This time it’s the man himself and not his tools that steals the show, never knew Gaston could move that fast.
Looks like Gaston was running the show
His name is Gaston, no one like Gaston…
@@TheMelbournelad I know his name is Gaston, that’s why I wrote it
@@kristofferholst6053 beauty and the beast reference
Man moves like a puma
We bought this shed at the beginning of July. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxe81Bz076USDt6sYU1rDcNa2LwCIKADgB It’s built now and just needs painting. The instructions were clear and concise. All the parts were there and in excellent condition.
We didn't come here for the tools, nor for the construction tips or even for proper building methods. We're all here for Scott shouting "Scott Brown here" whilst jumping into frame like some golden retriever.
This is not untrue
Facts
Love your videos. It's fantastic you were able to assemble such a great team to help you with the beam. Particularly like Gaston getting his hands dirty. I'm surprised he didn't bring some fancy gadget to lift the beam that comes in a systainer.
Sustainer 😂 that would of been so cool if he did
007 nailer . Gaston as Q. This episode just keeps getting better.
Very cool. But you missed your one chance to use "Beam me up Scotty!" Love the vids, you and Jess do a great job. Thanks!
I liked at the end when you just looked around, reflected and walked in a circle and admired the work you and your team has done. This beam was obviously a big momentous stage in your build and now sets you off on being able to complete so much more. Awesome work Scott
It's so heartwarming to see all those people you worked with, helping you out. Nowdays It's hard to know good people, but I guess that you get what you give and you are for sure a good human beign. Can't wait for the next video 💪🖤
The lifting team is very multinational, a handful of Kiwis, a Scotsman, a Dutchman, a German and a Spaniard lifting a beam made in Palmerston North. Its the United Nations in Scott's house
A United Nations that is actually effective… Cheers to all who participated!
@Scott Brown Carpentry. Thank you for bringing us along for another truly exciting and nail biting episode. You assembled a great team (of friends and Jess) that got the job accomplished. Glad no one got hurt getting those LVL beams in place. I also hope Jess' shoulder gets better soon.
Hope everyone stays safe and well.
So so good …. In fact, excellent work with all your team of Professionals. Great to see Gaston too. It was stressful watching, however you had done your homework and it went well. It was like watching an Installation being installed .. a piece of engineering and art together! Well done Scott & Jess of SBC 👍😎🎉
3:43 one of the best reveals I’ve ever seen!
In your intro, you were beaming with happiness! Thanks again, mate! You were super brave cutting the ends of the beams!!!
Scott and Jess, Been watching your show for ages and I’ve commented a few times, but have forgotten to mention that your style of delivery has given me the confidence to tackle jobs around the house. I appreciate that you are down to earth, self-deprecating and knowledgeable… but you also break down big jobs into sections which in turn, shows the average Joe how manageable things can be.
Now I’m not replacing a beam or footing to my house but your videos did give me the confidence to build a beautiful deck off the side of our house this summer… in fact, as my friend came to help out French doors in… I constantly was laughing and quoting your “but can he hang a door” story.
So, thank you! If you ever come to Canada, Vancouver Island specifically. Beers on us 🙌
congrats to Scott & Cheers to the beam lifting crew....
I'm in the beginning of renovating my 1917 home in Springfield, MO, USA and you've convinced me to hire an architect.
Memories , i had to do a similar job on my reno . Mine was into a 2 storey house , its great to have some eager helpful friends . Well done
I have to say Scott you make it so enjoyable to watch . I had a good laugh too.😁
I love seeing the connections both you and Jess have made to help you in your quest to improve your home. Another fantastic video, and can i just say - that beam is frigging HUGE!!!!
Loving following the process, Scott! Thank you💪🏻
Really enjoyed this episode and good to see all the help coming to the beam raising. Well done all of you
What a team! So glad you have a village around you already in your new home town
From an historians point of view for a house with no architectural merit the amount of work that is going into it is mind blowing. It is very interesting to witness the NZ building code and how much stricter it is than here in Canada. I hope you enjoy it for a very long time.
I used to see some Canadian builder guy on tv, he would go to houses and correct faults, he always complained about poor Canadian building regulations.
Mike Holmes perhaps?
@@simonsimon557 Probably !
Well, a lot of the work is because Scott obviously enjoys carpentry and because it's interesting to watch. For example, he could have saved money and energy with simple vinyl replacement windows but it's much more interesting to watch him rebuild the existing wood sashes with double glazed panels. Scott puts in the work, gets the views and in return gets free materials and tools and sponsorships. Not sure what you mean about the stricter NZ building code - NZ has a huge mold problem because of lax building codes over the years.
