    I became a DM because I wanted to play but had no DM. So I taught myself and have never played a session as a player. It's been a year now and after experience and research I've realized that it would have been SO much more difficult if it wasn't for 5e. It's intuitive even without overcomplicating the game. Love it.

      Now a year later we know that we'll get an update in 2024
      But that'll probably be like 3e to 3.5 and not a completely new edition

    Really hard to believe that WoTC got something so right, but 5e really is the best D&D that has ever been, and I've been playing since the early 80's.

      Dan Williams It has a lot of things going for it. I'd say from top to bottom it is the most well thought out system. They really benefited from the open play test and that they spent two years working with their consumers. I was really not interested in 5th Edition when the play test first started. It seemed like it was basically going to rehash 3rd Edition which I played to death. I've never been so happy to be wrong.

    2nd edition rules. It had the most books and the most amount of places to go (Ravenloft, Planescape, Spelljammer, Birthright, Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Dragon Lance, etc.).

      @@edandchris5752 no that's 4e. 2nd edition was great minus a few rediclous things like the rules for Psonics (holy hell I still have nightmares about those) for the 80's-90's but long over stayed it's welcome by time 3rd edition was out. But 2nd edition wasn't shit. Hell I bet you were too young to have played 2nd edition during it's heyday.

    great reviews! You convinced me I ordered the 3 core books tonight. I'll play some sessions with the gang see how it goes. I doubt we'll drop Pathfinder on-going campaign since we have close to 60 pathfinder & 3.5 books. I have not gotten got 4th because of wizards greedily dropping the OGL but now since their bring some kind of this back I'll try 5th out

      DravenSwiftbow Holy fuck, i only DMd 2e for a LOOONG time. It kept the control of the game up to the DM, while still allowing for nice character customization. I have a million of houserules for 2e, and i thought for the longest time that it had come as far as it could ever come to being the system i wanted. A friend started DMing 5e 2 weeks ago and, finally, i feel like im ready to put 2e to rest. Everythings so streamlined, simple, easy to explain to beginners, flexible and resonable. No rules bloat, no evident power creep, no deadly pitfalls when picking stuff at leveling. No taking 5 hours to creat a character from scratch. No awfull character customization.
      Im in love.

    Agree 100%! I haven't played D&D since 3.5 Edition's glory days. I was introduced into D&D to actually play ( I knew of it and was interested in it since the 80's but had no idea how/where/why to get into it) when 3rd Edition was closing out and 3.5 made it's large entrance, I was in High School at the time. Loved playing, every aspect was great and made better with great friends. however as school closed out, my friends and i drifted apart and I had no way to really jump back into D&D. so It faded from my hobbies and dropped off entirely. Well fast forward to the large announcements of 5th Edition, I completely and utterly check out D&D itself, out of curiosity and to see what was going on with it. Talk about timing! Well, not only was the new edition of D&D confirmed and coming soon, not only was it being worked on harder than ever before....but it featured as the mascot.... TIAMAT. I can not tell you enough, the sheer, raw excitement I had over this. Tiamat for as long as I can remember as been my favorite aspect of D&D characters. She is the Deity I love and worship within D&D :3 but I find so much about her, the Chromatic Dragons and the Cult of Dragon just immensely fascinating. I could have NOT picked a better opportunity to jump back into D&D.
    Well, here I am with the entire starting lineup of books, all five of them and it;s been one of the best investments for my time and money ^-^! I haven't had a chance to scour every single page of the books, word for word but from what I have gone through kept a grin on my face :D! I really hope WOTC takes their time, keeping a few months in-between book releases. I also hope that they return to some truly mesmerizing books and their themes. With 3.5 Edition the Monster Manual, Book of Vile Darkness, Sandstorm and Deitie & Demigods were my favorite books to supplement D&D. Even though I did not play any D&D with 4th Edition, I decided to pick up a few supplemental books while I waited for 5th Edition to start hitting circulation. I picked up Planes Below, Underdark and Open Grave. Now, to be perfectly honest, those three books are going to last me a LOOOONG time for my own created Adventures and Campaigns :]! Let's hope WOTC gets enough positive response and support so they can keep on the right track! 3-3.5 Edition was a mess of OP situations and flimsy rules (still love the content nonetheless) while 4th Edition was rushed out too fast, with only a few diamonds, hidden in the rough with terrible books and a worse business model.
    Thanks for the review and even though my mind has long been made up on 5th Edition, it's still wonderful to hear others thoughts on it!

