I fixed that steering in my 165. Loose feed back mechanism in front behind grill. I put a gas shock on a 966b CAT which wobbled on feed back rod cured it. Excellent 👍
The "wobble" started in the UK in 1965 with the MF 175 fitted with 7.50x19 front wheels with heavy cast centres, took MF quite awhile before they cured it, of coarse knowing MF, it had to be cheap! 2 discs were fitted on the bottom of the king pin, one having serrations on it, ALL cured.
Just finished changing the axle legs, spindles and bushings on my MF 270 with a loader - huge improvement. I was lucky, my centre axle pivot was in good shape and didn’t need to be replaced.
YOU DA MAN JT!! I have a '71 175 that I don't have that problem yet thankfully, but I have multiple one row Farmalls Cubs and 130 HiClear that I thought of doing this to them a long time ago thinking it should work...now I know it will. BUT I take some of these Farmalls to shows and the Farmall Police and purest will outwardly make fun of me while after seeing it works go back and do it theirs cause this problem is notorious in the one row Farmalls!!! The purest Farmall owners that will call me out, do not use their tractors for nothing but "trailer queens" and "parade wavers" ... I STILL use my tractors and need to solve working problems the simplest and cheapest way possible !! Thanks again! Wayne W. NC
Never had that with the 35 up to 185 , but have more than once been driving wide open down to the yard pulling a load of hay with my feet jammed tight on the rod ends to try and stop it wobbling the wheel out of my hands.. same with the Universal..
Hey JT. Love your show..my dad is a retired test engineer from massy Ferguson..I grew up on that same tractor to..and a few 1100s ..if you have a lot of play in the tie rods make sure you have enough toe in.. measure the front center rib to front center rib ..then the same on the back..he told me it should be one to two inches closer on the front mesurement that the back ..that would keep the play forced tight ..love your show..seems though the damper worked anyway 😊
It's good to see someone taking interest in the old masseys..they are extremely rare here in south Georgia..massey Ferguson had a test farm here in Boston GA..on the Florida line..500 acer farm.. they dug a 100 acre lake on the aucilla river ..its on the google map..they closed it down in the mid seventies..they wanted my dad to relocate to Michigan but he took early retirement..i spent many days with him riding on tractors ..hard to believe the abuse they put those tractors through to develope them..
Never had that issue with our 165. The throttle and pto power were the 2 main issues. Our 165 was used primarily on the manure spreader and silo blower. Our 78’ 275 has power steering and radiator issues. Hoping the power steering cylinder can be rebuilt. I’m dreading tearing that apart. Your videos give me inspiration to work on it and bring back memories to my childhood.
Rebuilding the power steering cylinder on those is very straight forward, you'll easily be able to do that at home. I have a video about it on my channel.
Quick fix. The proper way to fix this is to take the bushings out of the steering control pivot arm where the hydraulic cylinder connects to replace with new ones. That's usually always the problem.
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 you know all the tractors have their problems red, blue, green, orange even the new ones. The older ones you can still work on yourself and still get parts. The Massey's had some incredible engineering back in the day like the perkins engine you can rebuild it like 4-5 times. Fuel efficient and tons of torque
I came in for lunch 2 hours ago and thought I would watch a RUclips video or 2. Your channel popped up. 2 hours later I’m still watching and I don’t even like Masseys. Turd Fergusen is cool though. Good channel.
On IMT 560 (basically Yugoslav version of MF 155) power steering cylinder was placed in the similar way. I am now thinking how to make it have tighter radius, since it is notoriously clumsy.
The wobbling wheel... i remember that issue with a Case IH i drove 3 times back to the dealer to get that issue out of the way. The farmer wasn't happy with the first repairs. That Case IH was an in England build one... The farmar also had a 35X wich i drove a lot... also a Landini wich is the sister of Massey Ferguson Yesterday (April 2nd 2023) i discoverd your channel... and the Massey Ferguson fan as i am i had to watch and subscribe! I love these older tractors of MF. The first tractor i drove was a Massey Ferguson 35X my grandfathers tractor, still my favorite... And i think it is still a bloody shame that tractor got sold... Yes i like the tractors of Massey-Ferguson... the last one i drove was a 6270. Thinking wich models i drove: 35X ,135, 590, 690, 3050, 3080 6270 maybe not much but always fun from one brand or another back to the Massey Ferguson
Everything in the front end of mine is well worn. To the point that traveling on two lane roads with any traffic is scary.. she's prone to swap lanes almost completely of her own volition.. lol yeah , done puckered all the foam off the seat. So even though kudos for the quick fix i want to tighten everything back up. Like you say the 165's are one of the best ever made.... Lol
Enjoyed your video . I have a 235 that needs that fix but cannot see the details of where and how you mounted it . Can u share details as to the part number damper and pictures of detailed brackets and where exactly it was mounted thanks.
It was just a generic steering damper from a Jeep Cherokee I believe. The box is loooong gone. I extended the damper to 1/2 open, bolted it to the collar of the outer tie Rod, and welded a piece of angle iron near the center of the axle. That’s about all there was to it. Hope that helps a little. Wasn’t much to it, just did my best to make it work
I’m sure I could use bushings in mine too, I believe that everything is 1970 original! I’ll probably dive into the front end properly this winter. Thanks for watching!
Always liked the look of the MF 100 series. Except that rear wheel center on high arch models. Just plain ugly.
You should get uk headlights for your Massey.
I fixed that steering in my 165.
Loose feed back mechanism in front behind grill.
I put a gas shock on a 966b CAT which wobbled on feed back rod cured it.
Excellent 👍
What a beautiful tractor!