@@wallyballou7417 Hmmm, I did not know that. By stricter building codes I meant the rules for earthquakes etc. You make an excellent point about his show. Thank you.
At times like this you always know who your friends are Scott, perfectly marked out for the beam to fit like a glove. Thanks for the latest exciting episode.👍👍
Perfect way to spend an afternoon
Hey there! Just something that came to my mind when watching this video. 11:20 this is the reason why we dont/rarely use impactdrivers in Germany in woodworking. Just not needed. Some carpenters use it on site for some heavy duty screws when they build barns or the roof structure with footlong screws, but in furniturebuilding or normal construction we always use normal drills like you do there. Using impactdrivers is a thing/phenomenon that came to Germany by watching youtube i think and is mostly used by hobbyists and not by craftsmen. Greetings Chris
This whole video had such a great vibe. Love following your work. Had a good giggle at "you're" grammatical error at the end too 😅
Now to look up the Dalton's
Fantastic to see everyone helping get those beams in. And man that Gaston can move!!
Truly an international effort!! Awesome job, glad it went so well, you have excellent help.
I think it would be a good idea to strap the underside of the rafters across the cut to maintain a tension path (probably part of the reason they were lapped in the first place) and prevent roof spread. To deal with the offset you could sister on some timber to the rafters on one side of the cut so you can run the straps straight.
I'm sure the engineer calculated for that. Those joist brackets are strong as hell when fully nailed off
@@Nickvin Strong for vertical loads, yes, but comparatively low for axial tension.
Impressive beam. Good work crew, all knew what to do & when to change position.
Last time I saw one of those beams, Holmes on Homes was in San Fransisco doing a charity build, His nail guns were just bouncing off the beam, he had to drill & screw, couldn't even hammer nails in!
Laminating those beams is easier than in Australia, here we have to glue them together first with sika bond, then nail together, then screw together with batten screws.
I did a beam similar to this a couple of months ago, it was a combined hanging and strutting beam, but it was three LVL beams. It was HARD work!
What a great team efforts of SBC Neilson department🎉
Team work makes the dream work. Nice.
Wow one helluva job getting them in there...but can already see the benefit it's going to make in opening up that whole area...the work is certainly worth the outcome...the house will be totally transformed just by this one part of the overall works...great job by one n all...and kudos to Jess for the outstanding filmwork 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 great job 🙂🙂🙂🙂
It's all in the planning that Scott does well, well generally! The old adage, measure twice, cut once. Well planned from start to finish the only thing I would have done is except I would have had a ladder ready to put under the beam for the second part of the lift, just in case, muscles faded. Great camera work by Jess too.
Hey Scott! Another extra to compensate for the compromised lateral load (exterior walls falling outwards), you spoke about with the little diagram, would be to put straps along the under side of the joist and up the side of the beam, before installing the joist hanger. As at the moment it’s just a few product nails into the beam that’s essentially holding the truss type system (triangle) together 🧐👌🏼
Rate the videos, I have learnt a lot and you’ve definitely helped me become more thorough!!
Keep up the exciting videos
I had same concern
I suppose a few screws interspersed between the nails would help with that. The nails being less resistant than screws from being pulled out directly.
5:25 I love the Lucky Luke reference :)
SBC episodes are awesome but SBC community bits are the best! Great to see the collaboration with all our favourite contributors! (P - needs to come next time! 🥰 )
Bro the hikoki 1/2 inch impact wrench is super ideal for driving bugles into LVL I used to have one when I worked for carters doing remedial fix ups they are great when you have a ton of stud lok screws to put in the smaller impact drivers are great but I have burned them out before
It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s ruclips.net/user/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
Nice work boys and girls.
i did a very similar job to this today with taking out old load bearing walls. lots of joist hangers, i wish i had that metal connector!!!
Nice job. You have some really great friends
Arc tan ( 130 / 8500 ), yeah, that’s 0.876 degrees off… about 3/16 over a foot, or 15mm over a meter, no one will ever know, unless they watched this video😅 nice job!
" 3/16 " otherwise you are saying three sixteenthth.
love that little moment at the end where you're standing there looking at your work, the body language reads 'yeah! I did that!'
Pretty much me every time I finish mowing the lawns 😂
Nice work Scott!!! I'll be doing this at my house in about 2 weeks. Nice to see it go so smoothly for you.