      Didn't read but proceeds to judge a person according to a few lines...typical internet tosh. I grew up in the late 80's and most of my friends were older than I was, because of them I was introduced to Magic the Gathering, D&D and Warhammer. I was fascinated by their stories, the books some of them had, despite not being a part of their group, Iwas equally enthralled by them and what my imagination conjoured. Just because I was young and didn't number crunch or draw up complete adventures does NOT say I had no interest in D&D. The 1st and 2nd Edition are still widely loved and played to this day. If you're so quick to judge or try to be witty, just do us all a favor and fade away into the anonymity of the internet.

    I got into D&D during 4th edition and absolutely loved it, but the only draw back was the price. You touched on the topic of price in the video, and to tell you the truth I'd rather put that hard earned money towards an actual PC game than a $30-$70 book. Love D&D but with the cost and the draw back of finding some one to actually play the game with you, PC games are more for me. If Wizards of the coast actually wants players to remain loyal, they need to lower their expectations on cost for D&D, remember it's not MTG.

    The only thing bugging min 5e is the rogue is almost always hidden and always doing massive damage, more then the fighter, at range or in melee

    • @andariousrosethorn
      @andariousrosethorn 8 лет назад +4

      You're looking at hit for hit. Rogue's can only hide if they have some concealment available or another feature or spell allowing them to hide. Even still a fighter's got more attacks/round starting at 5 which adds up fast as well they can either improved critical, battlemaster dice, or offensive spell options. At the end of the day the fighter can do a LOT more damage, especially with options like Action Surge.

    Great review.
    I like Inspiration but it never seems to be used enough on the RUclips videos I see. My personal take is that it is a way for a Player to be rewarded for good roleplaying: choosing a course of action that might not be the optimal solution but "it's what my character would do". For example, the party are chasing some bandits back to their hideout. A character who has a Flaw of being hasty/rushing into things without thinking them through ought to get Inspiration for attacking immediately without a plan. They will probably need it to counter the various defences the bandits will use. Conversely a notorious planner-character who has to think things through, considering all angles before acting, should also get Inspiration for taking this approach as it would give the bandits extra time to prepare a nasty surprise in this situation.
    It should also be awarded for entertaining play, giving others a laugh and just generally making the game fun. That's just my opinion of course. If you go two or three sessions and no-one gets Inspiration, that's as bad as everyone getting it every session to me - the balance should be somewhere in between. The two times I got Inspiration I gave it away both times - one we had to take out a wizard (Glasstaff) really quickly so I gave it to the only character near enough to hit him when we rolled Initiative (giving Advantage on the Initiative Roll). I forgot the other use but it would've been a similar situation. (Note this is 'giving' as in one character giving their Inspiration Point to another to use rather than the Players awarding it to each other as you mention.)
    Really enjoyed your video, thanks again.

    after trying the free rules, I have bought every thing. I totally agree that it feels like a return to the golden age of D&D with the building of characters no longer the focus of players and a return to adventuring and playing as the top priority. I've even stopped using floor tiles with my two groups and just let them describe what they are doing like we used to back in the 80's. 5th is a must try for any D&D fan past or present.

    I mean, you're right, objectively speaking $210 for the core books is not pocket change. However, the books are gorgeous, high quality and durable, and the years of play they produce for whole groups of people makes them pennies in terms of even the cheapest hobbies. I only recently got into it. I had played before, did not enjoy it, but was asked, out of the blue, to help a newer DM friend describe the game and build the story (because I am a writer). I discovered I loved the DM role and got hooked that way. The first thing I noticed was just how much value I got for money compared to my many other hobbies. If you like it, the books are worth the price.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  9 лет назад

      +Rory Stevens That is totally true my main concern with the price is that only physical retail stores will be charging those prices such as Local Gaming Stores, each of the books have been heavily discounted online which will prompt a lot of people to go to Amazon rather than their local store. One of my best friends used to own a game store and I know the profit margins on those books are not great to begin with. The problem is worse here in Canada as the Canadian Dollar has dropped quite a bit. The retail price for Out if the Abyss went from $57 to $63.95

    • @RoryStarr
      @RoryStarr 9 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I'm Canadian as well, but I do live near the stores. That said, if they factor in shipping, the difference isn't as dramatic. Especially when you count that you won't have to wait for it.

