Exactly what the PC world needs right now. I really hate this trend of PC cases with tempered glass and lights I think they are so unattractive. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I miss how computers used to be elegant and without a side panel window. Computers like the original IBM PC, Amiga, Atari ST, Sun Microsystems, NeXT Cube, Silicon Graphics etc. Are there any PC cases that have the same look and feel of computers of these eras?

The rosewill line M was my first pc case and I just bought one again on ebay now that they are discontinued, it's retro for a different era than beige imo, but the 2010-2014 pc gaming era, when prices were insanely cheap and a bunch of people came into the space. I built my first pc ever with a dual core i3 (with hyperthreading!), 8 gb of ddr3 1600 mhz, a 500 gb wd blue hard drive, and eventually an r7 265. It was a venerable little rig, especially once I put in a gtx 970. Eventually I converted down to an itx pc before selling it and moving on. But now I am building another budget rig and was feeling nostalgic, so I'm back to the little rosewill minimalist retro chiq mini tower. (I don't recommend the case unless you can get it for $40 or so, not the $80 that I had to pay for one on ebay)

I use a 3.5" front bay for a combo flash card/USB panel. What a luxury to be able to insert a real SD card into a computer without drama. Modern cases don't even give you a proper option for reading a micro SD. And who decided that I was never to watch a DVD or listen to a CD again? It may be more of a steam punk look, but the Cooler Master HAF XB Evo cube is still being manufactured, is built like a tank, and is easily had for $150. I mounted a Blitz BA-R9 sound bar across the top rear for my speaker solution and it is precisely the width of the case. Looks a bit like a range or a washing machine. Another advantage of the cube form factor is that there is no strain on the MB from a big air cooler or a heavy GPU. Somebody sold a white painted one on ebay August 14 '22 if you want to see what that looks like. Thanks for this badly-needed video.

Exturnal USB 3 5.25 inch drive bays exist thankfully, so you can install a proper full sized bluray burner on a PC.
No luck for floppies though, they make USB adapter cards but no suitable exturnal drive bays/cases

You only briefly mentioned peripherals, I have to point out that modern, black, mechanical PS/2 keyboards are available. The one I have is QPAD Mk-50, and it's available with Cherry MX Reds, Blues, and Browns, though I've never seen it with Browns, but all good switches. The only bad thing is that the actual PS/2 connector is very brittle and if you're not careful the pins will easily bend or break off.
It's pretty common and cheap on the used market where I'm from. No idea about Ebay pricing.

And the very first case is the Rosewill Line-M. I built a sort of sleeper in this! 3700XT, Big Shuriken 3 cooler, B450 MATX board, RX 5600 XT, 32 gb (8x8gb) ddr4 3400, 500gb m.2 sata ssd, 2 tb hdd, 750w PSU. Using it right now!
I replaced the blue front fan and the rear fan with Arctic F12 PWM fans. I think the original fans were there to use up old stock, since the ones in my case had *molex* connectors that powered the fans and in the case of the front fan, the led as well.

If you get a VSK-4000 DO NOT use the thumbscrews throw them away and replace them. The ones on mine had undersized threads and one had actually defective threads that stripped the hole. I ended up having to send it back for a replacement. If you use decent thumbscrews this isn't a problem and it's otherwise a good case.

I can't recommend the cheaper Rosewill cases. They are so thin they will buckle and flex when you pick up to move the computer. Not saying all their cases are this bad, but the lower end ones are crazy cheap and low quality.
One thing I like about old PC cases, even the brand name computers of the 90s is the build quality is quite high. Even if they lack rge fancy look and LED lights of modern cases.

Unfortunately none of the micro-ATX are usable, as no vintage/retro (depending on how you define vintage/retro) motherboards will be fit with only 4 slots at the back.

    • @greatwavefan397

Likewise most retro ATX motherboards have eight expansion slots, whereas most modern ATX cases have seven.

Nzxt atx Hades. Been rocking this case for 13 years. Paid 99 bucks then, only had to replace 240 mm side fan once. Go figure, no fan fits on the side panel with bigger"gpu, rx 6600 asus with stupid power cable on the "face" .The rise or face of power cable snapped the fan blade because I wasn't paying attention to how tight this case is. Still, been searching for older design pc cases. None. Unless you want to pay big money for a case, new pc cases are crap, and tout massive air flow. All rgb crap and flash. This old case is a friggin NASA wind tunnel. Nzxt, you dropped the ball and followed the mainstream. How about a re-imagined atx Hades?

I just wish I could find a new case, with at least 3x 5.25" bays, and with build quality to rival my much loved Silverstone FT02. I'd have no reason to upgrade if it weren't for the fact that some newer GPUs have such long heatpipes, that there can be cooling problems as the result of the FT02's rotated motherboard orientation.