Lucky Luke reference - awesome !! Yes , just like the Daltons
Great to have good friends like that to help 👍👍👍
Love Gaston's personality, such an amazing man running with the ladder to save the day was both heart warming and some serious entertainment value!
Running with ladders not a great idea, a couple of moments were pretty sketchy but congrats on a job well done in the end
Wow that whent well..... big step closer to the new house
They’re called PPN (positive placement nailers) in the UK, another awesome and informative video Scott 🤙🏻
Victory! This is what makes this a remodeled home.
Nice piece of Timber!
you're al bearing up remarkably well.
*Many hands make light work...... and that's how the mighty beam got put up.*
Truly a quality episode, great planning and execution!
We actually stopped using our impacts to put in Bugles. Drill works so nice. Normally on speed 1 or 2 on a dewalt drill. 👌
really nice work, I never knew you would need so much screws to laminate those beams, but it must feel good knowing there is an abundance of screws holding your house up
Another great victory was created today! Well done to Scott & Jess's team!
How many Kiwis does it take to raise a beam? Only two, with half of Europe pitching in!! Great international episode.
Gonna do exactly this in the new year, thanks heaps!
That beam is a big improvement! (Pun shamelessly intended. 😉)
As so many others have already said, great friends and great team work.
G,day Scott Brown Carpentry from Sydney Australia.
* "A little carpet over the window sill" when sliding beams in.
* Very professional job especially the mechanical connection of two beams together (alternative to M10 gal bolts).
🌏🇭🇲
Another great show.
What a payoff, and great to see the nelson gang come together to get it done!
Ray: Makes a reference to Lucky Luke and the Daltons.
Scott: Crickets.
Almost like a barn raising!
A Lucky Luke reference in 2022... Brilliant!!
awesome mahi mahi mahi mahi Scott Brown CarPentry cuzzy rory is here. bro
Always know I'm gonna have a good start to the day when I see a new Scott Brown video pop up!
Great work!
Sounds like you had a Dutchie giving a hand there! Great video.
I've got the Bostitch "hanger banger" joist hanger nailer. They are lifesavers! That Hikoki unit looks great. Well done on the beam to everyone that helped!
Oh man, the Scott Brown Avengers episode. I have to admit, I was hoping for a post credit Paeru and Richard scene... Absolutely great episode this week.
Like the Daltons off Lucky Luke! .. Ray showing his European heritage.
I use the Bostitch PN50 palm nailer. It means dragging around an air hose and manually loading each nail, but it's super quick and can get into tight spaces where even a standard hammer can't go. After the first dozen or so nails, you get the hang of it and the magnetic head for holding the nail is nearly as quick as a full size nailer with a strip of nails.
Ooh that was a biggun, Job well done. Cannae wait fur the rest o the demolition to start.😃
I am interetsed to know how come you didnt use an impact wrench for the batten screws? I use them all the time in my job and i use a Hikoki 770nm impact wrench. Alot less stress and wear on the impact driver and goes in effortlessly
On the off chance you see this. I’d put a strap or something from joist to joist across the new beam to prevent spreading of the lower chord. Threaded rod through the beam or something.
great job scott
Thats what you call a good day of work 👏🏻
Looks great!
The victorious arms in the air at the end says it all! A good day's work 👷
Love new sound track
Happy for you Scotty! Having that big beam in-place must be a load off your shoulders (heh). Enjoying the content and love seeing the reno come together
funny the dutchman didnt need a ladder to lift that beam. Goed bezig Raymond!
No hernias, but Jess nearly shat herself when she thought you were cutting that beam wrong.
hope the Camber is in the correct position..........😊
Hahaha that is fookin mental. Hope you fed them all after and got them suitably pished 🤣
Considering they have to drive home, maybe wait for a weekend party to celebrate & have a sleep over.
So happy to hear that Jess isn't homeless after the roof cutting! LOL!!! Thanks for posting Scott (and Jess)!!!
The 2 videos this week have been really great, definitely got me motivated
I put a 28 foot double LVL into my brother's house about a decade ago.
Fortunately I could simply hang the ceiling joists from it.
Sliding them in through the gable end of two storey house was interesting....
Damn fine work.
Spray foaming the roof you wouldn't have to worry about venting the roof or worry about the beam height as much
If you would have done one demo job on houses like these, there wouldn't be any nervous feeling ;)
The power of friendship
Brother, they make things called 'Genie Lifters' for exactly this job, lifting long heavy beams, you get them from Hire shops..
Raymond is my new favourite sitcom character
"Scotty, five to beam up!" 🖖
Mint 👍
This was fun! Congrats Scott!