      "Durable" the pages of both my own PHB and my friend's started to fall out in similar places, which is odd because we take care with them. The art and presentation are great but in our experience they really don't hold together well.

    Great review sir. My view is 5e has the charm and enthusiasm of 1st ed AD&D with an excellent modern streamlined, balanced and robust engine driving it. I've been playing since the late 1970's and this is the best version yet. It may be one of the best RPGs yet made.

      Mglosk 5th gives you way more freedom 1st was limited. so I am not sure how you can say what you can say.. One simple example, is that first didn't have many races/classes. Need I keep going? 1e was so limited.

      There were rules in 1st edition to play monster races, it was talked about also in the dungeon masters guide. 1st edition allowed you to tweek rules any way you wanted. You could do anything in first edition and it was done. They had rules on using guns. They had psionics, and it goes on and on. The rules in 3rd 3.5, mostly 4th were so absolute that it was barely fun anymore.

      I agree 100%. Three things told me it was the beggining of the end. 1. 2cd Edition. 2. Gygax leaving TSR, 3. Dragon Lance.
      After that, AD&D went down hill. 2cd edition just felt like a money trap. New book after new book of useless class buff kits.
      The rules were so detailed in 1st edition, yet didn't hold anyone back from doing anything.
      You could make a class, even play as a monster. The DM's guide had rules on that in the very beginning.
      You could also create a character in 1/2 hour.
      As apposed to the all day character creation that most of the games nowadays are like.
      I could go on, but it would take as long as making a bard.

    I'm looking for a game like 3.5. Is this what I'm looking for? Pathfinder would have been great. But I didn't like the hero factor. And the bonuses for race werent realistic. Also I ddidnt like the way the class skills were. In that you gained a plus 3 on class skills. I liked the 3.5 system.

      +Steve Gusky The current addition plays a lot like AD&D, the rules are ultimately up to the DM unlike 3rd and 4th Edition which tried to have a comprehensive rules structure that led to way too much arguments between player's and DM's. I would recommend at least trying the Free Basic Rules to see how you feel about it.

      You might want to check out this page: dnd.wizards.com/dungeons-and-dragons/start-playing It has the free basic rules that you can use as a start. If you're looking to purchase books the Player's Handbook is essential, but I also recommend getting the Monster Manual and the Dungeon Masters Guide probably in that order. If you can find it the Starter Set might also be worth getting even before the PHB, it comes with some basic rules, pre-generated characters and a decent set of dice. Best of luck!

    I am glad that the combat system is more like AD&D because it make mor place for roleplaying and for the story to flow. I tried to play third edition with a group I met a few years later and the GM did a very chessy story and our characters did not have any depth. However we spent so much time in combat with minis, the chart and rulers to calculate the distance, that we just did not have time for storytelling. Sometimes combat could take 20 to 40 minutes. So I understood why he did not put any effort to make a good story since combat was actually the main game. I hope this new system bring back players who were more into roplay and story telling into playing D&D again.

      That's kind of a hard question to answer. 1st & 2nd Edition lasted about 11 years each. 3.0 ran from 2000-2003, 3.5 lasted from 2003-2008, 4th Edition technically lasted 6 years until 2014, but in reality it was only supported from 2008 until 2012. 5th Edition will hopefully last 8-10 years. However many people still play older editions. If you like 5th then you really don't need to switch if they release 6th Edition ( which again is hopefully several years away)

    nice, explicit review. I'd just like to point out that what you criticize about inspiration (~encourages players to do things just for mechanical rewards) is a common flaw of the system. Don't you agree that D&D players tend to kill any being on sight just to earn that extra experience (also a mechanical reward), rather than trying to actually roleplay and avoid a bloodshed? Inspiration finally offers a mechanical reward to avoid mindless carnage - an option I find very attractive especially in a combat focused system. +Leader Sheep I see exactly where you are coming from. To be honest I really meant to use that comment for Advantage and Disadvantage more so than simply Inspiration, so that's on me for confusing the issue, thanks for pointing that out.

  • @Psychodegu
    @Psychodegu 9 лет назад

    I might be wrong but I thought back when THAC0 was a thing you started with 10 ac and to get to -10 ac would be a 20 point spread, now 10 ac to 20 ac is only a 10 point spread. That doesn't seem exactly the same.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  9 лет назад

      +Psychodegu 5th Edition is the first version since AD&D to limit Armour Classes. In 3rd Edition you could obtain an AC of 30 by having a +5 Suit of Full Plate and having a +5 Shield, same went for 4th Edition. At the same time 5th Edition also reduced overall attack bonuses as well so overall it still works out well.