Got to say andy you know your shit down to the tire and year
Dam, that's neat knowlege.. I know can only remember stuff from 50 odd yrs ago , and struggle to remember how many hoves a nag is supposed to have..
"Cool"!!!!
Just finished changing the axle legs, spindles and bushings on my MF 270 with a loader - huge improvement. I was lucky, my centre axle pivot was in good shape and didn’t need to be replaced.
I have a 165 multipower as well. I need to work on the steering and fix the multipower

You nailed it 100%! The farmall guys will just be jealous they didn’t do it first😉. Thank you for watching!

I used to drive a 188 multi power great tractor

I’ll double check the tow on that. It’s been working like a charm for a year now, my band aid repair has been beautiful !

Great idea I have a farm pro 2420 with manual steering and it has that wobble thanks
Welcome back!! Too many projects not enough time in a day, and then work gets in the way too!!
Great idea I got a 255 Massey it wholbled like crazy till I changed ty rods now have no prob
Quick fix. The proper way to fix this is to take the bushings out of the steering control pivot arm where the hydraulic cylinder connects to replace with new ones. That's usually always the problem.
That’s exactly what’s going on with this one. At some point it will get the proper treatment

Had a 285mf,had to put new bushing on the center pin turn shaft
As a jeep owner I recognized the death wobble right away and thought “ he needs a steering stabilizer “ 🤣.
Is that a gas or diesel I got my dads 165 it’s a 64 or 65 it’s a diesel with the 203 Perkins
That has a 212 Perkins gasser in it.
Nice to see you made a video again it's been a long time Chris England
"ps "I" "Love Sweet Fluffy" !!!
Now thats cool. HELL of an idea.
Good job, nice video. FLUFFY looked good too.
we had this problem it was a track rod

Still catching up on old videos, nice fix.
PS, Fluffy, no offense but eat a salad ever no and then.🙂
A salad wouldn’t hurt her any 😆😆
Very clever! Really good idea

Your a fart smeller JT . I mean a smart fella! 😅 you do awesome work, really enjoy your videos.
Thanks! I appreciate that!!!
I put 3 100LB weights on the weight bar of my 165, and it "fixed" the problem.
ok..how do your get the wobble out of a narrow (tricyle) narrow front 165
That’s a good question
How do you get to steering box adjustment for the backlash in the steering wheel?
Same issue on my 231, will have to try that fix. Really good idea, thank you for sharing it.
what kind of rim and tire is on the front i have a 265 i wan to place float tires on the front
Those are 11l-15’s
Me gusta mucho los tractores Massey Ferguson, me gustó la forma como arreglaste la dirección, muy sencilla, excelente.
Can you put on description the part you got and from where
I like the fix it works on my 73 Ford 4wheel drive to

Agreed! This is still holding up perfectly a year later
We have the same tractor and I does the same thing
nice smart idea ! :)
Cheap fix :)
Thanks for posting JT
Any time!
Neat band aid fix. The last minute: There you go saying positive things. Let's hope the universe wasn't listening! Have an uneventful harvest!
Thank you! Fingers crossed it all goes well!
Thanks it is always great to see your videos
Take off those big tires
Very nice and smart
Thanks!
Where are you located sir?
Good video JT, ran across your channel about a month ago. hello from southern Arkansas!
Hello! Thanks for checking me out, I appreciate it!
👌 Nice!!! I need to do that on my 275.
Wondering if you had to disconnect the battery when you welded 🤔
Always do

@@jtsbarnngrill6873 thanks so much. Not sure what you mean by the box is long gone? Do u still have the tractor to send pics of the installation?
The box the damper came in. I can send pics. Got a email?
What size are the front tires? I have a 165 that needs a set of wider fronts.
Those are 11L-15’s
My 255 massy has the same thing with the wheels .I found out it was the wheel bushings ..problem solved.
I’m sure I could use bushings in mine too, I believe that everything is 1970 original! I’ll probably dive into the front end properly this winter. Thanks for watching!
grill or welcome
You talking about where the piece is that runs through the center of the frame on tractor?
Why don't you get a clip on Mike. Sometimes you talk too far away from your camera.
I fail to see how that is going to help with the front end.
There's always one!
My dads case 1175 front had the wobbles on it. We just lived with it. Would of been a easy fix i see now
Nice model. No power shift to cause repair issues. Lasted for over 9600 hrs. And was still working great. Manual shift. Reliability
Same displacement as the 1270
451 turbo
Well done sir!
Butter than a flux capacitor.warp speed to the field ! Well done JT
Thank you my friend!
Excellente idée!
Simple as that and still good enough 🙂
Still working good too!
looking forward to seeing the new combine in action
Right on! Gonna get it out in the next week or so!
