were Yaesu, I would not send you one to test.
At this time your thumbs up is 66 and thumbs down is 142. What does that tell you about your presentation?

Sorry for resurrecting zombie thread, but 1.) you didn’t really say anything, so not even sure what the intent of this video is. . . 2.) these radios are not for the same audience. The 991 is a shack in a box, the 7300 is an HF SDR. . . Totally different audiences. People group then together because of the similar price points and the similar aesthetic but I don’t believe someone looking for the ultimate in SSB / FM on 40/80/160 is comparing these apples to apples. You can’t possibly expect Yaesu to be comparable to a 7300 from a nerd knob standpoint on HF and Computer / Digital integration. It’s purpose built for that. I mean, the 991A has 90% of that covered as well, and For Christ’s sake they have included an entire additional radio in the chassis along with the HF guts. 7300 is JUST giving you SDR features and HF. The question everyone should ask is why is the only SIAB option from icom a QRP box 705 ? They could have easily put that in the 7300 they just chose to back you into an additional radio. I get that market drives development but come on, not offering a 100W SIAB is short sighted. I’d love to see a docking station for grab and go function. Clearly Icom as usual wants you to buy a radio for every QTH, and kill you with accessories. They’re the Harley Davidson of Radio. At least Yaesu is providing value for money and addressing a growing segment of the market. ==the radio enthusiast who is New or isn’t totally sure what they’re interested in, so they can get 1 portable radio and dabble in all modes on all bands and decide where to focus. This, in and of itself is a brilliant take for Yaesu and one that goes under reported.