    I disagree with your thoughts on inspiration...it helps the players feel they have more say in the game and the rewards reaped from great roleplaying. I let the players vote on who they thought played a great game, and I then award accordingly. The DM does get the final say, but with heavy consideration of the players.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  9 лет назад +1

      kurganwins That's a fair way of handling it. I like the idea of Inspiration. My main concern would be people campaigning to have it awarded. In the past I played with a group that had some players who would try to abuse Inspiration, and would spend a long time arguing as to why they should have it.

      In order to try 5th Edition D&D out you can actually do it for free by downloading the Basic Rules from: dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
      There is also the Starter Set which has five premade characters and a decent adventure. The Starter Set goes well with the Basic Rules.
      If you are looking for something with more options and want to play as a Player Character I recommend the Player's Handbook. You might also want to consider Xanathar's Guide to Everything which comes out later this month.
      If you want to run games as a Dungeon Master then you should get the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual.
      I did do a buyer's guide for 5th Edition on my channel if you are interested. There are two parts to it, but I discuss all the products published by Wizards of the Coast

    Excellent review,
    I've been running 5th edition since the basic rules were released and can say that the system is excellent in use.
    I have never had an easier time GMing and quite a bit of the stress I'd get from looking up rules, setting up terrain and all the details is completely gone if not much easier to manage.
    One of the very cool aspects to the system is how healing is handled. The campaign I am running is a super-adventure akin to Castle Ravenloft where the players have to scrounge to survive in the setting.
    As the game continues and the players keep going from combat to combat they loose the ability to heal themselves. This is due to only regaining half of your hit dice every long rest and there have been several sessions back to back that had players at 4-10 HP with no hit dice.
    This is perfect for the kinds of games I run, which tend to be gritty dark fantasy.
    I am very interested to hear your experiences running the system in Juce's One Shot Group.
    Thanks for the great video and keep up the good workvDravenSwiftbow ! :)

    Thing for me is that, although from what I have read and heard here, 5th Edition is a good version, I just have too much money invested into Pathfinder to change systems (I didn't feel that way about the change from 2nd to 3rd since that was a HUGE rules update, but I never bought 3.5 for the same reason).
    If anyone I know ever runs a 5th edition campaign, however, I may just pick up the Player's Handbook.

      There is a free set of basic rules you could download, there is a Player's Basic Rules ans well as a Basic Rules set for Dungeon Masters. I'm not saying that you should drop Pathfinder by any means. If you and your group are enjoying it than that's great. But the free Basic Rules allow you to potentially run a campaign from 1st-20th Level without spending a dime. fixes needed ranger & druid's companions are so weak and low hp. Wizards so outclass Sorcerers but Sword Coast did add Storm origin which was very powerful. I prefer Pathfinder but 5 is a great start I think they striped away too many abilities yet I can see this as the future of the game easy rules & quick combat just needs more quality books and less background books, we need a few good best of 3 & 3.5 updated to 5e like Psionic handbook and Tome of Battle

    What I don't like it's that is very module dependent. They are structuring play to the level that you hardly see people playing home games. I played an expeditions game the other night and about four other people said they had played the module before. One of them more than once! Back in the day, this was unheard of with 2nd edition.

    I just picked up the Player's Handbook. I was really bothered by the quality of paper, it's only slightly better than what you'd find in a magazine. These pages won't stand up to years of use. $50 should have bought far better quality.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  6 лет назад

      I never really noticed an issue with the paper personally. To me poor quality paper stock is what was used for the 1995 2nd Edition AD&D reprints (with the Black Covers). That paper was horrendous. I will say that my main Players Handbook (I have three total) has stood up heavy use pretty much from the day I first received it and I haven't had any issues yet. That said I will have to look at the paper stock a little more carefully in the future.

    This is totally superficial, but I'm a little disappointed that couldn't come up with a unique graphic design solution for the look of the books! the inside is.... fine. it's functional, nothing we haven't seen before, very in line with everything up to this point. But the covers on the other hand, are so boring! I think a big reason 3rd edition was so popular was the mystique the book covers generated. they looked alien and arcane, something to really get excited about with each new core book was how cool the next book was going to look. I like the illustrations, don't get me wrong, but the type is very boring and "modern." I remember feeling this same way when, around 2004 or so they changed the typeface of Dragon Magazine to the generic sans-serif that magazine died with. The early 2000s font they used was so dope, and to me, what D&D represented.

    • @kevkas

      I haven't checked 5th edition, but 4th edition change in art style really threw me off, I disliked it A LOT, where is the medieval meets fantasy? It was just fantasy meets... Disney? And don't get me wrong, I love Disney, I've even worked there, but my idea of D&D was always how 3rd edition looked, I'm sad they moved away from that. As I said, I haven't checked 5th edition, I got enough of a dissapointment with 4th, their efforts to 'balance all classes' just made them feel the same, I LOVED the amount of freedom you had to create your specific idea of a character in 3rd edition, up to the very last detail, and I also liked the fact that you needed to be clever and learn how to properly level up your character in order to make it viable after 10-15 levels. I guess I'll keep playing 3rd, but I really identified with what you said about the art style of 3rd being lost, the fact that you said 5th art design looks 'functional' and 'modern' tells me they kept the same kind of style (meaning: not even close to 3rd ed style), what a shame. :(

    I like 5th addition but I don't think that I have been given a fair trail of it yet. Our DM sends level 1's and 2's into hell gates to fight 4 monsters all with more than 100 Health and able to kill us in 2-3 hits. 3.5 gave us nearly double health in the beginning as it was strength and constitution mixed and not a D10 or D8 with the constitution modifier. . . It just seem much harder to actually survive, but then again our Dm also has the 3.5 leveling system so we don't level very fast and thus are way behind in the battles.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  9 лет назад

      33jedi That must have been a house rule, or an optional rule I'm not aware of. By default 3rd Edition and 3.5 had similar starting HP, where fighters started first level with 10+Con Mod HP's and Wizards had 4+ Con Mod. 4th Edition had the most Hit Points at first level as it gave you a set amount plus your Constitution Score for HP. You may wish to speak with your DM as a group because it seems like he is an Adversarial DM in that he creates encounters that he knows the players can't deal with. I recently ran a one shot for some friends where they were 7th Level and defeated an Adult Red Dragon with a CR of 17. To be fair to them (and since it was an opening encounter I wanted them to win) I didn't use all of the dragons abilities, however it still was a challenging fight and they earned their victory.

    • @33jedi
      @33jedi 9 лет назад

      DravenSwiftbow I don't see a problem with that, I mean low health means nothing to me but if you know we only have 15 and less health don't have us fight enemies who do 20+ damage every hit. And the strength and constitution deal may have been house rule but it made the game slightly easier at the start and it progressively got much harder.

    You made my ears perk up a little at the mention of being comparable to AD&D. That was the golden era for me. Played 3.0 and I liked it ok. Better than 3.5 anyway imo. Always had a problem with this ideology of removing certain restrictions in the case of skills relative to class. I like exclusiveness. I like strong differentiation and diversity by class type. I think when you start removing restrictions for classes you start taking things away from the other players in your group that chose to play classes that offer unique and important roles to the group. when you start taking those things away, this I believe is what causes players to often stray from what is at the core of an RPG which is PLAYING A ROLE. They will often result to focusing on the most ridiculous things that have 0 bearing on the game and often detract from it just to feel unique again. "I think I will play my half-orc berserker as a retired pimp that likes to dress in nothing but the finest garb. He has turned to adventuring in lieu of leaving the pimping profession behind in the hopes of finding a deeper meaning in life than that of coin and "ho's"." Anyhoo, just my biased opinion of course but on another note, can I please get a "hell yea" on a return of THAC0 please?

    Question.
    A wizard walks into a room with 100 monsters standing next to each other in a 20 foot radius, with each monster having 3 hp each and the wizard casts Fireball at the monsters, how many monsters does the wizard kill in one turn?
    A Fighter walks into a room with 100 monsters standing next to each other in a 20 foot radius, with each monster having 3 hp each and the fighter attacks the monsters, how many monsters does the fighter kill in one turn?

    • @MannyBrum
      @MannyBrum 8 лет назад +6

      If I walk into a room with 100,000 ants in a 20 foot radius with a flamethrower, you can be sure they're all going to be dead in 6 seconds. A sword is not the best tool for the job in that scenario. That doesn't mean the wizard is overpowered. The wizard can't use his fireball every turn indefinitely. Eventually he'll be out of gas and complaining he needs to long rest while the fighter only needs a short rest. Also the fighter can use his sword multiple times depending on level and can do it every turn, turn after turn, until he is unconscious. A wizard has to worry that if he wastes his fireball on 3hp creatures he's not going to be able to cast one of his other 3rd level spells later in a more crucial encounter.

      K also me and a group of friends recently started playing fifth edition and still don't really understand armor class could you maybe tell me how it works

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  9 лет назад

      Sure. If you don't wear any Armour then your AC (Armour Class) is 10+ your Dexterity Modifier ex: a 14 Dex gives you a Modifier of +2 so without wearing any Armour your AC would be 12 (10 base and +2 Dexterity). A suit of Armour gives you the total AC for wearing that suit. So Leather Armour your base AC is 11 (instead of 10 for your base AC and +1 for the Armour) With light Armour you can add your full Dexterity Modifier to what ever the Armour gives you (so with a Dexterity of 18 you can add the full +4 bonus. Using the Leather Armour I mentioned above your AC would be 15, 11 for the Armour and +4 for your Dex). Medium Armour only allows you to add a Maximum of +2 for Dexterity regardless of what your full modifier is so if you were wearing Hide Armour (AC 12) and had a Dexterity of 18 your total AC would be 14 (12 for Hide Armour and +2 for Dexterity instead of the full +4) The difference in Dexterity modifiers represents the fact that the Armour is bulkier and restricts movement. Heavy Armour has much higher AC's but you can't add any of your Dexterity modifier to it. So if you have a Dexterity of 16 or higher your best bet is to wear Light Armour. If your Dexterity is 12-15 than Medium Armour is the best way to go and a Dexterity of 11 or lower you would want to wear Heavy Armour. You still add your full Dex Modifier to all Dexterity based Skills, Saving Throws and Ability Checks. The Maximum Dex modifier allowed in the Armour chart is for determining AC only. I hope this helps.
      P.S. I'm Canadian so we spell "Armor" with a "U" in it. As I read this over I realized I used that word a lot and if you're in the United States it is spelled differently.

      +Bob Bob Wow, thank you. Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I just reached a point where between work and family I just haven't had time (or more importantly Energy) to record. I'm actually hoping to record some videos over the next few days. I needed the time away since this channel was starting to feel like an obligation and not the hobby it started out as. It also didn't help that I typically record in my basement which was freezing cold during the winter.

    5e is not bad, but I'm really not happy with the healing and resting rules. Even the DMG doesn't have the options I was looking for. I think I'll go back to playing 2nd edition.

      On page 266 and 267 they had additional rules and variations for healing. I don't know if you didn't see them yet or if you still aren't pleased. You sound like one of those people that like the gritty realism rest variant.

    I still say 4e was better I liked that it relied so much on the map. As a dm I could create custom maps and make the players use the battleground to there advantage.
    The rules were perfectly determined so if any of the players said I was ripping them of I could just point to the book. 5e seems to random.
    4e it easier for a amateur to understand. A player brought his girlfriend to a game an she got the rules in 1 hour, when she played 5e it took us all afternoon and she still was saying this doesn't make sense.

      adviel I played 4e for 2years on one game. 5e is more suited for players that have been playing TT games for awhile. There is a lot of flexibility with the system that many GM's such as myself find great as not feeling so restricted by a hard coded structure. 5e allows us to adapt and modify the game to a structure we see fit, and still not losing the main outline of what the game was built around. Not being able to craft magic items is more realistic and has been completely abused in past editions. Players should feel awarded when they find a item of such value and properties. Not in a sense of: Oh, I'll just sell it and make bank bc I know my DM will give us more later on in the next dungeon. Thats so weak in my eyes. Destroys the RP and story. A magic item should push the game forward and have a meaningful purpose other then: Oh yeah +2 holy weapon. Again such rubbish. 4e was simply a hack & slash edition based around a video game outline. It simply dimwitted the players and the DM/GM. This is just my outlook. Hail 5e!

      The battle system was hack & slash but that just simplifies it so that I could go on with the story. We still had role playing and story, that was my job as DM, but I think its more interesting a character based story with events that affect people and relations, then having them mcguffin search just to further the story.
      If they have multiple magic artifacts I just had to make the encounters harder to balance it all out, it impacted the story in no way.

    CR was such BS assigning a monster a number even though they had abilities that could truly screw your personal party over was TERRIBLE! I always just skipped that and awarded XP as I saw fit for the encounters anyways.

      Modules are super easy to break in any game, the DM is there to balance out the player abilities with the events happening.

    Role Playing games DO NOT NEED perfect rules or frameworks. They DO NEED rules and framework STABILITY. For all the complexities and flaws of the Original AD&D or 2nd Edition AD&D, the franchise would have been better off if the past 20-30 years were spent releasing content, online adaptations or games based on the SAME rules and framework rather than trying five revisions of the game. It is very much like video game consoles. They are seldom state of the art electronics; they are seldom perfect. But, compared to PCs and other platforms, developers and games have ONE STANDARD of hardware for half a decade or more. If you revise the hardware every year, you are not going to have content worth a damn and nobody will want to buy your console only to throw it away in a few months.

    I personaly after playing AD&D/3E/4E and what knock im not a huge fan of 5E. It has issues/problems at high levels / Mid levels some of the 'best' Class's like say paladim i kinda go Meh, It feels like a nerfed version of even AD&D Paladins and such.
    trust me it was easy for me at level 10 in 3E To heal up to 80+ HP with lay on hands which is allmost double what you can do in 5E and such ...

      @DravenSwiftbow  7 лет назад

      I haven't personally experienced too many issues with 5th yet, but I've only had one group go into high levels. I also haven't been able to experience 5th as a player yet so I honestly can't speak on how the classes feel as they level. Hopefully Xanathar's Guide to Everything will feature some updates or alternate class features to fix those issues.

      Dont get me wrong I dont mind 5E But some of the hype/thinggs ppl have said about it makes me face palm then again i was the type of DM that was eather loved/hated very few inbetweens as what i learned in AD&D days stuck with me to future campaigns which was useoly more then 1-2 battles a day. Normaly if/when you had battles which made some ppl (Normaly spellcasters) Hate me as they spend 70% or more of there spells on the first battle or two which to me meant they learned D&D the wrong way, To me if your invading a lair, The lair/Orcs lets say are going to have patrols if they run across dead bodys in a previoius room they will go onto alert Mode, which is something DMS/Players dont relise, its not all about them to add flavor to a world you have to work the world ... then again my biggest flaws was story telling something the names of my mobs would be dumb simple names like jack/bash/Growl/Bob or random bs XD

    I love 4e. It's still my favourite by far. 5e for me is the first time D&D went backwards. I loved the 4e tactics. I hate the hard cap at 20 for ability stats, using feet instead of squares, the move away from miniatures, I dislike the advantage & Disadvantage mechanic as it is too extreme, I completely disagree with magic weapon sales, in reality they should be rare but selling them would be easy as heck as everyone would want one, I could go on and on but finally I wish they kept the Eladrin (Named Half Elf). I also find the books and information is not put together well at all. My old DM calls 5e D&D for Dummies. No offence but I hope it dies fast but I doubt it will. Most seem to like it which stuns me.

    Give me 2md ed/3.5/PF. I think 5th edition is total trash but then again I am an old guard gamer who refuses to move on with the designs. I played this in playtest and a little after and I feel personally it's too dumbed down and does not cater to my style of play. I honestly found it's limitations on not able to craft magic items ruined the game for me, as well as it's limitations on magic items. There is many areas I find I dislike about it and that Pathfinder is the best still of the later systems.
    Honestly this is just my opinion and yes I am a close minded old guard bigot on the industry. However having played the playtest and given it a shot I think it is nothing compared to the past editions. Still a step up from fourth, but I like my numerous splat books and power options. This to me does not feel like the game that I felt it could be. Plus they should have stripped ALL aspects of fourth edition which was complete and utter garbage.

    Personally I think 5th Edition is overrated. Although I agree it is better than 3.0 or 3.5 I still have issues with it. First and foremost, why must every class have an Archetype to play? A fighter should be a fighter with weapon proficiency and a few other abilities. Sorcerers should not be limited to only Dragon or Wild backgrounds but should be empowered by heredity or a life event such as a birthmark or a comet flying over head on their birthday. Warlocks, wouldn't that be an evil cleric? How can a creature such as Asmodeus or Titiania imbue powers upon someone when they themselves are limited in power? It's like all the classes have 2 or more paths they MUST follow. Isn't that what a subclass like Paladin or Ranger is supposed to be? Another path for the Fighter? I personally am a Castles and Crusades fan. If you REALLY want to go back to the feel of 1st or 2nd Edition with a d20 mechanic this is the way to go in my opinion. Troll Lord games is a small fish compared to the whale of a cash cow WOTC has become.
